Or, rather, there are many such debates, but an important one is the question of how to measure income inequality. On one side, some researchers have argued that pre-tax incomes are an important starting point, because they can be used as a measure of the share of generated income is being directly distributed to workers vs owners. On the other, researchers tend to focus more on post-tax income measurements, with the argument being that it is important to capture the benefits accruing to workers through social programs before making judgements about inequality.
