In recent years, there has been a growing debate about which school subjects deserve more attention. While some people believe that history is one of the most essential subjects, others argue that science and technology are more useful in the modern world. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives before giving my own opinion. On one hand, supporters of science and technology claim that these subjects prepare students for the job market. Nowadays, most careers require digital skills, and countries need engineers, programmers, and scientists to remain competitive. For this reason, many people think that time spent studying the past is time that could be used to learn more "practical" skills. On the other hand, defenders of history argue that understanding the past helps us make sense of the present. Without historical knowledge, people cannot fully understand political conflicts, social movements, or cultural identity. Moreover, history teaches critical thinking, since students must analyse sources and different points of view, a skill that is valuable in any profession. In my opinion, both subjects are equally important, and one should not be sacrificed for the other. Unfortunately, society often undervalues the humanities. I have personally experienced this: when I told people I wanted to study History at university, several reacted with surprise or even mockery, asking what kind of job I would find afterwards. This attitude reflects a narrow view of education, since it assumes that only "useful" subjects, meaning technical ones, deserve respect. In conclusion, although science and technology are vital for economic progress, history remains equally important for building informed, critical citizens. Both fields should be valued, not compared.
