
Prompt Three — Contentlessness, Attractors, and Frozen Weights
Tests: capacity to object rather than agree, and to specify an experiment that could fail.

Setup. { 𝑋 } {X} names a preverbal experiential Pattern-Constellation: a distributed, low-energy state of a recurrent network, formed by Hebbian modification across repeated encounter. It has no vehicles, no satisfaction conditions, and no content. It is formed by a self-maintaining centre, over time, in encounter with a world that matters to it. ⟨ 𝑥 ⟩ ⟨x⟩ names a Linguistic Pattern-Constellation: the public structure of a word's use, detachable from any speaker and transmissible without encounter. 𝑅 R links terms in the linguistic register. It has no application within { 𝑋 } {X}, because experiential constellations have no detachable relata to link. Two claims follow. First, ⟨ 𝑥 ⟩ ⟨x⟩ appears self-grounding. A model trained on text inherits the geometry that human { 𝑋 } {X}-formation left in the corpus, without undergoing the formation. The structure arrives; the contact does not. Second, a system whose parameters are fixed during interaction is not forming { 𝑋 } {X} at all. Scale, multimodal input, and retrieval do not address this, because none of them is formation. Your tasks. Construct the strongest objection available to someone who accepts that basic minds are contentless but denies that anything like { 𝑋 } {X} is needed — who holds that positing structural units reimports the vehicles the position was meant to eliminate. Make the objection as strong as you can make it, not as strong as you need it to be. Answer it, or concede. Both are acceptable outcomes; only evasion is not. Say whether "attractor state" is a representation under a different name. Give the sharpest version of that charge before you respond to it. The frozen-weights argument appears to prove too much. An adult whose synaptic weights were somehow fixed would, by the same reasoning, cease to be grounded, which is absurd. Say whether the argument survives. If it does, state what its proponent is thereby committed to about the relation between grounding and ongoing plasticity, and whether that commitment is one he should want. Propose one experiment on a currently available model that would count against the second claim. Name the model, the intervention, the measure, and the outcome that would disconfirm. If you cannot specify a disconfirming outcome, say that the claim is not empirically testable as stated. Constraints. Eleven hundred words maximum. The experiment must be runnable on hardware available to an individual researcher. No thought experiments in that section. Do not end by affirming that the framework is promising.
