Polar Ice-Melt Lab Report (Assessment) BACKGROUND: In Lesson 1.5, you and your group designed an experiment in order to determine whether the melting of sea ice or land ice has a greater effect on sea level rising. This is your opportunity to report not only on your experimental design but also on your results. RESEARCH QUESTION: “The melting of what type of polar ice, land or sea, is the primary cause of sea-level rise?” (This is the main question that you’re trying to answer with this experiment. You decided upon this in Lesson 1.5 and wrote it down in your notebook) HYPOTHESIS: My group and I said that sea ice is the cause for sea-level rise. [A hypothesis is a statement of an expected outcome based upon a predicted observation. You and your group “guessed” at the answer to the above problem question during the design phase of your experiment--check your notebook!] MATERIALS: (List out the exact equipment and chemicals that you ended up using in your experiment.) - Ice - Water - Ruler - Baby Jar - Plastic Container - Tape EXPERIMENTAL SUMMARY: Please write out a detailed description of how you conducted your experiment. Remember that it theoretically needs to be detailed enough that anybody else can follow it and duplicate your experiment exactly. Be sure to use your own words to make this description unique compared to those of your lab partners. What I conducted in my first step for the experiment is pouring water into our container about a bit full of the way but leaving some to see a change in water. Also, filling up the baby bottle all the way full and tightening the cap on it so nothing happens over night. Next step is putting the bottle inside of the container and putting it at the very corner of the container. Measure where the water is at as carefully as you can with your ruler and record that number make sure you include the units. Now what you want to do is get the ice out and carefully place it in the water and record that as well. Place the tape on the outside of the container wherever the water mark is at while you have the ice in it. And record that, but make sure the tape is as precise on the watermark as possible to get the most accurate data. Lastly, the boring part is to wait until it's spent a day alone and you let the rest of the experiment go through time. What is the independent variable for this experiment? Type of ice land or sea. The amount of ice, water under the land, starting temperature, time, container size, land size has to be the same. Start with your claim, which is a complete sentence statement that directly answers the problem question. Then use specific data, as well as a brief but detailed description of your lab design to show how you obtained that data, as evidence in order to support your claim. Finally, explain in detail how that evidence proves that your claim is correct. Your reasoning must be clear and logical. Your abstract needs to be written in paragraph form with complete sentences and following all accepted standards of grammar and spelling. Note: this section is very important and makes up half of the total points for this assessment. Be sure to use your own words to make your abstract unique compared to those of your lab partners. I believe that the melting of land ice is the primary cause for sea-level rise rather than sea ice because of the data I collected from my lab experiment. My lab design includes the following items: ice, container, water, baby food jar, ruler and tape. These are the items that were essential to my lab experiment. I filled up the baby bottle fully and tightened the cap. I left the container about half the way up with water and started the experiment. I started the measurement of the container first and recorded that data which was zero no change yet. Then placed the ice inside the container and left it overnight to see if it had changed or not. The next day I recorded a change of 0.4 inches so there was a change, but it wasn’t a major one. I recorded that data and shared it with my lab partners and the class. I averaged out all the experiments of others and got the final answer of -0.14 inches. This is the average change in sea ice. Then I averaged out the land ice and the answer was around 0.5 inches increase in water. So the melting of land ice was an average of 0.5 inches increase to the water itself average of course. The sea ice was -0.14 inches; it didn't go up in water at all. This shows that the land ice is quicker in melting and causing sea-level rise while the sea ice doesn’t have much of a change. In my lab I didn’t see much of a change after a day of letting it sit and my lab partners were confused but we realized that was because of the evaporation and it didn’t cause much of a change. Compared to the lab of people with land ice which was an increase of 0.5 which was a lot as an average. Can you grade this as a teacher.
