Snake — a game of appetite

The user wants a Snake game. They said "Guys, write code for the game snake". The system prompt says the response will be rendered in an iframe, so I should provide a complete, self-contained HTML file with everything inline. Let me make this a really good Snake game — not a boring default. I want it to feel authored, memorable, with a distinctive visual identity. Let me think about what would make this stand out: **Design direction ideas:** 1. A retro CRT terminal aesthetic — green phosphor on black, scanlines, screen curvature. This is classic but could be done really well with craft. 2. A minimal Swiss/editorial style — stark black and white with one accent color, big typography. 3. A "snake as calligraphy" — the snake drawn as a smooth continuous stroke rather than blocks, like ink flowing. 4. An LCD / Nokia 3310 homage — that greenish LCD with ghosting pixels. I think option 1 or a hybrid could be striking. Actually, let me think about what would create a "signature moment". Idea: The snake rendered as a smooth, continuous rounded path (not blocky squares) that flows through the grid — interpolated movement so it glides fluidly between cells rather than jumping. That alone makes it feel alive. Combined with a CRT phosphor aesthetic or a refined dark aesthetic with one accent color. Let me design: **Visual language:** - Dark background but not pure black — maybe deep warm charcoal or a deep green-black (#0a0f0a range for phosphor vibe). - Accent: phosphor green (#7CFF9B or similar) — a single accent, no gradients as decoration. - Typography: a monospace with character — "Space Grotesk" for headings? Or something like "IBM Plex Mono" / "JetBrains Mono". For a game, a mono font fits. I could use "Departure Mono" — no, not on Google Fonts. Let me use "Space Grotesk" for display + "IBM Plex Mono" for the game data. Or "Bricolage Grotesque" for display. Actually for a CRT/phosphor vibe, a pixel-ish font like "VT323" or "Press Start 2P" would be on-theme. "Press Start 2P" is quite overused for retro games though. "VT323" is nice and readable at large sizes. Let me pair VT323 (display/score) with maybe just VT323 throughout — it has a strong identity. Hmm, but VT323 for body text can be thin. It's a game, so limited text. VT323 everywhere could work and be cohesive. Actually, let me reconsider the aesthetic. CRT green-on-black snake is a bit expected. What about an "amber phosphor" terminal? Amber (#FFB000-ish) is more distinctive than green. Or... let me think differently. **Alternative: "Paper arcade"** — light cream background, ink-black snake, red apple accent, editorial typography, the game board like a printed puzzle page with fine grid lines. That's unexpected and could be gorgeous. Snake on graph paper — like a school notebook doodle come alive. Hand-drawn feel? The snake as a bold ink stroke. Hmm. Signature moment options: - Smooth interpolated snake with a tapered tail drawn as a continuous stroke - Eating food causes a ripple/pulse - CRT flicker/scanline - Death animation: the snake dissolves I think I'll go with a refined dark "phosphor" design but elevated: - Deep background #0B0E0C - Snake: bright phosphor green with a soft glow (glow via canvas shadowBlur is functional here, part of the phosphor concept — not decorative gradient banners; a subtle glow on the game elements is thematically earned. But I should be careful — "no gradient glows... bolted on just to look designed". A phosphor CRT aesthetic genuinely calls for subtle bloom; it's the core concept, not bolted-on. I'll keep it restrained.) - Food: a pulsing dot, maybe amber to contrast? Or keep monochrome green with the food slightly different. Amber food on green snake could be nice — two hues from old terminals. Actually wait — let me reconsider once more. The "notebook/graph paper" idea is more original and memorable. Cream paper (#F5F1E6), fine blue-gray grid like engineering paper, snake in near-black ink (#1A1A1A), food as a red circle like a hand-drawn apple, score in a stamped style. Typography: a serif or grotesque display. The snake rendered as a smooth continuous variable-width stroke would look like an ink line. Death: the ink line gets "crossed out". That's charming. But gameplay-wise, dark phosphor with glow is more "game-like" and satisfying. Let me combine: I'll go with the ink-on-paper editorial direction — it's more distinctive and shows craft. Snake as a living ink stroke on graph paper. Title in big condensed type. Hmm, but one concern: on light backgrounds, subtle animations read less dramatically. Also glow effects don't work. The smooth snake stroke still works beautifully on paper though. Let me commit: **"INK SNAKE" — snake as calligraphy on graph paper.** Design details: - Background: warm paper (#F4EFE4 or #F2EDE3) - Grid: faint lines (like engineering graph paper) in a blue-gray, very subtle, maybe with a heavier line every 5 cells - Board: centered, with a fine border, maybe a header above like a printed sheet: title "SNAKE" in big type, score as "SCORE 000" like a ledger, best score - Snake: near-black (#161412) smooth stroke with rounded caps, head slightly wider with two small eyes? Eyes could be cute — two tiny paper-colored dots on the head. Actually eyes add charm — let me add subtle eyes that face the direction of travel. - Food: a red (#D9412B or vermillion #E04B2F) filled circle with a slight wobble/pulse, like a berry. Maybe drawn with a tiny irregular hand-drawn feel? Keep it a clean circle with a small stem? Keep it simple: vermillion disc with slight radius pulse. - Eating: a quick ripple ring expanding from the food position, score ticker animates - Death: snake stroke "shakes" then fades to gray, "GAME OVER" stamp appears — maybe a red stamp-like rotated label, like a rubber stamp on paper. That's a nice signature moment: a rotated stamped "GAME OVER" with border, slightly rough. - Start state: "PRESS ANY ARROW / SPACE TO START" prompt in the middle - Speed increases slightly as you eat - Wrap-around or walls? Classic snake: walls kill. I'll do walls (board boundary kills) — classic. Maybe show the boundary as the sheet edge with a drawn frame. **Layout:** - Full viewport, paper background covers everything - Centered composition: title block top ("SNAKE." huge, with a small sub-line like "A game of appetite" or just rules), game board in the middle, footer strip with controls legend (← ↑ → ↓ / arrows, space to pause) - Avoid dashboard feel — make it like a printed poster/sheet: asymmetric title, big number for score. **Typography:** - Display: something with character — "Archivo Black"? "Bricolage Grotesque"? For an ink/editorial vibe, a strong condensed grotesque: "Anton" or "Archivo Black". Or a serif like "Fraunces" (has that ink-y, warm editorial feel with optical sizes). Fraunces is beautiful and less overused. Let me use **Fraunces** for the big title (with soft/wonk axes maybe) and a mono like "Space Mono" or "IBM Plex Mono" for score/labels. Space Mono has quirky character that fits. Plan: Fraunces 900 for "SNAKE" title + Space Mono for HUD/labels. Good pairing, distinctive. **Canvas rendering approach:** - Grid: e.g., 24 cols × 24 rows? Board sized responsively. Cell size computed. Let me do 21×21 (odd, centered) — classic. Or 24×16 landscape? For a phone/desktop iframe, square-ish works. I'll do 22 cols × 22 rows? Let me pick 21×21. - Snake movement: tick-based logic (e.g., starts at 7.5 ticks/sec, ramps up), but rendering interpolated: each render frame, position = lerp between previous positions using progress = (now - lastTick)/tickInterval. Draw snake as polyline through interpolated segment centers, with stroke width tapering from head to tail, round joins/caps. Head gets a slightly larger rounded head with eyes. Interpolation details: Keep snake as array of cells (head first). On tick: compute new head, push front, pop tail (unless growing). For interpolation, keep prevCells (positions before tick) and cells (after tick). Each drawn segment i position = lerp(prevCells[i], cells[i], t). Need to handle length changes (growing: prevCells shorter — for the tail, just hold at prev tail). Handle wrap? No wrap (walls), so no cross-edge interpolation issues. Good — walls simplify interpolation. Actually careful: when snake moves, cells[i] corresponds to prevCells[i-1]... Let me think. Standard approach: after tick, newCells = [newHead, ...oldCells minus tail (or not, if grow)]. For rendering interpolation, each segment i in newCells should move FROM its previous position TO current. Previous position of segment i (the piece of the body) — the body doesn't move per se; the whole snake shifts. Simplest robust approach: store for each segment its "from" and "to": from[i] = oldCells[i] (same index), to[i] = newCells[i]. Since newCells[i] = oldCells[i-1] for i≥1, segment i lerps from oldCells[i] to oldCells[i-1] — each body point slides one cell forward along the path. Head lerps from oldCells[0] to newHead. Tail: if not growing, newCells has length n (same), from = oldCells, works: last segment lerps from old tail to oldCells[n-2], i.e., tail retracts. If growing, newCells length n+1, oldCells length n: for i < n, from=oldCells[i]; for the extra last one (i=n), from = oldCells[n-1] (hold at old tail). Edge: on eat, the new head is added and tail stays, so newCells = [newHead, ...oldCells], length n+1. from[i] for i in [0..n]: from = oldCells[i] for i snake length, remove. - Death: on collision, freeze, snake turns gray/ink-light, screen does a tiny shake (transform on board container), then the GAME OVER stamp slams in (scale from 1.6→1 with rotation, like a stamp). Score shown. "Press space to restart". - Score: big number in Space Mono, with a tick-up animation? Score increments instantly is fine; add a small pop animation on the score when it changes. - Best score persisted in localStorage. **Sound?** Could add tiny WebAudio blips (eat = short pluck, death = low thud). No external assets needed — synthesized. Add a mute toggle. That elevates it. Keep volumes gentle. I'll implement: audio context created on first user gesture. Eat: quick sine blip pitch rising with combo? Death: descending. Also a subtle tick? No, too much. Just eat + death + maybe a soft start sound. Icons: I need a mute/unmute icon — I'll inline small SVG icons (speaker with/without waves) rather than emoji. Or use an icon library — system prompt says use an icon library for small icons. Inline SVG is fine and self-contained; but to be safe, I could just hand-inline two SVG paths (that IS using proper icons, not emoji). I think inline SVG is acceptable and self-contained. Alternatively use Lucide via CDN. Inline SVG keeps it robust offline. I'll inline minimal speaker SVGs. **Controls:** - Arrow keys + WASD - Space: start/pause/restart - Touch: swipe detection for mobile! Good to include — swipe on canvas changes direction. Also tap to start. - On-screen? Swipe is enough; mention in footer. **Pause:** pressing P or Space while playing pauses; show "PAUSED" overlay (paper-styled: the board dims with a translucent paper wash and a stamped "PAUSED"). **Responsive:** compute canvas size from available space: min( (vw - padding), (vh - header/footer) ). Use devicePixelRatio scaling for crispness. Let me also add a subtle paper texture? Procedural noise via tiny canvas pattern or SVG feTurbulence overlay at low opacity — adds warmth. A data-URI SVG turbulence as background overlay with low opacity, multiply. Cheap and effective. I'll add a full-page overlay with feTurbulence noise at ~4-6% opacity. Careful with performance — static overlay div, fine. **Header design:** Top area: left — "SNAKE" big in Fraunces italic? Maybe "Snake" in huge Fraunces with a period: "Snake." and beneath in Space Mono small caps: "NO. 001 — A GAME OF APPETITE" or instructions. Right side — score ledger: "SCORE" label small, big number; "BEST" smaller. Maybe arrange as: title left, scores right, baseline-aligned. Footer: controls legend "↑↓←→ MOVE · SPACE PAUSE · SWIPE ON TOUCH" in Space Mono small, plus mute button. Hmm wait — "No mechanical column splits" — a header with title left / score right is fine, it's an asymmetric editorial layout, not a card grid. Let me also give the board a hand-crafted frame: 2px ink border with slightly rounded corners, plus a caption under the board like a figure caption: "FIG. 1 — THE GARDEN, 21 × 21 CELLS" in tiny mono. Cute editorial touch. Start overlay: before first move, show inside the board: "PRESS AN ARROW TO BEGIN" with a subtle blinking underscore, plus maybe a small drawn arrow. The snake starts as a short 3-segment line in the middle, food placed ahead. Actually nice touch: idle snake gently "breathes" (width oscillates slightly) before start. **Colors:** - Paper: #F3EEE3 (warm) - Ink: #17150F / #1B1913 - Grid line: rgba(27, 25, 19, 0.07), heavier every 7? Standard graph paper is every 5. With 21 cells, every 5 gives lines at 5,10,15,20 — fine. Slightly stronger + maybe tiny red margin line? Engineering paper sometimes has a red margin. Could add a vertical red rule a couple cells from the left edge of the board — decorative but thematically earned (graph paper). Hmm, could interfere with gameplay readability. Maybe skip, or make it very subtle. Skip — keep the board clean; the red only appears as food and stamp. - Vermillion red: #D6482B or #E14B2E - Muted ink for secondary text: rgba(27,25,19,0.55) **Death animation detail:** on death, I'll set state='dead', record time; render: snake drawn in gray with a slight "deflate" (width shrink) and the head tilts? Keep simpler: freeze positions, stroke color fades to a gray ink over 400ms, board shakes 300ms, after 500ms stamp appears with scale/rotate animation (CSS on an overlay div — easier than canvas). Overlay div centered over board: rotated -6deg, border 3px solid red, text "GAME OVER" in Space Mono bold letterspaced, plus score line "SCORE 12 — BEST 30". Stamp animation: keyframes scale(2.2)→scale(1) with opacity, cubic-bezier ease-in, like a stamp press, maybe with a slight blur→sharp. New best: stamp says "NEW BEST" instead? Or a small line "NEW BEST!" in red. Nice: if score > previous best, show "★ NEW BEST" — no emoji/star glyph? A star glyph "✦"? That's a decorative unicode, borderline emoji-ish. I'll just write "NEW BEST" text, maybe with asterisk "*" which is typographic, fine. **Speed curve:** base interval 140ms, each food −3ms, min 70ms. Or stepwise: interval = max(70, 140 - score*3.5). Also small speed-up preview? Keep it. **Grid & sizes:** CELL count 21×21. Canvas logical size = 21*cell. Choose cell from available: board container measured; cell = floor(min(w,h)/21); canvas size = cell*21. DPR handling: canvas.width = size*dpr, ctx.scale(dpr,dpr) — but I'll compute positions in CSS pixels and scale context. Also draw grid on canvas each frame (cheap: 42 lines) or as CSS background on the canvas element? CSS background with linear-gradient repeating lines is easy but "no decorative gradients" — repeating-linear-gradient for grid lines is a technique, not decoration; still, I'd rather draw grid in canvas to also draw the heavier every-5 lines crisply and control alignment with cells. Canvas it is. Redraw everything each frame via rAF (fine at this size). Also draw subtle "board corner registration marks"? Could add crop marks outside the board corners (print aesthetic!) — small ink crop marks at the four corners of the sheet area via absolutely positioned pseudo-elements. Nice print-craft detail. I'll add crop marks around the board wrapper using ::before/::after or 4 small divs with borders. Actually simplest: 4 corner divs each with two 1px lines offset outside the board. I'll add them — subtle, thematically coherent (printed sheet). **Score display:** big mono number, e.g., 3 digits "012". With label "SCORE" above tiny. Best below. Score pop: CSS class toggle with transform scale animation. Also "LENGTH" stat? Keep minimal: SCORE and BEST only. Maybe also "SPEED" showing current level? Could show "LVL" that increments every 5 foods. Hmm, keep SCORE + BEST. Minimal is better. **Food placement:** random empty cell. If board nearly full (win condition?), snake length max = 441 — practically unreachable; still handle no-empty-cell → "you win" treat as game over with "PERFECTION" stamp? Fun easter egg, 3 lines of code. **Now code structure:** ```html Snake — a game of appetite

4 corners

...

FIG. 1 — THE GARDEN · 21 × 21 CELLS · DO NOT TOUCH THE WALLS

``` Wait — overlays: start overlay shows "PRESS ANY ARROW TO BEGIN" blinking. Should be positioned over the canvas. Pause overlay similar. Stamp for game over. Let me think about the layout more precisely: - body: paper bg, min-height 100vh (use 100dvh), display flex center, overflow hidden. - .sheet: width min(92vmin?) — I want the whole composition to fit viewport height: masthead (~90px) + board (square, S) + caption (~20px) + footer (~40px). So S ≈ min(vw*0.92, vh - 210). Set board size via JS measuring. Simpler: JS computes cell size from available area and sets canvas style width/height; header/footer just flow. If it overflows on tiny screens, allow scroll? Use flex with justify center and let JS cap size accounting for header/footer heights by measuring after layout: available = wrap parent's clientHeight? I'll compute: const avail = Math.min(wrapParentWidth, window.innerHeight - measuredChrome) where chrome = header height + caption + footer + paddings. Easier: use ResizeObserver on a flex-grow container that wraps the board; size = min(containerW, containerH). Let me structure: .sheet: height 100dvh, display flex column, padding 24px 32px, gap small. .masthead: fixed content. .stage: flex:1, min-height:0, display grid place-items center. .board-wrap: width: var(--board), height: var(--board) set via JS (style.setProperty). Canvas fills it. caption + footer fixed. JS: function resize(): compute size = Math.floor(Math.min(stage.clientWidth, stage.clientHeight)); leave margin. cell = size/21 (float ok — canvas drawing with floats fine; keep canvas CSS size = size px, backing = size*dpr). Actually let cell be float and canvas logical size = 21*cell exactly = size. **Drawing the snake — spine vertices:** Interpolated points: for i in 0..cells.length-1: p_i = lerp(from[i], cells[i], t) * cell + cell/2 (center). Head is p_0. But note the segments may not be adjacent during interpolation? They are: each moves one cell along the path, so the polyline remains connected (points spaced 1 cell apart, all lerping uniformly → spacing preserved). At corners, the polyline naturally rounds via lineJoin round. Good. Stroke width profile: total length L = cells.length (in cells). s_i = i (index). widthAt(i) between? For segment between vertex i and i+1, use s = i + 0.5. width(s): base taper: w = lerp(headW, tailW, s / L) with maybe slight easing; plus bulges. Hmm, but the head should be a bit rounder/bigger: draw a circle at head with radius headW/2 * 1.15, then eyes: two dots perpendicular to direction at head, offset forward slightly. Eye direction = current direction (interpolated direction from from→to of head... use vector from p_1 to p_0, i.e., direction of travel = normalize(p0 - p1)). Eyes: positions = head + dir*headR*0.35 ± perp*headR*0.42, radius headR*0.16, paper-colored fill. Cute but minimal. Maybe tiny pupils? Just paper dots is enough (like ink illustration negative space). Also draw a small tongue when near food?? Overkill; skip. Actually a tiny red tongue flick occasionally when within ~3 cells of food would be a delightful detail... it's a fork line. Maybe skip to avoid clutter. Hmm, it's cheap: if dist(head, food) <= 3.5 and flick cycle (every 900ms, visible 150ms), draw a small red line forward with fork. I'll include it — small delight, thematically perfect. Actually careful: tongue pointing at food = anticipation. Yes, include, subtle. **Bulges:** array of {pos} in cells from head. On eat: push {pos: 0}. Each frame: pos advances at speed = (1/tickInterval) per ms → pos += dt/tickMs. When pos > L+1: remove. Width bump: bumpW * exp(-0.5*((s-pos)/0.55)^2). Draw head circle radius also + nearest bulge contribution (s=0): include s=0 in width calc for head radius: r = widthAt(0)/2 (+small factor). **Rendering order:** clear paper? Canvas background transparent; board background = paper (same as page, maybe 2% lighter/whiter to distinguish "the sheet within the sheet"? Actually make board slightly lighter: #F7F3EA vs page #EFE9DC — creates subtle layering). Draw: 1. board bg fill (#F8F4EA) 2. grid lines light + every-5 heavier 3. border inside? The wrap has CSS border (2px ink). Also maybe inner hairline offset 4px? Keep CSS border only. 4. food: red circle radius pulse (r = 0.32*cell * (1 + 0.08 sin(t*4))), plus a tiny ink "leaf/stem"? Just the red disc + a 1px ink ring offset? Keep: red disc with subtle darker red rim (stroke). Maybe a small white paper highlight dot? A tiny crescent highlight makes it look like a berry — draw small paper-colored arc/dot at upper-left, radius r*0.18. Nice. 5. eat ripples: expanding rings, stroke red fading. 6. snake (spine strokes segment by segment, then head circle, then eyes, tongue). 7. dead: gray. **Eat check:** new head == food → grow, score++, spawn food, ripple, bulge, sound, score pop, speed up. **Collision:** new head out of bounds → dead. new head == any body cell (excluding the tail cell that will move away, unless growing) → dead. Standard: if not growing, tail vacates, so colliding with the last tail cell is allowed. I'll check against cells minus last element when not growing. **Game loop:** rAF-driven; accumulate time; while (acc >= tickMs) do tick, acc -= tickMs; t = acc/tickMs for interpolation. Cap acc to avoid spiral (e.g., if hidden tab). Use performance.now with last frame dt. **States:** 'ready' (idle, before first input), 'running', 'paused', 'dead', 'win'. In 'ready': snake drawn idle (breathing width, tongue flicks), food placed. First arrow key (or swipe) sets initial direction and starts. Space in ready → start moving in current facing dir? Let's require arrow/swipe; space also starts (default direction = facing, which is right/left depending on initial snake orientation). I'll orient the initial snake pointing left? Classic: middle row, 3 cells, moving right (head rightmost). So first press right/any non-reverse starts. If first press is left (reverse), ignore (or start moving right anyway? just ignore reversal; pressing left at start does nothing since it'd reverse into body). Acceptable: pressing ← at ready does nothing; prompt says "PRESS AN ARROW". Hmm — better: at ready, snake is just a head+2 body arranged so that any direction except toward its body works. If snake laid horizontally pointing right, pressing ← is blocked. To make ANY arrow start, I could start with snake as a single head (length 1)? Classic snake starts with a few segments. Length 2 horizontal: pressing left would reverse into the body cell. I could handle start specially: on first input, rotate snake to face that direction regardless (rebuild body behind the head). That's friendly! Implement: initial body = [head at center, tail behind]. On start with dir d: rebuild cells = [head, head - d]. Clean. So any arrow starts properly. I'll do that: at ready, if pressed dir != null: set cells = [head, headMinusDir] (length back to 2? but initial length maybe 3). Let me start with length 3: cells = [head, head - d, head - 2d]. If that goes out of bounds (head near wall)? Head at center of 21×21 → fine. Wait, but visually at 'ready' the snake shows as horizontal 3 segments pointing right. When starting with a different direction, it re-lays — a tiny visual jump. Acceptable? It might look odd. Alternative: keep length 3 at ready horizontal; on start with up: from = current horizontal positions, to = rebuilt vertical — the interpolation actually ANIMATES the snake rotating into the new direction. That could look charming (the snake reorienting). Since interpolation lerps all vertices simultaneously, the snake will smoothly swing to vertical. I think it'll look fine/interesting. OK. Simpler alternative: draw ready snake as just the head + short body pointing RIGHT, and require right/up/down arrows... no, the rebuild approach is more delightful. Keep it. **Swipe input:** touchstart/touchend on stage; dx/dy threshold 24px; dominant axis → dir. Also prevent default scrolling: touch-action: none on board. **Keyboard:** keydown: arrows/WASD → queue dir; Space → start/pause/restart (or resume); M → mute; prevent default for arrows/space (page scroll). Direction queue: queue max 3; on tick, shift until a valid dir found (not reverse of current). Valid relative to dir at time of application. **Pause:** Space or P toggles when running; show pause overlay. Also auto-pause on visibilitychange (nice touch). **Restart:** when dead, Space or any arrow after 600ms delay (avoid instant accidental restart) → reset to ready? Or directly start running with the pressed direction? Let's: after death, "PRESS SPACE" to restart → goes to ready state (fresh board). Or pressing an arrow restarts AND starts in that direction — snappy. I'll do both, with 500ms input lockout after death. **Sound (WebAudio):** - ensureAudio() on first gesture. - eat: osc triangle, freq 520 + score*6 (rising pitch as you eat — nice), short envelope 0.12s, plus a tiny higher blip? Keep one osc with pitch slide up (freq → *1.5 over 80ms). - death: two oscs low: 160→60 slide, 0.4s, sawtooth lowpass? Simple: triangle 180→55, gain decay 0.5s + a noise thump? Keep simple slide. - start: soft short blip 330Hz. - pause: 220 blip down. - Master gain 0.15. Mute toggle stored in localStorage. **Score pop:** on score change: element classList add 'pop', remove on animationend. **Best:** localStorage 'ink-snake-best'. Display 3-digit padded. **Stamp (game over):** div with border, rotated, red; content "GAME OVER" big, below smaller "SCORE 012 · BEST 030" and if new best an extra line "NEW BEST — WELL FED". Animate via CSS class 'show': keyframes stamp-in { from { transform: rotate(-6deg) scale(2.4); opacity:0 } 60% { ... } } with a slight overshoot. Also add a "paper wash" behind? A subtle backdrop dim: rgba paper 0.55 over board so stamp reads. Use overlay div with background rgba(243,238,227,0.6) + backdrop-filter maybe not needed. Actually for pause overlay: similar wash + "PAUSED" text in mono, blinking. Reuse .veil styles. Start overlay: transparent wash (no dim? light dim 0.35) + text "PRESS ANY ARROW" + blinking. And maybe a small keyboard arrow glyphs drawn as SVG? Text arrows "←↑→↓" are typographic glyphs, fine (not emoji). In Space Mono, "← ↑ → ↓" might not exist in the font → fallback glyph from system mono; fine visually? Could use SVG arrows to be safe. I'll use text arrows in a kbd-styled span — most systems render arrows fine. Alternatively write "ARROW KEYS". I'll use both: legend "←↑→↓ / WASD — MOVE SPACE — PAUSE". Rendered in mono; if glyph missing, fallback still looks okay. **Crop marks:** .cropmark spans positioned at corners of board-wrap, offset outside by 8px: each is 12x12 with border-left/top etc. Only two lines per corner like registration marks (an L offset from corner). Print style: actually registration crop marks are two lines NOT touching the corner, extending outward aligned with edges. Implement: each corner div 14×14 placed at (-18px) offsets; lines: e.g., top-left mark: horizontal line at bottom edge going left? Simpler approach: use ::before/::after on board-wrap: before = horizontal line at top-left extending left of board, after = vertical... this gets fiddly with 8 marks. I'll create 4 divs .cm.tl/.tr/.bl/.br, each 12px × 12px, positioned outside corners with two borders forming an L that doesn't touch: e.g., .cm.tl { top:-16px; left:-16px; border-right? } Hmm. Crop marks visually: for top-left corner, you'd have a horizontal line segment to the left of the corner (aligned with top edge) and a vertical line segment above the corner (aligned with left edge). So div 1: width 10px height 1.5px, top: -1.5? aligned with top edge (top:0 minus?) Let me place: line A: position absolute, top: 0 (translateY(-50%)? no—aligned with the top border line, extending leftwards from x=-8 to x=-18). I'll just do: for each corner, one div containing two absolutely positioned spans. Simpler: use box-shadow tricks? Overcomplicating. Easiest robust: 8 tiny divs generated in HTML? Or use CSS: .board-wrap::before and ::after can only give 2. I'll add a single SVG overlay? Actually simplest: I'll draw crop marks on the CANVAS itself — outside the play area? The canvas is exactly the board; marks would be outside → cut off. Could make canvas slightly larger than play area with padding for marks and frame. Hmm. Alternative: put crop marks on the .stage wrapper corners (marks at page composition corners)? Or put them around the caption? Let me just add 4 corner divs to board-wrap, each 12×12, positioned at corner offsets (-14px), with 1.5px ink borders on the two outer sides forming an L pointing away — that reads as crop/registration marks even if not exactly print-accurate. E.g., .cm.tl { top:-14px; left:-14px; border-top:1.5px solid ink; border-left:1.5px solid ink; } → an L opening toward the board corner... that draws lines ABOVE-left forming corner bracket outside. That's a "framing bracket" look — also nice (like photo corner marks). Actually inverted brackets look great: corner brackets outside each corner. But that might read as camera-viewfinder. Either is fine aesthetically. I'll do offset bracket marks (top-left has border-left+border-top), slightly rotated? No rotation. Good. Hmm wait, actually true crop marks: lines that align with the edges but stop short of the corner. With one div per corner + 2 borders I get bracket. Fine — brackets it is, subtle opacity 0.5. **Masthead design:** - h1: Fraunces, font-size clamp(44px, 8vmin, 76px), weight 900, letter-spacing -0.02em, line-height 0.9. Maybe italic "Snake" with a red period. The red period ties to food color — nice signature typographic accent. - Sub: Space Mono 10-11px, letter-spacing 0.14em, uppercase, opacity 0.55: "A GAME OF APPETITE · GRID 21×21 · SINCE 1976". - Ledger right: SCORE number big mono 700 (like 40px), BEST smaller (20px) beneath or beside. Baseline aligned with h1 bottom. On narrow screens stack? Flex wrap handles it. Maybe a thin rule under masthead (1px ink, with a thicker 3px segment left portion? like editorial rules). A double rule (1px + 3px gap 1px) is classic newspaper. I'll add border-bottom: double? Use border-bottom: 2px solid ink + after 3px another 1px line via box-shadow: 0 5px 0 -4px? Simplest: a div.rule with border-top 2px and border-bottom 1px, height 4px. Newspaper style. Footer: left: keys legend small mono; right: mute button (icon + label "SOUND ON/OFF"), styled as underlined text button with speaker SVG. Caption under board: "FIG. 1 — THE GARDEN · 21 × 21 · WALLS ARE FATAL" centered small mono opacity .55. **Paper noise overlay:** ```css .noise { position:fixed; inset:0; pointer-events:none; opacity:.05; background-image:url("data:image/svg+xml,..."); mix-blend-mode: multiply? } ``` feTurbulence data URI. Keep opacity ~0.04-0.06. z-index top. Also add slight vignette? Skip vignette. Also give the page a very subtle paper tint variation via radial? Skip. **Fonts loading:** Google Fonts link with `display=swap`. Fraunces: weights 600;900 + italic 900? I'll request "Fraunces:ital,opsz,wght@0,9..144,600;0,9..144,900;1,9..144,900" and Space Mono 400;700. **Edge cases:** - Rapid direction changes: queue. - Food spawn not on snake: loop random until empty (with fallback scan). - Pause during ready: ignore. - Resize: recompute cell size; canvas rescales; positions are in cell units → all good; also DPR. - rAF loop always running (draws idle breathing even in ready, and dead state fade). **Death visual:** I want a bit more than gray fade. Idea: on death, the snake's stroke does a quick "recoil" — head stops, and a small burst of ink specks? Let me do: screen shake (CSS class on board-wrap, keyframes translate ±3px, 300ms), snake color lerps to gray over 500ms, and width deflates 20%. Plus stamp at +550ms. Enough. Also "flash" the collided wall/edge? Could draw a red tick at collision point. Small: draw an X mark in red at the collision cell for 400ms. Nice detail — like an editor's X. I'll add: deathMark cell → draw two red strokes forming X, fading. **Scoring niceties:** Score = foods eaten. Display padded 3. **Speed:** tickMs = max(68, 150 - score*3). At score 27 → 69ms. Good curve. **Bulge & interpolation sync:** bulge pos in "cells from head" should move with the snake: since the whole snake advances 1 cell per tick, and the swallowed blob stays at fixed board position-ish (actually it travels down the body as the head moves past), the bulge's s-position increases by 1 per tick: pos = initialPos + ticksElapsed + t_progress. Store bulge as {born: tickCount} and compute pos = (tickCount - born) + t. Wait: at the moment of eating (mid-tick t when head reaches food), bulge at s=0. Next tick, it's at s=1... but actually as the head moves forward, the food position relative to head increases by 1 per tick — yes pos = (tickCount - bornTick) + t where t is current interpolation progress, bornTick = tickCount at eat. But interpolation t applies to positions; the bulge should be between vertices too — continuous formula pos = ticksSince + t is smooth. Also when eating, the head is at the food at t→1 of that tick. Eat happens during tick processing (t resets to 0 after). So set born = tickCount (after increment), pos = t (0 at start). Good. **Draw spine with variable width:** iterate i from 0..n-2: from p_i to p_{i+1}, lineWidth = widthAt(i+0.5), stroke each as separate path with lineCap 'round'. Overlap between segments: consecutive strokes share vertex; round caps make it seamless when widths similar. Tapering head→tail means each subsequent slightly thinner — overlapping round caps fine. But sharper look: also draw circles at each vertex with widthAt(i)? Might create scalloping. With ~21 cells max length and cell ~24px, segment strokes with round caps should look smooth enough. Also add slight smoothing of the polyline? Optional: use quadratic curve through midpoints for smoother spine (Chaikin-like). Let me do midpoint quadratic smoothing: path through midpoints with quadraticCurveTo(vertices). But variable width per segment complicates. I'll keep straight segments with round joins — grid game, slight angularity is fine and reads "ink pen on grid paper". Actually to make it look more organic, I could round corners by drawing with lineJoin round on a single path — but variable width prevents single path. Compromise: draw two passes: pass 1: single smoothed path stroke with the base average width? No. Alternative technique: draw the snake as a filled shape computed from spine normals (offset polygon). More complex but gives perfect variable width. Given max length ~440, computing outline each frame is fine perf-wise. But corners: miter issues. Round-join via arcs... overkill. Segment-stroke approach is pragmatic and looks good. Keep it. I'll also subdivide each cell segment into 2 (midpoints) so taper looks smoother — with bulges, subdividing helps. Subdivide 3× per segment? Cheap: n vertices → sample points every 0.34 cells. Width varies per sub-segment. Let me subdivide each vertex-pair into 3 subsegments. n up to 440 → 1300 strokes/frame worst case... heavy but rare; typical < 60 segments → 180 strokes, fine. Cap subdivision for long snakes: if length > 60, subdivide 1×. Simple adaptive: sub = length > 80 ? 1 : 3. Hmm wait, actually simpler and smoother: for width variation I can group: draw per ORIGINAL segment with width at midpoint — with round caps at each vertex of tapering width, joins are seamless because consecutive widths differ by tiny amounts. The taper across whole body: headW=0.66, tailW=0.30 → per segment delta ≈ (0.36/L). For L=5: 0.07 cells per segment — visible steps? Round caps hide it mostly. Subdivide 3× reduces steps to 0.024. I'll subdivide ×3 for L<40, ×2 for L<120, else ×1. Fine. Also idle 'ready' breathing: width multiplier 1 + 0.03*sin(now*2.2) applied globally. Subtle. **Interpolation from[] handling when restarting or after eat:** - After eat: newCells length = old+1. from array = oldCells padded: from[i] = oldCells[min(i, oldLen-1)]. ✓. - Normal move: from = oldCells (same length). ✓. - On restart from ready with rebuild: from = previous ready cells (horizontal), to = rebuilt direction cells. Lengths: ready length 3 → rebuilt length 3 ✓ (same array length; head same, others lerp to new spots). ✓ set prevFrom accordingly. Keep two arrays: `cells` (current), `prev` (snapshot before tick). On tick: prev = cells.slice() BEFORE mutation? Careful: for normal move, to[i] = newCells[i] and from[i] = oldCells[i]; since newCells[i] = oldCells[i-1], I can compute: prev = cells.slice(); then mutate cells (unshift new head; pop tail unless grow). Then from[i] = prev[i], to[i] = cells[i] — lengths: normal move: cells.length == prev.length ✓ (popped one, added one). Grow: cells.length = prev.length+1, from[i] for i=prev.length → pad with prev[last]. In draw: fromAt(i) = prev[Math.min(i, prev.length-1)]. ✓. **Direction as {x,y}.** Input mapping: ArrowUp/w → {0,-1} etc. Reverse check: candidate dir + currentDir == 0 (dx sum 0 and dy sum 0) → invalid. Current dir = last applied or last queued (use `dir` variable updated on tick; queue validated against the tail of queue or current dir). **Now let me also handle 'win':** if no empty cell for food → state 'win', stamp "PERFECTION" — golden? Keep red. Rare; fine. **HTML overlays:** positioned absolute inside board-wrap (which is position:relative). - #veilStart: center, text: big "PRESS ANY ARROW" (Fraunces italic? Mono?) — I'd style: Space Mono 12px letterspaced uppercase + a pulsing red square? Let me design: a small stack: [arrow glyph row] then "PRESS ANY ARROW TO BEGIN" blinking slowly. Font: Space Mono 700, 13px, ls .18em. Blink via CSS animation opacity 1↔0.25 steps? Smooth pulse 1.4s. - #veilPause: "PAUSED — SPACE TO RESUME". - #veilDead: the stamp + subtext. Click also restarts (tap support): stage click when dead → restart; when ready → start (needs direction though; on touch, swipe provides dir; tap alone starts moving right? For touch users: tap to start → start moving in facing dir (right). Reasonable: first swipe sets dir; if they tap, start right.) Add hint for touch in start veil: alternate line "OR SWIPE" — show based on pointer? Just include "PRESS AN ARROW — OR SWIPE — TO BEGIN" concise: "ARROWS TO MOVE · SPACE TO START"? Keep: line1 "PRESS ANY ARROW TO BEGIN", line2 small "swipe on touch screens". Hmm the start also via swipe immediately (swipe sets dir + starts). Good. **Sounds toggle button:** inline SVG speaker; label swaps. Also key M. Let me now also think about the footer legend: `←↑→↓ / WASD — MOVE · SPACE — PAUSE · M — SOUND` plus button. On mobile the legend less relevant but fine. **One more flourish — the title's red period could subtly pulse?** Or better: the period IS the food indicator — it pulses in sync with the food on the board! Cute meta detail: same pulse phase. Easy: animate the span scale via JS same sine. Subtle signature. I'll sync via CSS variable --pulse set in rAF: dot.style transform scale(1+0.12*sin). Nice. Also when the snake eats, the title period does a quick pop (scale 1.5→1). Ha — connecting HUD to game. Include (class pop reuse). **Accessibility bits:** button aria-labels, role. Keep light. Now write the code carefully. CSS variables: ``` --paper:#F2EDE2; --paper-hi:#F8F4EA; --ink:#1B1913; --ink-soft:rgba(27,25,19,.55); --line:rgba(27,25,19,.08); --red:#D8442B; ``` Board wrap border: 2px solid var(--ink); background: var(--paper-hi); border-radius: 3px? Print sheets have square corners — radius 2. Add box-shadow? A hard offset shadow (like a printed card lifted): box-shadow: 6px 6px 0 rgba(27,25,19,0.08)? Hmm, a flat offset shadow adds depth in a print-y way. Subtle: 8px 8px 0 rgba(27,25,19,.06). I like it — keeps flat aesthetic with slight lift. Now sizes: masthead h1 with Fraunces optical size — set font-variation? Just font-family 'Fraunces'; font-weight 900; font-style italic? "Snake." in italic 900 Fraunces looks lovely, calligraphic-adjacent, fits ink theme. Yes italic. Let me write the JS in a clean structured way (~350 lines). I'll be careful about correctness. Pseudocode: ```js const COLS=21, ROWS=21; const cvs=document.getElementById('board'), ctx=cvs.getContext('2d'); let cell=24, dpr=1, sizePx=0; state: 'ready'|'running'|'paused'|'dead'|'win' let cells=[], prev=[], dir={x:1,y:0}, queue=[], food=null, foodPhase=rand let score=0, best=+(localStorage...)||0 let tickMs=150, acc=0, last=0, tickCount=0 let bulges=[], ripples=[], deathAt=0, deadX=null (mark cell), newBest=false let growPend? handled inline. function reset(){ const cx=(COLS-1)>>1, cy=(ROWS-1)>>1; cells=[{x:cx,y:cy},{x:cx-1,y:cy},{x:cx-2,y:cy}]; prev=cells.map(c=>({...c})); dir={x:1,y:0}; queue=[]; score=0; tickMs=150; acc=0; tickCount=0; bulges=[]; ripples=[]; deathAt=0; deadMark=null; newBest=false; placeFood(); updateHUD(); setOverlays(); } function rebuildForDir(d){ // at ready-start const h=cells[0]; cells=[h,{x:h.x-d.x,y:h.y-d.y},{x:h.x-2*d.x,y:h.y-2*d.y}]; // if out of bounds (near wall), clamp by trimming? head at center so fine dir=d; } function placeFood(){ const free=[]; for x,y: if !cells.some(...) free.push if(!free.length){ win(); return } food = free[rand] } function tick(){ tickCount++; // apply queued dir while(queue.length){ const d=queue.shift(); if(!(d.x===-dir.x&&d.y===-dir.y)&&!(d.x===dir.x&&d.y===dir.y)){ dir=d; break } } prev = cells.map(c=>({...c})); const h={x:cells[0].x+dir.x, y:cells[0].y+dir.y}; // collide? const outside = h.x<0||h.y<0||h.x>=COLS||h.y>=ROWS; const willGrow = food && h.x===food.x&&h.y===food.y; const bodyCheckLen = willGrow? cells.length : cells.length-1; // tail vacates if not growing let hit=null; if(outside) hit={x:clamp(h.x),y:clamp(h.y)}; // mark at wall edge cell else for(let i=0;ibest){best=score;newBest=true;save} updateHUD(); stamp show after delay via setTimeout 550 or check in draw (time-based → better: veilDead gets class 'show' when now-deathAt>550; handle in rAF with flag) sound death; shake class on wrap. ``` Input lockout: ignore restart inputs until now-deathAt>500. updateHUD(): score text pad3, best pad3. Draw loop: ```js function frame(now){ requestAnimationFrame(frame); const dt=Math.min(100, now-last); last=now; if(state==='running'){ acc+=dt; let guard=0; while(acc>=tickMs&&state==='running'&&guard++<5){ tick(); acc-=tickMs; } if(state!=='running') acc=0; } const t = state==='running' ? Math.min(1, acc/tickMs) : (state==='dead'?1: ...); ``` Hmm t for paused: freeze at current acc (paused keeps acc). For dead: t=1 (snap to final). For ready: t=1 (snake at rest). OK: t = state==='running'? acc/tickMs : 1. But pause freezes acc so t frozen — good. draw(now, t). Draw grid: vertical lines x=0..COLS, strokeStyle line color; heavier every 5? At 21 cells, lines at indices 0..21; heavy when i%5===0? Edges covered by CSS border; heavy lines at 5,10,15 crossing board. Also maybe dot-grid instead of lines? Graph paper = lines. Lines at 1px alpha .09; every 5th alpha .14. Hmm wait, heavy lines might visually segment the board; keep gentle difference. Draw food (if state!=='dead'? Keep food visible even dead — fine keep): ``` pulse = 1+0.09*Math.sin(now/260) r=cell*0.30*pulse fill red circle at center; darker rim stroke 1.5px rgba(ink? darker red #A93320); highlight: small paper dot at (-0.3r,-0.35r) radius r*0.22? Actually crescent: circle fill '#F8F4EA' alpha .85 radius r*0.18 at offset (-r*0.32,-r*0.35). ``` Ripples: for each, age=(now-t0)/450; if>1 remove; radius=cell*(0.3+age*2.2); alpha=(1-age)*0.5; stroke red lineWidth 2*(1-age)+0.5. Snake: ``` pts = cells.map((c,i)=>{ const f=prevAt(i); return { x:(f.x+(c.x-f.x)*t+0.5)*cell, y:(...)*cell } }) ``` prevAt(i)=prev[Math.min(i,prev.length-1)]. Wait — subtle issue: for interpolated body, points spacing: to[i]-from[i]... verified fine. Head direction vector: v = pts[0]-pts[1] normalized (if len<0.001 use dir). Dead color lerp: k = min(1,(now-deathAt)/500); color = lerp ink→ #8B857A gray. Also width factor (1-0.25k). Pre-dead k=0. widths: ``` L = cells.length (approx arc length in cells; but during interpolation actual arc ~ (L-1)+t... whatever, use L) headW=cell*0.68, tailW=cell*0.30 function widthAt(s){ let w = headW + (tailW-headW)*Math.min(1, s/Math.max(4,L*0.85)); // taper done by s=0.85L for(b of bulges){ const p=(tickCount-b.born)+t; const d=(s-p)/0.6; w += cell*0.30*Math.exp(-d*d); } w *= breathe * deadShrink return w } ``` Wait taper: near head keep wide for a couple cells then taper: w = lerp(headW, tailW, smoothstep(0, max(4, L-1), s)). Use sSmooth = clamp(s/(Math.max(4,(L-1))),0,1); w=headW+(tailW-headW)*sSmooth^0.9. fine. Head radius: widthAt(0)/2 * 1.18? draw circle r=widthAt(0)*0.62? Let me define headR = widthAt(0)*0.60 (slightly larger than half). Eyes at head + v*(headR*0.25) ± perp*headR*0.45, radius headR*0.17, fill paper-hi. Hmm eyes while dead: draw X eyes? Cute! When dead, eyes drawn as tiny x strokes (two crossing lines) instead of dots — classic dead-sketch. Very on-theme for ink. Yes: dead → draw small x marks at eye positions, red? Ink-colored tiny x. Do it: strokeStyle paper? On dark head, x in paper color visible. Draw two lines each eye length headR*0.3. Lovely detail. Tongue: state running or ready; dist head→food in cells; if dist<4.2: flickPhase = (now%1400); if flickPhase<220: extend = sin(flickPhase/220*π); tongue from head+v*headR to +v*(headR+cell*0.34*extend), red lineWidth cell*0.06, fork: two short lines at tip ±30°. Draw BEFORE head circle? Tongue comes out of mouth → draw tongue after head circle but emanating from edge: start at head + v*headR*0.9. OK. Subdivide & stroke: ``` const sub = L>90?1: L>40?2:3; build sample list: for i in 0..n-2: for k in 0..sub-1: p = lerp(pts[i],pts[i+1],k/sub) → plus final point pts[n-1]. Then for each consecutive sample pair (s index m): width from mIndex = (arc pos). Track arc pos: samples have s = i + k/sub. stroke seg with width widthAt(mid s). ``` Implementation: samples array of {x,y,s}. Then loop pairs. Stroke color ink lerp as computed. ctx.lineCap='round'. Perf: fine. Also draw deadMark X (red, fading over 700ms): two lines across cell center, lineWidth 3, alpha (1-age). Board shake: CSS class 'shake' on wrap, remove after animationend / 350ms. Overlays via state: - ready → veilStart show - paused → veilPause show - dead → veilDead show after 550ms (add class in frame check once) - running → none. I'll manage classes in a setUI(state) function + delayed stamp via checking in frame: if(state==='dead' && !stampShown && now-deathAt>550){show}. Input: ```js const KEYMAP={ArrowUp:U,KeyW:U,...} window.addEventListener('keydown',e=>{ if(e.code==='Space'||KEYMAP[e.code]) e.preventDefault(); ensureAudio(); if(e.code==='KeyM'){toggleMute();return} if(e.code==='Space'){ if(state==='running'){pause()} else if(state==='paused'){resume()} else if(state==='ready'){start({x:1,y:0})} // default right? or keep facing else if(state==='dead'&&now-deathAt>600){toReady()} return; } const d=KEYMAP[e.code]; if(!d) return; if(state==='ready'){ start(d); } else if(state==='running'){ pushDir(d) } else if(state==='paused'){ resume(); pushDir(d) } else if(state==='dead'&&elapsed>600){ toReady(); start(d) } }); ``` start(d): rebuildForDir(d) — wait rebuild uses cells currently horizontal; set from=cells snapshot so interpolation animates the swing: prev=cells.map(copy); then rebuild cells; then state='running'; acc=0; tickCount unchanged; sound start. Hmm — one nuance: rebuild sets cells[1],cells[2] = head-d, head-2d. If those go out of bounds? Head at center (10,10) → cells (9,10),(8,10) or vertical etc. All in bounds ✓. Also after start, first tick will move head. Direction queue: pushDir(d): last = queue.length?queue[queue.length-1]:dir; if reverse(last) or same → ignore; queue.push (cap 3). pause(): state='paused'; sound; setUI. resume(): state='running'; last=performance.now()? acc unchanged; fine. Actually rAF continues; when paused we don't accumulate. Set acc stays. Also lastTimestamp continuity handled since dt computed each frame and only added when running. ✓ visibilitychange: if hidden && running → pause(). Touch: on stage: touchstart record; touchmove: preventDefault (need passive:false); touchend: dx,dy; if max(|dx|,|dy|)>24 → dir → same handling as key (ready→start, running→pushDir, dead→restart+start). If tap (small move): if ready → start(right); if dead && elapsed → toReady() (then user swipes/taps again to start — tap on ready starts). Simplify: tap on dead → toReady(); tap on ready → start(right)? For touch UX: tap-to-start moving right, then swipes steer. Good. Wait, tapping to restart from dead goes to ready (not auto-start) — then a second tap starts. Or make dead-tap go directly: toReady(); start(right)? Might feel abrupt. toReady() shows "press any arrow" veil → tap again starts. Two taps annoying? One tap → ready, next tap starts. Hmm, actually let me make tap on dead → toReady() and immediately the start veil says "TAP OR PRESS ARROW" — I'll phrase start veil: "PRESS ANY ARROW — OR TAP — TO BEGIN"? On desktop it's "press any arrow"; showing both fine: "PRESS ANY ARROW · TAP · SWIPE". Simplest text: "PRESS ANY ARROW TO BEGIN" + sub "touch: swipe or tap". Fine. Actually simpler and snappier: tap when dead → toReady() + start({x:1,y:0})? If they died facing somewhere, instantly restarting right might surprise. I'll go with the two-step (restart → ready). Keyboard users: space → ready, then arrow starts. Hmm that's also two steps for keyboard. Alternative: dead + any arrow → instantly restart AND start in that direction (I wrote that above). And space → ready (deliberate). Touch: swipe when dead → restart+start that dir (same as arrow). Tap → ready. Good, snappy for the common case. Resize: ```js function fit(){ const stage=...; const w=stage.clientWidth, h=stage.clientHeight; sizePx = Math.floor(Math.min(w,h)) - 0; // leave breathing cell = sizePx/COLS; dpr=Math.min(2,devicePixelRatio||1); cvs.style.width=sizePx+'px'; cvs.style.height=sizePx+'px'; cvs.width=Math.round(sizePx*dpr); cvs.height=Math.round(sizePx*dpr); ctx.setTransform(dpr,0,0,dpr,0,0); boardWrap.style.width/height = sizePx+'px' (for crop marks + overlays positioning) } ``` board-wrap wraps canvas exactly: set wrap size, canvas 100%. Stage is flex:1 min-height:0 — measure clientHeight. ResizeObserver or window resize listener. Use both: window resize + initial after fonts? call fit() on load and resize. Audio: ```js let actx=null, master=null, muted = localStorage['inksnake-muted']==='1'; function ensureAudio(){ if(actx) return; try{ actx=new (AudioContext||webkitAudioContext)(); master=actx.createGain(); master.gain.value=0.16; master.connect(actx.destination);}catch(e){} } function blip(freq0,freq1,dur,type='triangle',vol=1,delay=0){ if(!actx||muted) return; const t0=actx.currentTime+delay; const o=actx.createOscillator(), g=actx.createGain(); o.type=type; o.frequency.setValueAtTime(freq0,t0); o.frequency.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(Math.max(1,freq1),t0+dur); g.gain.setValueAtTime(0.0001,t0); g.gain.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(vol,t0+0.012); g.gain.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(0.0001,t0+dur); o.connect(g).connect(master); o.start(t0); o.stop(t0+dur+0.05); } eat: blip(430+score*7, 860+score*7, .12,'triangle',.9) — pitch rises with score, resets each game (score-based). death: blip(200,52,.5,'sawtooth',.5); blip(140,40,.6,'triangle',.6) start: blip(300,520,.09) pause: blip(420,240,.12) ``` Mute toggle updates icon (two inline SVGs, toggle hidden) + localStorage. HUD pop CSS: ```css .num.pop{animation:pop .3s} @keyframes pop{40%{transform:scale(1.28)}} display inline-block needed. ``` Stamp CSS: ```css .stamp{position:absolute; inset:0; display:flex; ... background:rgba(242,237,226,.62); opacity:0; pointer-events:none; transition? } .stamp.show{opacity:1} .stamp .box{border:3px solid var(--red); color:var(--red); padding:10px 22px; transform:rotate(-5deg); font:Space Mono 700; letter-spacing:.22em; } .stamp.show .box{animation:slam .38s cubic-bezier(.2,1.4,.3,1) both} @keyframes slam{from{transform:rotate(-5deg) scale(2.6); opacity:0} 60%{opacity:1} to{transform:rotate(-5deg) scale(1)}} ``` Add slight roughen: box-shadow inset? Add second border offset? Keep clean. Maybe text has mix of "GAME OVER" + rule + score line inside the box. And a subtle red radial texture? no. Also add small "ink bleed" effect on stamp: text-shadow? Skip. Start/pause veils: plain centered text with paper wash rgba(.55) for pause, none (transparent) for start? Start with light wash .45 to focus. Text ink color. Blinking: `animation: blink 1.6s ease-in-out infinite` opacity .25→1. Fonts and sizes final: ```css h1{font:italic 900 clamp(46px,7.5vmin,84px)/0.95 'Fraunces',serif; letter-spacing:-.015em} ``` Actually Fraunces italic 900 — the "S" swash lovely. Sub line under h1: Space Mono 10.5px ls .18em uppercase color ink-soft, margin-top 6px. Ledger numbers: Space Mono 700, score font-size clamp(30px,4.6vmin,52px), best 55% of that with opacity .5. Labels 10px ls .2em above numbers. Layout masthead: flex, align-items flex-end, justify-content space-between, gap. Rule below (border-top 2px ink; then 1px line 3px below → use .rule{height:5px;border-top:2px solid ink;border-bottom:1px solid ink; margin:10px 0 14px}). Wait classic newspaper double rule: thick over thin ✓. Footer: margin-top 12px; display flex space-between; small mono 10.5px ls .12em color ink-soft. Left legend uses spans with kbd style? kbd{border:1px solid rgba(ink,.35); padding:1px 5px; border-radius:3px; font 10px} — nice detail. Right: mute button: display inline-flex gap 6px align center; border:1px solid rgba(ink,.3); padding 4px 10px; radius 999px; background transparent; hover bg ink & color paper (inverted hover — crisp). Cursor pointer. Caption: centered, margin-top 10px, 10px mono ls .18em, opacity .5. Wait ordering: masthead, rule, stage(board), caption, footer. Board wrap margin auto center within stage. Let me now also decide page padding: .sheet{padding: clamp(14px,2.5vmin,28px) clamp(16px,4vmin,44px); height:100dvh; box-sizing:border-box; display:flex; flex-direction:column; max-width:1100px; margin:0 auto; width:100%}. Stage: flex:1 1 auto; min-height:120px; position:relative; display:flex; align-items:center; justify-content:center; padding: 14px 0? some. fit(): size = Math.min(stage.clientWidth, stage.clientHeight) - small margin (say 4). Also ensure ≥ 200. One more consideration: iframe rendering — no special constraints beyond self-contained. Use Google Fonts CDN links (allowed, external CDN refs OK). Also add preconnect. Title dot sync: in frame: dot.style.transform=`scale(${1+0.10*Math.max(0,Math.sin(now/260))})`? Food pulse: 1+0.09*sin(now/260). Dot same formula → synced. Set transform-origin center; display inline-block. Edge: ctx transforms with setTransform each fit — but I call ctx.setTransform in fit only; in draw use save/restore as needed. Fine. Also I want the board interior to have slight inset hairline? The 2px border outside suffices. Let me now also double-check tick guard: while(acc>=tickMs) loop — after die() inside tick, state!=='running' → loop exits ✓ (condition includes state check). t computation: after loop, if running: t=acc/tickMs (0..1). else t=1 (ready/dead/win). But paused should freeze mid-motion: acc preserved, but we set t=... if paused use acc/tickMs too! Let me: t = (state==='running'||state==='paused') ? Math.min(1,acc/tickMs) : 1. On death mid-tick? die happens inside tick before mutation; acc -= tickMs already? In loop: tick() then acc-=tickMs. If tick died, acc -= tickMs still runs — then t would be acc/tickMs≈0 but state dead → t=1 → snake snapped to previous cells (prev==cells since die returned before mutation) ✓ good: die path leaves cells untouched, t=1 shows rest pose. ✓ Ready state: prev==cells copies ✓ t=1 ✓. Bulge pos uses t: (tickCount-born)+t — when paused freezes ✓. Now the start() rebuild: prev=copy(cells); cells rebuilt; t should be 0 → but state='running', acc=0 → t=0 ✓ smooth swing from horizontal to new dir over first tick. Also initial ready pose: cells horizontal [center, left1, left2] facing right. After rebuild with dir d: [h, h-d, h-2d]. Interpolation from horizontal to that. ✓ placeFood at reset: random free cell — avoid spawning right next to head? Minor; also avoid the cell directly in front? Not necessary. Also nice: spawn food at least 3 cells from head for fairness at start: filter free cells with dist>3; if none fallback all free. At start plenty. ✓ updateHUD: scoreEl.textContent=String(score).padStart(3,'0'); best similarly. Now stamps & veils content: veilDead (#stamp): ```html
GAME OVER
SCORE 012 — BEST 030
NEW BEST — WELL FED
SPACE OR ANY ARROW TO GO AGAIN
``` Hmm hint outside box, below, blinking small. Pause veil: "PAUSED" big + "SPACE TO RESUME" small blinking. Start veil: "PRESS ANY ARROW" big-ish + sub "touch: swipe or tap" small + blinking. Actually make start veil main text in Fraunces italic? Like "hungry?" italic lowercase — editorial charm: big italic Fraunces "Ready?" Hmm. Let me: main line Fraunces italic 700 28px "Ready when you are." then mono blinking "PRESS ANY ARROW TO BEGIN". That's charming. But too wordy? It's a game splash; fine. Keep: line1 italic Fraunces "Ready when you are." (24-30px), line2 mono blinking "PRESS ANY ARROW — OR SWIPE — TO BEGIN". Pause veil similar: Fraunces italic "Catching breath." + mono "SPACE TO RESUME". Cute, consistent voice. Dead stamp uses mono for stamp aesthetics. Veils styling: position absolute inset 0, display flex column center, gap 10px, background rgba(248,244,234,0.55) (start), pause .65; text-align center; pointer-events: none? For tap-to-start I listen on stage/window touch — veils pointer-events none so touches hit stage. But clicks: I have click handler on wrap? I'll handle clicks on boardWrap for tap-to-start/restart (mousedown). pointer-events none on veils so wrap gets it. ✓ Hidden class: .veil{opacity:0; visibility:hidden; transition:opacity .25s} .veil.show{opacity:1; visibility:visible}. Stamp box animation triggers on .show ✓. Now the shake keyframes: ```css .shake{animation:shake .35s} @keyframes shake{20%{transform:translate(3px,-2px)}40%{transform:translate(-3px,2px)}60%{transform:translate(2px,1px)}80%{transform:translate(-2px,-1px)}} ``` Applied to boardWrap. Remove on animationend. Crop marks: ```css .cm{position:absolute;width:14px;height:14px;pointer-events:none;opacity:.5} .cm.tl{top:-13px;left:-13px;border-top:2px solid var(--ink);border-left:2px solid var(--ink)}... ``` Hmm these brackets at -13 offset draw outside. With offset shadow 8px on bottom-right, marks might collide visually — bottom-right shadow + br mark at bottom-right... The shadow is subtle. Fine. Actually wait — do brackets at corners + offset shadow read cluttered? Keep marks opacity .45, thin 1.5px. OK. Noise overlay data URI: ```css .noise{position:fixed;inset:0;z-index:50;pointer-events:none;opacity:.05;background:url("data:image/svg+xml;utf8,")} ``` Need URL-encoding: quotes ok if using single inside; '#' → %23. Use utf8 with minimal escaping. ✓ z-index below nothing interactive... veils are inside board; noise on top of everything at 5% multiply — fine, adds texture over UI too (paper feel). mix-blend-mode:multiply might darken; plain opacity fine (rect is grayscale noise). Actually feTurbulence produces colored noise by default; add filter attribute? Colored at 5% barely noticeable tint — acceptable, or add ``. I'll add saturate 0 for neutral grain. Selection color / focus outlines: minor, add ::selection paper/ink inverse. Also prevent context menu long-press on canvas? touch-action:none on stage to stop scroll during swipes; also `-webkit-user-select:none` on body? on game area. Prevent double-tap zoom: touch-action none handles within board. Meta viewport user-scalable=no included. Now write draw() fully: ```js function draw(now){ const t = (state==='running'||state==='paused') ? Math.min(1, acc/tickMs) : 1; ctx.clearRect(0,0,sizePx,sizePx); // bg ctx.fillStyle=C.paperHi; ctx.fillRect(0,0,sizePx,sizePx); // grid ctx.lineWidth=1; for(let i=1;i{ let u=Math.min(1, s/Math.max(4,(L-1)*0.9)); let w=(headW+(tailW-headW)*(u*u*(3-2*u))); for(const b of bulges){ const p=(tickCount-b.born)+t; const d=(s-p)/0.62; w+=cell*0.34*Math.exp(-d*d); } return Math.max(1,w*breathe*shrink); }; // samples const sub = L>100?1 : L>44?2 : 3; const samples=[]; for(let i=0;i1){ const dx=head.x-pts[1].x, dy=head.y-pts[1].y; const m=Math.hypot(dx,dy); if(m>0.5){vx=dx/m;vy=dy/m} } const hr=widthAt(0)*0.60*1.06; // tongue first (under head? tongue should come from mouth front — draw after body, before head circle so base hidden) if(state!=='dead' && food){ const dcell=Math.hypot(food.x-cells[0].x, food.y-cells[0].y); const ph=now%1500; if(dcell<4.5 && ph<260){ const ext=Math.sin(ph/260*Math.PI); const bx=head.x+vx*hr*0.9, by=...; const tx=head.x+vx*(hr+cell*0.38*ext), ty=...; red line bx,by→tx,ty width cell*0.07; fork: two lines from tip ± perpendicular rotated: tipL = t + rot(v,±25°)*cell*0.12*ext... }} // head circle ctx.fillStyle=ink; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(head.x,head.y,hr,0,7); ctx.fill(); // eyes const ex=head.x+vx*hr*0.30, ey=head.y+vy*hr*0.30; perp px=-vy,py=vx; for(s of [-1,1]){ const cx2=ex+px*hr*0.48*s, cy2=ey+py*hr*0.48*s; if(k>0.5){ // x eyes ctx.strokeStyle=C.paperHi; ctx.lineWidth=Math.max(1,cell*0.045); const e=hr*0.16; line(cx2-e,cy2-e,cx2+e,cy2+e); line(cx2-e,cy2+e,cx2+e,cy2-e); } else { ctx.fillStyle=C.paperHi; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(cx2,cy2,hr*0.16,0,7); ctx.fill(); } } ``` Dead x-eyes appear after k>0.5 (≈225ms). Cute. mix(color, target, k): precompute rgb ints: ink = [27,25,19]; deadInk=[133,127,118]. Return `rgb(...)`. Food draw: ```js if(food){ const cx=(food.x+0.5)*cell, cy=...; const pulse=1+0.09*Math.sin(now/260); const r=cell*0.30*pulse; ctx.fillStyle=C.red; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(cx,cy,r,0,7); ctx.fill(); ctx.strokeStyle='rgba(27,25,19,.35)'? rim in darker red '#A93320' lw1.5 arc r-0.75? Actually a rim same radius stroke darker red: subtle. highlight: ctx.fillStyle='rgba(248,244,234,.9)'; arc(cx-r*0.32, cy-r*0.35, r*0.2) } ``` Dead mark X: ```js if(deadMark){ const age=(now-deathAt)/650; if(age<1){ const m=(deadMark.x+0.5)*cell...; const s=cell*0.22; ctx.strokeStyle=`rgba(216,68,43,${1-age})`; lw 3; two lines } else deadMark=null } ``` For wall collision, deadMark = clamped head cell — X drawn at boundary cell. Also draw a red short line ON the wall edge crossed? X at cell is enough. Ripples array update in draw (filter by age). OK, also win(): state='win' → show stamp with title "PERFECTION" & subline "THE GARDEN IS FULL". Rare. I'll wire: placeFood sets food=null; if none → win: state='win'; show veilDead variant with text changed. Implement: function endGame(title,line). die uses "GAME OVER". Fine. Sound on eat uses score AFTER increment: blip(420+ (score%12)*30 ...). Let me pitch = 380*Math.pow(1.045, score%24) — climbing ladder reset by modulo? Ladder resets feel odd; simple rising with cap: freq=420+Math.min(14,score)*26. ok. Now HUD "pop": function pop(el){ el.classList.remove('pop'); void el.offsetWidth; el.classList.add('pop'); } Title dot: id "dot". Mute button svg swap: two paths toggled via hidden attr. Let me write SVGs: ```html ``` Toggle .on/.off display via parent class .muted. Now the footer legend with : ```html ←↑→↓ move · space pause · M sound ``` Hmm arrows inside kbd — fine. Responsive: on small screens hide legend? Keep, wraps. Font sizes small (10-11px) mono uppercase. Let me assemble the whole file now, carefully, watching for bugs. Also: `ensureAudio` must be called on keydown/touch — note AudioContext may start suspended; call actx.resume() in ensureAudio if exists. One more check — the tick() while loop and dir application: I apply only ONE queued dir per tick (shift until valid found, apply first valid, leave rest). My loop: `while(queue.length){ d=shift; if valid {dir=d; break} }` — consumes invalid ones. ✓ Reverse check at application vs current dir ✓. Edge: user presses two quick dirs (up then left) → queue holds both, applied over two ticks. ✓ classic. Food eaten check also should verify head lands on food AFTER tail pop? Order: compute willGrow if head==food BEFORE moving; tail pop skipped when growing so tail stays — no collision confusion. ✓ Self-collision check uses bodyCheckLen = grow? cells.length : cells.length-1 — but careful: when not growing, tail cell vacates THIS tick, so head may move into old tail ✓ excluded (index length-1 excluded). ✓ Also collision with cell index 0..len-2 (includes current head — head can't equal new head since dir≠0). ✓ placeFood free scan O(COLS*ROWS*len) fine. Now DPI + crisp 1px grid lines: with dpr scale, 1px lines at dpr2 crisp enough. Offset lines by 0.5? With scaling it's fine. Let me also consider: the canvas has CSS size set; wrap has border 2px → wrap size should include border? Set wrap width = sizePx + 4 (border-box with box-sizing border-box → set width = sizePx+4 so inner content = sizePx). Simpler: wrap uses box-sizing:content-box? Default content-box: width=sizePx → total sizePx+4. Canvas inside width 100%? Canvas style width set to sizePx explicitly, that equals content box ✓. But fit() sets wrap.style.width = sizePx+'px' (content-box semantics by default for non-* sizing) ✓. Overlays inset 0 cover content box (padding box) — fine. Now the masthead baseline: h1 huge; ledger right aligned bottom. Use flex align-items:flex-end. Fraunces variable "opsz" — Google Fonts static delivery: specifying wght 900 ital 900 with opsz axis auto. My link: `family=Fraunces:ital,wght@0,600;1,600;1,900` — I'll request `Fraunces:ital,opsz,wght@0,9..144,600;1,9..144,400;1,9..144,900` to get optical sizing. Keep it simpler: `Fraunces:ital,wght@1,600;1,900` plus maybe upright not needed (only italic used). Title italic 900, veil lines italic 600. Also SOFT/WONK axes default fine. Space Mono: `Space+Mono:ital,wght@0,400;0,700` (has 400,700 only). Fallbacks: serif / monospace. Write the code now. Also remember: no leaking about the system prompt; just present the game with brief explanation after code. Start response without # heading. Let me write out CSS carefully. ```css :root{ --paper:#EFE9DB; --paper-hi:#F7F2E7; --ink:#1C1913; --ink-55:rgba(28,25,19,.55); --ink-30:rgba(28,25,19,.3); --red:#D8442B; } *{box-sizing:border-box; margin:0; Stamp-hint should blink; ✓ class. The dead veil: stamp hint below box. Now JS. Let me write it fully and double check. ```js (()=> { 'use strict'; const COLS=21, ROWS=21; const C={ paperHi:'#F7F2E7', ink:[28,25,19], inkDead:[128,122,112], grid:'rgba(28,25,19,.075)', gridStrong:'rgba(28,25,19,.14)', red:'#D8442B', redDark:'#A93320', hi:'#F7F2E7' }; const cvs=document.getElementById('board'), ctx=cvs.getContext('2d'); const stage=document.getElementById('stage'), wrap=document.getElementById('wrap'); const scoreEl=..., bestEl, dot, veilStart, veilPause, veilDead, deadTitle, deadLine, newBestEl, muteBtn, muteLbl; let cell=24, sizePx=504; let state='ready'; let cells=[], prev=[], dir={x:1,y:0}, queue=[]; let food=null; let score=0, best=parseInt(localStorage.getItem('ink-snake-best')||'0',10)||0; let tickMs=150, acc=0, tickCount=0, last=performance.now(); let bulges=[], ripples=[], deathAt=0, deadMark=null, stampShown=false, newBestFlag=false; const rgb=(c)=>`rgb(${c[0]|0},${c[1]|0},${c[2]|0})`; const mix=(a,b,k)=>[a[0]+(b[0]-a[0])*k, a[1]+(b[1]-a[1])*k, a[2]+(b[2]-a[2])*k]; const pad3=n=>String(n).padStart(3,'0'); function fit(){ const w=stage.clientWidth, h=stage.clientHeight; sizePx=Math.max(180, Math.floor(Math.min(w,h))-8); cell=sizePx/COLS; const dpr=Math.min(2, window.devicePixelRatio||1); wrap.style.width=sizePx+'px'; wrap.style.height=sizePx+'px'; cvs.style.width=sizePx+'px'; cvs.style.height=sizePx+'px'; cvs.width=Math.round(sizePx*dpr); cvs.height=Math.round(sizePx*dpr); ctx.setTransform(dpr,0,0,dpr,0,0); } ``` Wait: wrap default box-sizing from *{box-sizing:border-box} — I set border 2px on wrap; with border-box, width=sizePx means content = sizePx-4 → canvas sizePx overflows. Fix: wrap.style.width=(sizePx+4)+'px' with border-box, or set wrap box-sizing content-box. Easier: width = sizePx + 4. And canvas style width sizePx ✓ (content box = sizePx). Also overlays inset:0 cover border box ✓ fine. Also the shake transform on wrap + box-shadow fine. Reset & state fns: ```js function reset(){ const cx=(COLS-1)/2|0, cy=(ROWS-1)/2|0; cells=[{x:cx,y:cy},{x:cx-1,y:cy},{x:cx-2,y:cy}]; prev=cells.map(c=>({x:c.x,y:c.y})); dir={x:1,y:0}; queue=[]; score=0; tickMs=150; acc=0; tickCount=0; bulges=[]; ripples=[]; deathAt=0; deadMark=null; stampShown=false; newBestFlag=false; food=null; placeFood(); setState('ready'); updateHUD(); } function setState(s){ state=s; veilStart.classList.toggle('show', s==='ready'); veilPause.classList.toggle('show', s==='paused'); if(s!=='dead') veilDead.classList.remove('show'); } function start(d){ const h=cells[0]; prev=cells.map(c=>({x:c.x,y:c.y})); cells=[{x:h.x,y:h.y},{x:h.x-d.x,y:h.y-d.y},{x:h.x-2*d.x,y:h.y-2*d.y}]; dir=d; queue=[]; acc=0; setState('running'); blip(300,540,.09,'triangle',.5); } ``` Edge: start near wall? head at center always ✓ (restart always resets to center). pause/resume: ```js function pauseGame(){ if(state!=='running')return; setState('paused'); blip(420,240,.12,'triangle',.4); } function resumeGame(){ if(state!=='paused')return; setState('running'); blip(240,420,.12,'triangle',.4); } ``` toReady: reset() (keeps best) — reset sets state ready ✓. placeFood: ```js function placeFood(){ const occ=new Set(cells.map(c=>c.x+','+c.y)); const free=[]; for(let y=0;yMath.abs(c.x-h.x)+Math.abs(c.y-h.y)>3); const pool=far.length?far:free; food=pool[(Math.random()*pool.length)|0]; } ``` tick: ```js function tick(){ tickCount++; while(queue.length){ const d=queue.shift(); if(d.x!==-dir.x || d.y!==-dir.y){ if(d.x!==dir.x||d.y!==dir.y){ dir=d; } break; } } ``` Hmm logic: shift d; if it's reverse → discard and try next (continue loop); if it's same as current → discard? Applying same dir harmless but wastes a queued turn; just apply (break) — but then a subsequent queued turn waits another tick, adding latency. Better: skip same-direction entries too. Rewrite: ```js while(queue.length){ const d=queue.shift(); if(d.x===-dir.x && d.y===-dir.y) continue; // reverse: discard if(d.x===dir.x && d.y===dir.y) continue; // same: skip dir=d; break; } ``` ✓ ```js prev=cells.map(c=>({x:c.x,y:c.y})); const h={x:cells[0].x+dir.x, y:cells[0].y+dir.y}; const grow = food && h.x===food.x && h.y===food.y; let mark=null; if(h.x<0||h.y<0||h.x>=COLS||h.y>=ROWS){ mark={x:Math.min(COLS-1,Math.max(0,h.x)), y:Math.min(ROWS-1,Math.max(0,h.y))}; } else { const lim=grow?cells.length:cells.length-1; for(let i=0;ibest){ best=score; newBestFlag=true; localStorage.setItem('ink-snake-best',String(best)); } updateHUD(); setState('dead'); wrap.classList.remove('shake'); void wrap.offsetWidth; wrap.classList.add('shake'); blip(190,50,.5,'sawtooth',.45); blip(150,42,.6,'triangle',.5); deadTitle.textContent='GAME OVER'; deadLine.textContent=`SCORE ${pad3(score)} — BEST ${pad3(best)}`; newBestEl.hidden=!newBestFlag; } ``` winGame similar with 'PERFECTION' / line 'THE GARDEN IS FULL — SCORE ...'; treat like dead but no shake? Add stamp + sound: reuse die-ish. I'll write separate: ```js function winGame(){ // note: called from placeFood during eat; food null if(score>best){...} deadTitle.textContent='PERFECTION'; deadLine.textContent=`THE GARDEN IS FULL — ${pad3(score)}`; state='win'; show veilDead after delay like dead. } ``` Hmm win happens while state==='running' inside tick — setState not needed; I'll set state='win', deathAt=now, stampShown=false. The frame's t: state 'win' → t=1; snake full board covering everything — the veil covers. ok. Also 'win' should not restart via same handlers? treat like dead in input handlers: check state==='dead'||state==='win'. Fine — I'll alias isOver=()=>state==='dead'||state==='win'. Actually simpler: in winGame set state='dead' too but title different; no shake, no death sound, play a little fanfare (3 rising blips). But deadMark null and deathAt set → snake grays out — for win graying is odd but whatever, rare easter egg. Use state='dead', skip shake & death sound, fanfare instead. Good simplification. But the gray X eyes on win — funny actually ("full"). fine. updateHUD: ```js function updateHUD(){ scoreEl.textContent=pad3(score); bestEl.textContent=pad3(best); } function popEl(el){ el.classList.remove('pop'); void el.offsetWidth; el.classList.add('pop'); } ``` Input: ```js const DIRS={ArrowUp:{x:0,y:-1},KeyW:{x:0,y:-1},ArrowDown:{x:0,y:1},KeyS:{x:0,y:1},ArrowLeft:{x:-1,y:0},KeyA:{x:-1,y:0},ArrowRight:{x:1,y:0},KeyD:{x:1,y:0}}; window.addEventListener('keydown', e=>{ if(e.repeat && !DIRS[e.code]) return; const isDir=!!DIRS[e.code]; if(isDir || e.code==='Space') e.preventDefault(); ensureAudio(); if(e.code==='KeyM'){ toggleMute(); return; } if(e.code==='Space'){ if(state==='running') pauseGame(); else if(state==='paused') resumeGame(); else if(state==='ready') start({x:1,y:0}); else if(state==='dead' && performance.now()-deathAt>600) reset(); return; } const d=DIRS[e.code]; if(!d) return; if(state==='ready') start(d); else if(state==='running') pushDir(d); else if(state==='paused'){ resumeGame(); pushDir(d); } else if(state==='dead' && performance.now()-deathAt>600){ reset(); start(d); } }); function pushDir(d){ const lastD=queue.length?queue[queue.length-1]:dir; if(d.x===lastD.x&&d.y===lastD.y) return; if(d.x===-lastD.x&&d.y===-lastD.y) return; if(queue.length<3) queue.push(d); } ``` Note: reset(); start(d) — reset sets ready then start begins; fine. start plays blip; also die's sounds done earlier. OK. Touch: ```js let tsx=0,tsy=0,tst=0; stage.addEventListener('touchstart',e=>{ ensureAudio(); const t=e.changedTouches[0]; tsx=t.clientX; tsy=t.clientY; tst=performance.now(); },{passive:true}); stage.addEventListener('touchmove',e=>{ e.preventDefault(); },{passive:false}); stage.addEventListener('touchend',e=>{ const t=e.changedTouches[0]; const dx=t.clientX-tsx, dy=t.clientY-tsy; const adx=Math.abs(dx), ady=Math.abs(dy); const now=performance.now(); if(Math.max(adx,ady)>22){ const d=adx>ady?{x:Math.sign(dx),y:0}:{x:0,y:Math.sign(dy)}; handleDirInput(d); } else if(now-tst<400){ // tap if(state==='ready') start({x:1,y:0}); else if(state==='paused') resumeGame(); else if(state==='dead'&&now-deathAt>600) reset(); } },{passive:true}); function handleDirInput(d){ if(state==='ready') start(d); else if(state==='running') pushDir(d); else if(state==='paused'){ resumeGame(); pushDir(d); } else if(state==='dead'&&performance.now()-deathAt>600){ reset(); start(d); } } ``` touchmove preventDefault on stage prevents scroll; but body overflow hidden anyway; keep for safety. Note: touchend also fires click? preventDefault not called on touchend, a synthetic click may fire on wrap — I won't add click handlers to avoid double (tap handled in touchend; desktop uses click? Desktop users click rarely; add wrap click for dead→reset & ready→start for mouse users? Mouse click on canvas: nice to support. But click fires after touchend too → double handling: tap → touchend starts game; click then fires: state==='running' → my click handler would... if click handler does `if ready start / if dead reset` — after touchend started game, click sees running → no-op ✓. If tap was on dead → touchend resets to ready; click then fires sees ready → start(right) — unintended auto-start! Prevent: in touchend call e.preventDefault() to suppress synthetic click. preventDefault on touchend (passive:true — need passive:false to preventDefault). Set {passive:false} and call preventDefault. Then also add click handler for mouse. OK. ```js wrap.addEventListener('click',()=>{ ensureAudio(); if(state==='ready') start({x:1,y:0}); else if(state==='paused') resumeGame(); else if(state==='dead'&&performance.now()-deathAt>600) reset(); }); ``` Mute: ```js let muted=localStorage.getItem('ink-snake-muted')==='1'; function applyMuteUI(){ muteBtn.classList.toggle('muted',muted); muteLbl.textContent=muted?'SOUND OFF':'SOUND ON'; } function toggleMute(){ muted=!muted; localStorage.setItem('ink-snake-muted',muted?'1':'0'); applyMuteUI(); if(!muted){ensureAudio(); blip(500,700,.08,'triangle',.5);} } muteBtn.addEventListener('click',e=>{ e.stopPropagation(); ensureAudio(); toggleMute(); }); ``` muteBtn click also bubbles to wrap? Button is in footer, outside wrap ✓ no stopPropagation needed but harmless. visibilitychange: ```js document.addEventListener('visibilitychange',()=>{ if(document.hidden&&state==='running') pauseGame(); }); ``` Audio: ```js let actx=null, master=null; function ensureAudio(){ if(!actx){ try{ const AC=window.AudioContext||window.webkitAudioContext; actx=new AC(); master=actx.createGain(); master.gain.value=.16; master.connect(actx.destination);}catch(err){} } if(actx&&actx.state==='suspended') actx.resume(); } function blip(f0,f1,dur,type,vol){ if(!actx||muted) return; try{ const t0=actx.currentTime; const o=actx.createOscillator(), g=actx.createGain(); o.type=type; o.frequency.setValueAtTime(f0,t0); o.frequency.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(Math.max(20,f1),t0+dur); g.gain.setValueAtTime(.0001,t0); g.gain.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(vol,t0+.014); g.gain.exponentialRampToValueAtTime(.0001,t0+dur); o.connect(g); g.connect(master); o.start(t0); o.stop(t0+dur+.05); }catch(err){} } ``` Frame loop: ```js function frame(now){ requestAnimationFrame(frame); const dt=Math.min(80, now-last); last=now; if(state==='running'){ acc+=dt; let guard=0; while(acc>=tickMs && state==='running' && guard++<4){ tick(); acc-=tickMs; } if(state!=='running') acc=0; } draw(now); // stamp timing if(state==='dead' && !stampShown && now-deathAt>550){ stampShown=true; veilDead.classList.add('show'); } // dot pulse dot.style.transform=`scale(${(1+.12*Math.max(0,Math.sin(now/260))).toFixed(3)})`; } ``` Wait guard<4 with tickMs possibly small: at 68ms ticks and 60fps (16.7ms frames) max ~1 tick/frame; guard for tab-return: dt capped 80 → max 2 ticks. guard 4 fine. Draw: ```js function draw(now){ const t=(state==='running'||state==='paused')?Math.min(1,acc/tickMs):1; ctx.clearRect(0,0,sizePx,sizePx); ctx.fillStyle=C.paperHi; ctx.fillRect(0,0,sizePx,sizePx); // grid ctx.lineWidth=1; for(let i=1;i{ const a=(now-rp.t0)/480; if(a>=1) return false; ctx.strokeStyle=`rgba(216,68,43,${(1-a)*.55})`; ctx.lineWidth=2.5*(1-a)+.5; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc((rp.x+.5)*cell,(rp.y+.5)*cell, cell*(.3+a*2.1),0,6.2832); ctx.stroke(); return true; }); ``` Dead mark: ```js if(deadMark){ const a=(now-deathAt)/700; if(a<1){ const mx=(deadMark.x+.5)*cell,my=(deadMark.y+.5)*cell,s=cell*.24; ctx.strokeStyle=`rgba(216,68,43,${(1-a)})`; ctx.lineWidth=3; ctx.lineCap='round'; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.moveTo(mx-s,my-s); ctx.lineTo(mx+s,my+s); ctx.moveTo(mx-s,my+s); ctx.lineTo(mx+s,my-s); ctx.stroke(); } } ``` Keep deadMark (don't null) so X persists faded out (alpha 0 anyway) — but on restart reset clears it ✓. If a≥1 alpha negative → rgba invalid! Clamp: a<1 guard else skip drawing but keep variable — skip draw ✓ (alpha not emitted). Actually (1-a) negative → rgba(...,-0.2) invalid → canvas ignores that strokeStyle assignment (keeps previous) → X drawn fully opaque! Bug. Guard with if(a<1) around the whole block ✓ as written (draw only inside). ✓ Snake draw as designed. Also handle n≥1; if cells length... always ≥3. Full snake code: ```js const n=cells.length; const pts=new Array(n); for(let i=0;i{ let u=Math.min(1,Math.max(0,s/taperLen)); u=u*u*(3-2*u); let w=headW+(tailW-headW)*u; for(let j=0;j110?1:(n>48?2:3); const samples=[]; for(let i=0;i1){ const dx=head.x-pts[1].x, dy=head.y-pts[1].y, m=Math.hypot(dx,dy); if(m>.001){ vx=dx/m; vy=dy/m; } } const hr=Math.max(2,widthAt(0)*.62); // tongue if(!k && food){ const dh=Math.hypot(food.x-cells[0].x, food.y-cells[0].y); const ph=now%1500; if(dh<4.5 && ph<240){ const ext=Math.sin(ph/240*Math.PI); const bx=head.x+vx*hr*.85, by=head.y+vy*hr*.85; const tx=head.x+vx*(hr+cell*.4*ext), ty=head.y+vy*(hr+cell*.4*ext); ctx.strokeStyle=C.red; ctx.lineWidth=Math.max(1,cell*.07); ctx.lineCap='round'; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.moveTo(bx,by); ctx.lineTo(tx,ty); // fork const fl=cell*.13*ext; const ang=Math.atan2(vy,vx); ctx.moveTo(tx,ty); ctx.lineTo(tx+Math.cos(ang-.5)*fl, ty+Math.sin(ang-.5)*fl); ctx.moveTo(tx,ty); ctx.lineTo(tx+Math.cos(ang+.5)*fl, ty+Math.sin(ang+.5)*fl); ctx.stroke(); } } // head ctx.fillStyle=ink; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(head.x,head.y,hr,0,6.2832); ctx.fill(); // eyes const px2=-vy, py2=vx; const ex0=head.x+vx*hr*.28, ey0=head.y+vy*hr*.28; const eo=hr*.46, er=Math.max(1,hr*.17); for(const sgn of [-1,1]){ const exx=ex0+px2*eo*sgn, eyy=ey0+py2*eo*sgn; if(k>.5){ ctx.strokeStyle=C.hi; ctx.lineWidth=Math.max(1,cell*.05); const e=hr*.17; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.moveTo(exx-e,eyy-e); ctx.lineTo(exx+e,eyy+e); ctx.moveTo(exx-e,eyy+e); ctx.lineTo(exx+e,eyy-e); ctx.stroke(); }else{ ctx.fillStyle=C.hi; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.arc(exx,eyy,er,0,6.2832); ctx.fill(); } } ``` Tongue condition `!k` — k is 0 unless dead ✓ (win state sets dead too). Eyes while dead with gray head: x-eyes in paper color visible ✓. Note: dead head slightly shrunk (shrink) ✓. Bulge cleanup: bulges=bulges.filter(b=> (tickCount-b.born)+t < n+2 ) inside draw or tick. Do in draw: ```js bulges=bulges.filter(b=>(tickCount-b.born)+t{last=ts; requestAnimationFrame(frame)}); ``` Simpler: last=performance.now(); requestAnimationFrame(frame); first dt clamps. fit before reset? order fine either; but reset→placeFood needs cells ✓ independent of canvas. Fonts load shifting layout: fit() depends on stage size which depends on masthead height (font load). Add: document.fonts.ready.then(fit). ✓ One more: `overflow:hidden` on body could clip on very short screens... masthead+board min — stage min-height 140; total ~ ok for ≥ 480px heights. Acceptable. Double-check the tick dir application when queue has valid dir: after `dir=d; break;`. ✓ Check interpolation prev length after eat: prev had n, cells has n+1; prevAt(i) for i=n → prev[n-1] = old tail ✓ tail vertex holds while everything slides — correct growth visual. After start(): prev length 3 = cells length 3 ✓. After reset: prev==cells ✓. Now verify the reversal guard in pushDir vs queue tail ✓. Potential visual glitch: the swing at start() — cells[0] head stays at same board cell (h unchanged) so head doesn't move; body lerps from horizontal to behind-head direction ✓ snake "whips" into new orientation then first tick moves forward. During that first tickInterval (150ms), head stationary but t advances; head lerp from prev[0]→cells[0] both same point ✓ stationary head with body swinging — like the snake turning in place. Good. But wait: dir set at start; first tick happens after acc≥150ms; head then moves. Total reaction fine. Also ready-state tongue: uses cells[0] & food — food placed at reset ≥3 manhattan away; tongue flicks when close — at ready dist>3 → mostly no flick; fine. Now the veil for start has .show initially in HTML — setState('ready') in reset also toggles it ✓ (reset called at init). Stamp: veilDead show only via stampShown timing (not in setState since dead needs delay). In setState I remove show for non-dead ✓. For win (state='dead' after my simplification) same path ✓. Hold on — winGame: I said simplify: set deadTitle etc, play fanfare, set state='dead', deathAt=now, stampShown=false. But also die() sets shake — don't shake for win ✓ separate function. ```js function winGame(){ if(score>best){ best=score; newBestFlag=true; localStorage.setItem('ink-snake-best',String(best)); } updateHUD(); deadMark=null; deathAt=performance.now(); stampShown=false; deadTitle.textContent='PERFECTION'; deadLine.textContent=`THE GARDEN IS FULL — SCORE ${pad3(score)}`; newBestEl.hidden=!newBestFlag; state='dead'; blip(523,523,.12,'triangle',.5); blip(659,659,.12,'triangle',.5) w/ delay? my blip has no delay param — add delay param optional. ``` Add delay: blip(f0,f1,dur,type,vol,delay=0) with t0=actx.currentTime+delay. Then fanfare: 3 blips delays 0,.12,.24 freqs 523,659,784. ✓ Also deadMark cleared so no X ✓. updateHUD in win: score already counted ✓. die() vs winGame both add stamp at delay ✓ shared frame check. Now HTML/CSS final assembly + noise data URI encode: data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' width='180' height='180'%3E%3Cfilter id='n'%3E%3CfeTurbulence type='fractalNoise' baseFrequency='0.8' numOctaves='2' stitchTiles='stitch'/%3E%3CfeColorMatrix type='saturate' values='0'/%3E%3C/filter%3E%3Crect width='180' height='180' filter='url(%23n)'/%3E%3C/svg%3E CSS url with double quotes around the single-quote-containing string ✓. Speaker SVG: ```html ``` CSS: #muteBtn .off{display:none} #muteBtn.muted .off{display:initial} etc. But `.off` is a g with paths — display on g works. Also `.on` class hide when muted ✓. kbd arrows: "← ↑ → ↓" text with spaces. Footer legend separators: use `·`? I'll just put middots inline in spans. Simplify: legend items with gap. Let me also consider masthead on very narrow: ledger wraps under title — fine. Caption "Fig. 1 — the garden · 21 × 21 cells · walls are fatal" uppercase via CSS. One more polish: hovering the board? no hover needed. Also add `document.title` set in head ✓. Preventing arrow-key page scroll: preventDefault ✓ (page overflow hidden anyway). Also handle `e.repeat` for space: holding space would pause/resume rapidly — guard: if(e.repeat && e.code==='Space') return. Add at top: if(e.repeat && (e.code==='Space'||e.code==='KeyM')) return; dirs repeat fine (pushDir dedupes). Wait — e.repeat with dir keys: pushDir dedupes same-dir ✓ good. I think the design is solid. Also check "no default blue/purple" ✓ (paper/ink/vermillion). No gradients ✓ (flat colors; the veil washes are flat rgba). No emoji ✓. Fonts distinctive ✓. Everything wired ✓. Signature moments: ink-stroke snake with traveling swallow bulge, tongue flick, dead X-eyes, rubber-stamp game over, title-dot synced pulse. Let me also double check the .dot pop animation vs JS transform conflict: popEl(dot) adds .pop class animating transform → conflicts with inline style transform set every frame (inline overrides animation? Inline style has higher priority than CSS animations? Actually CSS animations override inline styles during animation (animations beat inline in cascade for animated properties). During .pop animation, transform keyframes apply; after, inline resumes ✓. Keyframe pop sets scale(1.3) at 40% overriding pulse briefly — fine visually. But the dot is inside h1 italic; transform-origin 50% 78% good. Now, HUD initial: best from storage shown ✓. Write deadLine textContent with em dash ✓. Also when dead, pressing arrow does reset()+start(d) — start uses cells freshly reset (horizontal 3 at center) and rebuilds ✓. I should double check `setState` for 'dead' doesn't touch veilDead ✓ (only removes for others). In die, veilDead show happens later via stampShown ✓. Edge: after die, if user presses Space quickly (<600ms) — ignored ✓. Pause veil background .68 — during pause board dimmed ✓. touchmove preventDefault — attach to wrap or stage; stage includes outside-board area; fine. Also add `wrap.addEventListener('touchend', e=>e.preventDefault(), {passive:false})`? I attach touchend on stage with passive:false and preventDefault inside when handled. Let me just always preventDefault in stage touchend to suppress double-tap zoom/click. But that also prevents... nothing else needed. However preventDefault on touchend of a swipe that started as scroll? overflow hidden anyway. OK always preventDefault there. Hmm careful: muteBtn is in footer, outside stage ✓ unaffected. Also iOS Safari 100dvh ok; fallback 100vh: use height:100vh then height:100dvh (cascade). Let me also set html,body overscroll-behavior:none. Time to write the final file. I'll aim for clean, commented code. Comments in English (user wrote English). Also the explanation after the code: brief — concept, controls, features. Double-check grid drawing loop: `for(let i=1;i Compose: %3Csvg xmlns='...' viewBox='0 0 64 64'%3E%3Crect width='64' height='64' fill='%23F7F2E7'/%3E%3Ccircle cx='32' cy='32' r='14' fill='%23D8442B'/%3E%3C/svg%3E ✓. Now write the final answer. Brief intro sentence, then the code block, then explanation. Keep explanation concise with a few bullets. Let me write out the complete HTML now, mentally compiling for errors. Also — `.stat .num` needs display inline-block for pop transform ✓ set. The ledger `text-align:right` — labels above numbers aligned right ✓. `.masthead > div:first-child` contains h1+tagline. Check footer legend markup: ```html ← ↑ → ↓move · Spacepause · Msound ``` .sep{opacity:.5; margin:0 2px} Write JS with all pieces in one IIFE. Also 'use strict'. Also: on `keydown` I call ensureAudio() — creating AudioContext on keydown gesture ✓ allowed. One more: the `dot` pulse runs even when tab hidden (rAF paused) fine. Also fit(): stage.clientHeight — stage is flex:1 within .sheet (height 100dvh) → measured after layout. Call fit() on load + fonts.ready + resize + also ResizeObserver on stage for robustness: ```js if(window.ResizeObserver){ new ResizeObserver(fit).observe(stage); } ``` Careful: fit() sets wrap size inside stage — doesn't change stage size (stage fixed by flex) → no infinite loop ✓. Initial: call fit() immediately at script end (DOM parsed since script at body end) ✓ then fonts.ready again. Edge: `.stage` min-height:140px. Also add cursor:pointer on wrap? Only meaningful for click-to-start; add cursor:pointer always? Meh — set cursor:pointer on veilStart only... it's pointer-events none. Skip. Final check of keyframes names uniqueness ✓. Potential CSS pitfall: `h1 .dot` inline-block inside italic text — baseline shift? inline-block with transform fine. Also: `.num.pop` animation both score and dot share keyframes pop ✓. I think we're ready. Also I will NOT mention the system/iframe stuff. Brief natural intro like "Here's my take on Snake — I went with an ink-on-graph-paper look..." then code, then explanation of features/controls. Let me now write out the entire final code block carefully. Actually one more mechanical detail: in `tick`, when applying queued direction I `continue` for same/reverse; note `dir` at that point is the direction used last tick. ✓. And pushDir cap 3 ✓. Sub-note: `start()` doesn't clear ripples/bulges — bulges cleared in reset ✓; start only from ready (post-reset) ✓ or after dead→reset→start ✓. Also update `deadLine` for win uses different copy ✓. Also for veilDead `.stamp-hint` for win would say same hint — fine. Writing final HTML: Also remember meta viewport, lang="en". Let me count the CSS for `.cm` corners: ```css .cm{position:absolute;width:12px;height:12px;opacity:.5;pointer-events:none} .cm.tl{top:-13px;left:-13px;border-top:2px solid var(--ink);border-left:2px solid var(--ink)} .cm.tr{top:-13px;right:-13px;border-top:2px solid var(--ink);border-right:2px solid var(--ink)} .cm.bl{bottom:-13px;left:-13px;border-bottom:2px solid var(--ink);border-left:2px solid var(--ink)} .cm.br{bottom:-13px;right:-13px;border-bottom:2px solid var(--ink);border-right:2px solid var(--ink)} ``` 2px might be heavy; use 1.5px. But `i` elements default italic — irrelevant (empty). Set font-style normal? Empty, fine. Hmm the bottom-right crop marks + box-shadow offset 10px — shadow extends 10px right/down; marks at -13 outside → visible against paper ✓. Wait — crop marks outside wrap but inside stage; stage padding 16px top — marks fit ✓. Now, is the "shake" class animation conflicting with nothing else on wrap ✓ (no base transform). Also I set `will-change: transform` on dot — fine. Everything set; produce final answer. I'll write code with modest comments. Length ~450 lines. One more thought about the noise z-index 60 vs mute button z-index — noise is pointer-events none; visually grain over button ok (paper). Also body font smoothing ✓. Check: `#muteBtn` font shorthand `font:700 9.5px/1 'Space Mono',monospace;` include line-height. In draw, remember ctx state lineJoin set each snake draw; grid sets lineWidth 1 each frame ✓. Alright — also the initial veil shows "Ready when you are." + blink + fine lines. On mobile the "Press any arrow — or swipe" wording ✓. Write it. Here's my take on Snake — I didn't want to ship yet another neon-on-black version, so I went for an "ink on graph paper" direction: the snake is a single continuous ink stroke that glides smoothly between cells (no blocky jumps), swallows travel down its body as a bulge, it flicks its tongue when fruit is near, and dying gets you X-ed out eyes and a red rubber-stamp **GAME OVER** slammed onto the sheet. ```html Snake — a game of appetite

Ready when you are.

Press any arrow — or swipe — to begin

Eat the fruit · avoid the walls · avoid yourself

Catching breath.

Space to resume

GAME OVER

SCORE 000 — BEST 000

Space or any arrow to go again

Fig. 1 — the garden · 21 × 21 cells · walls are fatal

``` **How it works, briefly:** - **The snake is a stroke, not blocks.** Logic runs on a classic tick (grid cells), but rendering interpolates every segment between its previous and current cell, then draws the spine as a variable-width round-capped stroke — wide at the head, tapering to the tail. It genuinely *flows*. - **Signature details:** each fruit you eat becomes a bulge that visibly travels down the body; the snake flicks a forked red tongue when within ~4 cells of food; the red period in the title pulses in sync with the fruit; on death the ink grays out, the board shakes, a red X marks the crash site, the eyes turn into little X-es, and a rubber-stamp GAME OVER slams onto the sheet. - **Feel:** speed ramps gently with each fruit (150ms → 68ms per tick), a 3-move input buffer makes sharp double-turns reliable, and 180° reversals are blocked. - **Controls:** Arrows/WASD to move, Space to start/pause, M to mute; on touch, swipe steers and tap starts/resumes. Best score persists via `localStorage`. - **Sound:** tiny synthesized WebAudio blips (eat pitch climbs with your score) — no assets, no network calls; everything runs offline in one file. Fill the entire 21×21 garden and you'll get a very rare "PERFECTION" stamp.
Guys, write code for the game "snake"
