We need to write a function has_close_elements(numbers: List[float], threshold: float) -> bool that checks if any two numbers in the list are closer to each other than the given threshold (i.e., absolute difference less than threshold). This is a classic problem: given a list of numbers, check if there exist i != j such that |numbers[i] - numbers[j]| < threshold. Given the typical naive solution is O(n^2) check each pair; but we can do better by sorting: sort numbers, then check adjacent differences. Since after sorting, any two numbers with minimal difference will be adjacent (or at least the minimal difference among all pairs is achieved by some adjacent pair in sorted order). So we can sort O(n log n) then check for any difference less than threshold. But we must be careful: threshold can be negative? Typically threshold is a positive number (distance). However we should not assume; but to be safe we can treat absolute difference < threshold. If threshold is negative, then absolute difference < negative will never be true. But we can still implement correctly. Implementation steps: - If numbers is empty or length less than 2, return False. - Sort numbers. - Loop through sorted list from i=0 to len-2: if sorted[i+1] - sorted[i] < threshold: return True - Return False. Edge Cases: - duplicates: If same number appears, difference = 0 < threshold (if threshold > 0). Should detect. - Large numbers. - Floating point precision: comparing difference < threshold is fine. Testing with given examples: Example1: [1.0,2.0,3.0], threshold 0.5. Sorted: [1.0,2.0,3.0], differences: 1.0,1.0; both >=0.5 => False. Example2: [1.0,2.8,3.0,4.0,5.0,2.0], threshold 0.3. Sorted: [1.0,2.0,2.8,3.0,4.0,5.0]; differences: 1.0 (2-1), 0.8 (2.8-2), 0.2 (3-2.8) -> 0.2 < 0.3 => True. Works. Time complexity O(n log n). Could also be O(n) using bucket sort if numbers range is bounded. But simple solution is fine. Now need to implement in Python. Ensure typing import List. Potential improvements: use any built-in; maybe use min(diff for diff in differences) but early break. We'll produce final answer with docstring and examples. We also need to consider that threshold is exclusive: they want closer than threshold (strictly less). So use < threshold. Potential issue: for threshold being zero, we can consider difference < 0 never true, but duplicates with difference exactly 0 are not less than zero. However if threshold is zero, we probably want to check for duplicates; but typical interpretation is "closer than threshold" meaning strictly less. So with threshold zero, return False for any list, but duplicates with zero difference will not be considered. That may be fine. If they want <= they could adjust. But typical definition for "closer than threshold" is strict less. The test expects True for duplicates if threshold >0 but not if threshold=0. So fine. Now final code: ```python from typing import List def has_close_elements(numbers: List[float], threshold: float) -> bool: """Check if any two numbers in the list are closer to each other than the given threshold. The check is performed using the absolute difference between any two distinct numbers. The function returns True if there exists a pair (i, j) with i != j such that |numbers[i] - numbers[j]| < threshold, otherwise False. The implementation runs in O(n log n) time by sorting the list and then checking only adjacent elements; the smallest absolute difference in a sorted list always occurs between two consecutive elements. Parameters ---------- numbers : List[float] A list of floating point numbers. threshold : float A non‑negative distance threshold. Returns ------- bool True if a pair of numbers with distance less than ``threshold`` exists, otherwise False. Examples -------- >>> has_close_elements([1.0, 2.0, 3.0], 0.5) False >>> has_close_elements([1.0, 2.8, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 2.0], 0.3) True """ # Need at least two numbers to form a pair if len(numbers) < 2: return False # Sort the list; the closest pair will be neighbours after sorting sorted_numbers = sorted(numbers) # Check adjacent differences for a, b in zip(sorted_numbers, sorted_numbers[1:]): if b - a < threshold: return True return False ``` But we need to note that for negative threshold, the condition will never be satisfied, returning False. Alternatively we could use absolute difference: but because sorted ensures a <= b, we can just compute b - a (positive). That's correct. Now check with examples. We can also add tests. Now deliver final answer. **Solution Explanation** For two numbers `x` and `y` we need to know whether the distance `|x‑y|` is *strictly smaller* than a given `threshold`. If the list contains at least two elements we can check all pairs, but that would be **O(n²)**. A much faster way is to **sort** the list first: * After sorting, the smallest distance between any two numbers is always found between two *adjacent* elements. *Proof sketch:* if the smallest distance involved two non‑adjacent numbers, the element between them would be even closer to one of them, contradicting the minimality. ∎ Therefore we only have to look at the `n‑1` consecutive differences after sorting. **Algorithm** 1. If the list has fewer than two numbers → `False`. 2. Sort the list. 3. Scan the sorted list once, computing `b‑a` for each adjacent pair. If any difference is `< threshold` → `True`. 4. No such pair found → `False`. **Correctness Proof** We prove that the algorithm returns `True` iff there exist two distinct indices `i, j` with `|numbers[i] - numbers[j]| < threshold`. *Lemma 1* Let `S` be a sorted version of the input list. For any indices `p < q` in `S`, `S[q] - S[p]` is at least the minimum of `S[k+1] - S[k]` for all `k` with `p ≤ k < q`. *Proof.* Because the list is sorted, `S[p] ≤ S[p+1] ≤ … ≤ S[q]`. Consequently the total distance `S[q] - S[p]` is the sum of all consecutive differences between `p` and `q`: `S[q] - S[p] = Σ_{k=p}^{q-1} (S[k+1] - S[k])`. Since each term in the sum is non‑negative, the sum is ≥ any individual term. ∎ *Lemma 2* If there exists any pair of numbers with distance `< threshold`, then there exists an adjacent pair in the sorted list whose distance is also `< threshold`. *Proof.* Let `(i, j)` be a pair with `i < j` and `|numbers[i] - numbers[j]| < threshold`. After sorting, the same two values become some `S[p]` and `S[q]` with `p < q` and `S[q] - S[p] < threshold`. By Lemma 1, `S[q] - S[p] ≥ min_{p ≤ k < q} (S[k+1] - S[k])`. Therefore at least one adjacent difference in the interval `[p, q]` must also be `< threshold`. ∎ *Theorem* The algorithm returns `True` iff the input list contains two numbers with distance `< threshold`. *Proof.* *If* the algorithm returns `True`, it found an adjacent pair `S[k], S[k+1]` with `S[k+1] - S[k] < threshold`. This pair corresponds to two distinct elements of the original list whose distance is `< threshold`, so the condition holds. *Only‑if*: Suppose the original list has a pair with distance `< threshold`. By Lemma 2 there is an adjacent pair in the sorted list with distance `< threshold`. The algorithm examines every adjacent pair, so it will detect this pair and return `True`. Thus the algorithm is correct. ∎ **Complexity Analysis** * Sorting: `O(n log n)` * Linear scan of adjacent pairs: `O(n)` * Total time: `O(n log n)` (worst and average case) * Extra space: `O(n)` for the sorted copy (or `O(1)` if sorting in‑place) **Reference Implementation (Python 3)** ```python from typing import List def has_close_elements(numbers: List[float], threshold: float) -> bool: """Return True iff there exist two distinct numbers in *numbers* whose absolute difference is strictly smaller than *threshold*. The algorithm sorts the list and then checks only adjacent elements, because the minimal distance in a sorted list always occurs between neighbours. Parameters ---------- numbers : List[float] List of floating‑point numbers. threshold : float Non‑negative distance threshold. Returns ------- bool True if a close pair exists, otherwise False. Examples -------- >>> has_close_elements([1.0, 2.0, 3.0], 0.5) False >>> has_close_elements([1.0, 2.8, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 2.0], 0.3) True """ # Need at least two numbers to form a pair if len(numbers) < 2: return False # Sort the numbers; the closest pair will be neighbours sorted_numbers = sorted(numbers) # Examine each consecutive pair for a, b in zip(sorted_numbers, sorted_numbers[1:]): if b - a < threshold: # a <= b because of sorting return True # No pair satisfied the condition return False ``` The function follows exactly the algorithm proven correct above and conforms to the required signature and docstring format.
