Prompt

I run a small private web app for my family's NFL pick'em league, and I'd like your honest, unconstrained ideas for improving it. Assume nothing is off-limits: features, game rules, design, technology, how it's run. I'll weigh the tradeoffs afterwards; your job is to show me what's possible and what you think is most worth doing. THE LEAGUE - 9 family members (8 founders plus one who joined in Week 6), mixed ages and comfort with technology. Most use it on their phones. - It replaced a paper notebook one family member kept for years. That person still keeps paper records by hand and likes doing so. - Bragging rights only: no money involved. - The family already has a group text, which is where most trash talk and results-sharing happen. WHO RUNS IT - I'm the only operator and the league commissioner, and I also play. I'm not a programmer. I direct AI coding agents that write the code, and I review, merge and release. - Hosting is on free or near-free tiers. Every change to the main branch deploys straight to the live site. - My time and the risk of breaking things during the season both matter. A great idea that takes weeks of my attention mid-season is worth less than a good one that's small and safe. THE TWO CONTESTS - Classic: pick the winner of every NFL game each week (no spread). Ranked by win-loss record (win percentage). A missed pick counts as a loss; a tie or a cancelled ("voided") game is removed from everyone's record. Each week has a "weekly winner" (best record that week; ties share the crown). - Eliminator: pick one team per week, and you can never use the same team twice all season. A win extends your streak; a loss, a tie or a missed week resets it to zero. Longest streak of the season wins, then total wins, then co-champions. A cancelled game returns your team and doesn't affect your streak. - Each game locks at its own kickoff. Before lock, everyone can see who has picked a game but not what they picked. From lock onward, all picks on that game are visible to everyone, permanently. WHAT EXISTS TODAY (launched September 9, 2026) - Sign-in by emailed one-time code. Only people on the roster can see anything. - Week page: every game with kickoff time in the viewer's local time, tap to pick (with "Saving… / Saved" feedback), a line showing who has picked so far, a countdown to the next lock, and your Classic record for the week so far. After lock, each game shows everyone's picks; labels like "Lone wolf: <name>" (one person alone on a side) or "All picks on <team>". Plain result lines for ties, voids and missed picks. - Eliminator module on the week page and a season Eliminator board: each player's week-by-week picks and results, current and best streak, ranking, and which teams each player has left. - Standings: season Classic standings with recent form and a crown count (weekly wins), plus a view of any single week's records. - Home page: a spotlight on last week's weekly winner and how you did. - Player profiles: season results, week-by-week records, Eliminator history. - "Banners" page: past champions by year, entered by hand. - Commissioner tools: emergency pick entry for someone locked out, voiding a game, correcting a kickoff time, rulings, and a copyable weekly recap for the group text. - Automatic reminder emails before picks lock, for people with picks still missing. - On-screen notices when a game you picked is rescheduled or a pick of yours had to be cleared. - An icon for the phone's home screen. Schedules and scores come in automatically from public NFL data feeds. Weekly database backups. KNOWN LIMITATIONS AND FACTS THAT AFFECT FEASIBILITY - Point spreads are available in the data feed but get overwritten on each update; nothing saves the spread as it stood at kickoff. - There is no in-app chat, no money, and no injury or news feed. The app sends email only for reminders. - Adding a mid-season player currently requires a hand edit to the database. - Score updates arrive on a polling schedule, not instantly. WHAT I'D LIKE FROM YOU 1. Enhancements: up to 12 ideas, ranked by how much you think they'd improve the league's experience. Cover a range: game-rule changes, social and fun features, things for the less tech-comfortable players, things for the commissioner, things for next season (2027). Include at least two ideas that are bold or unconventional. 2. Optimizations: up to 5 ideas for making the app easier or safer to run, more reliable, or less work for me. You can't see the code, so stick to what you can reasonably judge from the description above. 3. Removals: anything you'd cut, simplify or stop doing, and why. For each idea, give: - Name and a two- or three-sentence description of what a player (or I) would actually see or do. - Why it's worth it for this specific family league, not pick'em apps in general. - Effort: Small (hours), Medium (a few days), or Large (weeks), for an AI coding agent directed by a non-programmer. - Risk: what could go wrong, especially mid-season. - Timing: "mid-season OK" or "wait for off-season". - Assumptions it breaks: which current design choice it would change (for example, revealing picks before kickoff, adding money, adding chat, changing a scoring rule, adding new outside services). Finish with your single top recommendation and one sentence on why. Write in plain language; explain any technical term in a few words. Don't pad the list: fewer strong ideas beat many weak ones.
