The user wants me to design "an apple" — this is playful and ambiguous. They said "you are designer please design a apple". So they want me to act as a designer and design an apple. This could mean: 1. Design an apple fruit (like a product design / visual design of an apple) 2. Design an Apple Inc. product 3. Design an apple brand/logo The most natural interpretation is a visual design of an apple — and since I deliver web experiences, the best move is to create an HTML page that IS the designed apple: a striking, memorable single-page presentation of an apple, designed with real craft. Let me think about what would be genuinely impressive. I could: **Option A: An interactive apple drawing** — an apple rendered with SVG/Canvas that you can take a bite of (interactive!). Click to bite, revealing the flesh, seeds inside. That's a signature moment: "take a bite". Progressively eating the apple, revealing the seed core with a star pattern (apples cut horizontally show a 5-pointed star of seeds — that's a beautiful botanical detail). **Option B: A design presentation** — like an Apple-style product launch page for an apple. Minimal, iconic. "Apple. Redesigned." That's witty and clever — a keynote-style page for a literal apple fruit. **Option C: Cross-section interactive** — an anatomical exploration of the apple, botanical illustration style. I think the most memorable and delightful is a combination: a beautifully rendered apple (SVG, with rich gradients... wait, I want to avoid decorative gradients as fake design. But for rendering a fruit realistically, gradients ARE the medium — shading an apple requires radial gradients because that's how light works on a 3D object. That's not "decorative gradient to fake design sense" — it's rendering a physical object. Rendering fruit without gradients would look flat and bad. The concern about gradients is about UI decoration — gradient banners, gradient buttons. For depicting a 3D object, light and shade via gradients is legitimate craft. I'll use them for the apple rendering itself, but keep the page UI flat, typographic, restrained.) So the concept: **"Apple — A Design Study"** — a single-page piece that presents the apple like a designer would present a product. Editorial typography, generous whitespace, a large hero apple rendered in SVG. The signature interaction: **take a bite** — click the apple and bites get taken out, progressively revealing the cross-section with the seed star. Each click plays a crunch (via Web Audio API — synthesized sound, no external files). After the apple is eaten down to the core, a final message appears: "The core of it." or something poetic. Maybe a "Grow another" reset button that regrows the apple with a subtle animation. Let me design this carefully. **Visual language:** - Editorial, print-like. Warm paper background (off-white cream, like #F4F1EA or similar warm paper). Dark ink text (#1A1815). One accent: the apple's red. - Typography: I need a distinctive font, not Inter/Roboto. For an editorial feel: a strong serif display — "Fraunces" is gorgeous and has optical sizing, very characterful. Pair with a mono for labels/specs — "Space Grotesk" or a mono like "IBM Plex Mono" for annotations/spec labels. Fraunces + a mono feels like a botanical plate meets a design spec sheet. That's a great authored voice. - Layout: asymmetric editorial. Big apple slightly off-center. Side annotations with thin leader lines pointing to parts of the apple (like a technical drawing): "stem", "blush", "highlight", "the bite line". Small caps mono labels. This gives the "technical/botanical plate" feel — very authored. - The apple itself: drawn in SVG with layered radial gradients for realistic shading — deep red with yellow-green blush near top/stem, a crisp specular highlight, subtle speckles (lenticels — real apples have tiny light dots), a brown stem, a green leaf with veins. Rendered well, this can look genuinely beautiful. **The bite interaction:** - Clicking the apple takes a bite. Implementation: I can use SVG clipping — define the apple shape, then subtract bite circles (using a mask with black circles). Each bite removes a circular chunk from the visible apple, revealing what's "behind" — which is the flesh cross-section layer? Hmm, but a bite from outside removes skin and flesh, you see flesh through the wound, not the cross-section. How to render a bite convincingly in SVG: - The apple body is a path (or group of gradients). - Bites: circles clipped to the apple, filled with the pale flesh color (#F7F0DC-ish), with a slightly darker rim (the exposed skin edge has a thin dark red outline where the skin was). Actually a nice detail: each bite circle shows flesh color, and the apple's outline (skin) traces around — the bite edge has a thin ring of the skin color? In reality when you bite an apple, the wound is flesh-colored with a thin skin line at the boundary only where the bite cut through skin on the silhouette edge. Simpler and stylized-beautiful approach: - Each bite is a circle of flesh color with a slightly wavy edge (use a rough circle or scalloped path for organic feel) and a subtle inner shadow (darker rim on top-left, giving depth to the concave bite). - A thin darker red arc on the parts of the bite circle that intersect the original apple silhouette (skin edge). Implementation with SVG masks: ``` per bite ``` Apply mask to the whole apple group. Then separately, draw the flesh: for each bite circle, draw a flesh-colored circle (same position) UNDER the masked apple? No wait — if the apple is masked out (transparent), we need flesh to show in the hole. Layer order: 1. Background (paper). 2. Flesh layer: for each bite, a circle of flesh color (slightly inset? Actually the bite reveals flesh across the whole bitten area at the front surface... in 2D illustration convention, the bite hole shows flesh color where the bite was taken). But the bite shouldn't remove the whole depth — actually in 2D, a bite from the silhouette removes that region entirely, and the remaining surface shows flesh where bitten. Convention: draw flesh circles for each bite, then draw the apple on top masked by (apple shape minus bite circles). So the bite area shows flesh circle, and the apple shows everywhere else within the silhouette. The flesh circle should be slightly smaller than the bite or same — same works. Add inner shadow at top edge of the bite to suggest concavity. And a thin skin-colored arc where the bite circle crosses the silhouette (which we can approximate by drawing a ring stroke of the flesh circle clipped to... complicated). Simpler: draw for each bite a group: - circle fill flesh (#F6EEDD) - a crescent/path for inner shadow along the upper-left rim (darker tan, low opacity) — suggests depth - optional speckles And draw the skin edge: the original apple silhouette clipped by the bite circle minus a slightly smaller circle → a thin red arc where bite meets silhouette. To do that: clipPath = bite circle; draw the apple's outline path with thick stroke, masked to only show within bite circle minus inner circle. Hmm, this is getting complex but SVG handles it: For skin edge: take the apple path with `stroke: skinColor; stroke-width: 6; fill: none`, apply `clip-path` of the bite circle, and mask out the region of a smaller concentric circle (radius = biteR - 4). Result: only a 4px-wide band of the outline inside the bite circle — exactly where the skin was cut. That's a genuinely convincing detail. But it requires the apple outline to pass through the bite circle. Near the silhouette edge it will. Actually, let me simplify: bites will mostly be taken from the silhouette edge (I'll place bite centers near the edge, offset outward slightly so roughly half the circle is inside the apple). The skin arc detail works where the outline crosses. Where bites are interior (when apple gets small), no skin — fine, mask just shows nothing there, which is correct. Alternatively, keep it simple and robust: the bite circle itself gets a full ring stroke in a slightly darker flesh/tan tone at low opacity to suggest the cut, plus the inner shadow crescent. And where it meets the silhouette, the apple's own outline just ends (because masked), creating the classic look. Honestly, the masked-apple approach automatically makes the apple's shaded edge disappear into the bite — adding a subtle darker rim on the flesh circle near the boundary of the apple's remaining edge... Let me not over-engineer. Plan: - Apple drawn as a richly shaded SVG group. - Bites: click point → compute bite circle (radius ~ 34–48 depending on stage), clamp so it must intersect the apple region. - Render: - Layer A (bottom): for each bite, flesh circle + inner-shadow crescent + a few flesh speckles. Clip flesh circles to apple silhouette? No — bite centers near edge, half outside; flesh should only appear inside the original apple. So clip the whole flesh-bites group with a clipPath of the original apple silhouette. - Layer B (top): the apple group with mask = white rect minus bite circles. - Layer C (topmost): skin-edge arcs: for each bite, apple outline stroke clipped to bite circle and masked to exclude inner circle. Actually I can do: a `` containing the apple path with fill none, stroke skin dark, stroke-width 8, plus mask with a black circle of radius biteR-4 (hide interior) — hmm masks inside clip... SVG supports mask + clip-path on same element (clip applies, then mask? Actually both apply — clip-path clips, mask masks; combined is fine). Alternatively simpler: draw a slightly smaller flesh circle on top of the flesh circle edge... Let me try yet another approach for skin edge: after drawing flesh circle (clipped to silhouette), draw a ring: circle with radius biteR, stroke = skin color (a deep red, e.g. #8E1F2F), stroke-width 3, fill none, clipped to the apple silhouette AND masked... no wait — the ring at radius biteR would sit exactly at the boundary between apple and bite. Where the bite is interior, this ring borders apple on the outside too — but interior bites only happen when there's no more silhouette nearby... Actually if I draw the ring at radius biteR clipped to the original silhouette, it appears as a red ring around the whole bite circle (where within the silhouette). On the silhouette-crossing side, the ring would extend outside the apple slightly? The ring is clipped to silhouette so it only shows within the apple — the outer half of the ring is outside the silhouette (clipped away), inner half shows: a 1.5px red arc hugging the bite edge. Hmm, but for an interior bite, a red ring around a flesh circle looks like the skin surrounds the flesh — which is actually... wrong? If you bite the middle of the apple face (front surface), you'd see flesh with skin around the perimeter? In 2D front view, biting the front face: the bite removes front surface; through the hole you see... the flesh wound, which is bounded by skin (the remaining front surface). So yes — actually a thin skin rim around a front bite is CORRECT! When you look at an apple from the front and bite the front surface, the bite hole is flesh-colored, bounded by red skin. When you bite the silhouette edge, the bite notch is flesh-colored, and at the notch there's no skin arc along the outer silhouette (skin cut away). Hmm, the ring clipped to silhouette: at silhouette-crossing bites, the ring's outer part is clipped, leaving red on the inner side hugging the boundary — but the true look should have the red skin arc along the INNER boundary only... wait no. Let me think again. Bite at silhouette edge, half-circle inside apple: the bitten region (flesh) is the half-disc inside the silhouette. The boundary between remaining apple and flesh is the diameter line (chord). At that chord, there should be... skin? When you bite an apple's side, the wound surface is flesh; the boundary between the wound and the remaining red surface — there is no skin line there, the red surface just ends at the wound edge. Hmm, actually the wound edge does show a tiny bit of skin thickness (the skin wraps around the edge of the wound where the skin was cut perpendicular). In illustration convention, bite marks often show: flesh circle + slightly darker outline of the bite scallops, and the red apple edge terminates. OK here's the honest, simple, beautiful convention used by every good flat illustration of a bitten apple: - Flesh circles with a subtle scalloped/wavy edge. - A thin darker outline (warm tan/brown, low opacity) around the bite — reads as the wound edge. - Apple masked by bites. - Where bite meets silhouette: the mask creates a clean intersection automatically; the apple's outer shading just stops. Looks clean and correct. - Add a subtle inner shadow crescent inside the bite (top side darker) for depth. That's convincing enough and robust. I'll also make the bite edge slightly irregular: instead of perfect circles, I can generate a blob path with a few random radius perturbations — organic bite edges. I'll generate path data for an irregular circle (8–10 points, radius jitter ±6%). Use it for both mask hole and flesh shape. Also mouth-position logic: bites should be taken from the edge nearest the click. When user clicks on the apple, compute the bite center: move from click point toward apple center? No — a bite is taken at the edge nearest the click. So: direction from apple center to click point, bite center placed at silhouette edge in that direction (slightly inside, so ~60% of the circle is within the apple). Bite radius shrinks as the apple shrinks. If the remaining apple gets tiny (area below threshold), the final bite reveals the core. **The core reveal — signature moment:** When the apple is mostly eaten (say after N bites, e.g., 6–8, or when remaining area < threshold), the final state is the core: the classic apple core shape with seeds, standing on... hmm, cores don't stand. Presentation: when eaten down, the core remains — draw a core: pale flesh column with vertical fiber striations, two dark brown seeds visible in a slit, the stem with leaf on top. Then a caption fades in: "That's the heart of it." plus a stat or a poetic line. And a "Plant a seed" button → resets: core animates... growing back? A reverse-eat animation is complex; instead, "Grow another" → the apple scales in with a gentle overshoot spring, bites cleared, annotations return. Maybe the leaf unfurls (scale/rotate animation). Good enough — the reset can be a fresh apple with a small pop-in and a growing leaf. Also each bite plays a **crunch sound** via Web Audio: synthesized noise burst — white noise through a bandpass filter with fast decay + a few random "crackle" grains. I can make a decent crunch: buffer of noise, bandpass ~1200–2500Hz, sharp attack, 120ms decay, plus 2–3 shorter delayed quieter bursts for texture. That's a delightful detail. Add a small mute toggle (icon). Volume modest. **Annotations (botanical plate style):** Thin leader lines from labels to points on the apple: - "stem — Malus domestica" pointing to stem - "blush" pointing to the yellow-orange blush area - "specular" or "highlight" — hmm, too technical? Could be charming: "the highlight, held by hand" ... Let me craft labels with a designer's wit: - "01 / stem — the handle" - "02 / blush — gradient of ripeness" (careful, I want to avoid saying gradient as UI decoration; it's fine as a word about the fruit) - "03 / the bite line" appears after first bite - "04 / seeds ×5 — the plan" Dynamic annotations: after the first bite, a new annotation appears pointing at the bite: "05 / a decision, made". That's the witty editorial voice — design-speak applied to an apple. People will remember this. Also a spec panel (mono font): ``` SPEC weight 182 g diameter 78 mm crunch 74 dB sweetness brix 13.4 finish hand-polished ``` With the "crunch" value updating live with each bite (random 70–85 dB) — playful. And weight decreasing with each bite (182g minus ~25–35g per bite). That's a lovely living detail: the spec sheet is real-time telemetry of the eating. Love it. **Header/hero copy:** Title treatment: big serif "An Apple." with a subtitle like "Designed by three billion years of iteration. Presented here in its final form." Or a keynote-parody tone: "Apple. The original." Keep it elegant, not parody-heavy. Something like: - Kicker (mono, small caps): "DESIGN STUDY Nº 001 — FRUIT" - Title: "The Apple." (Fraunces, huge, maybe italic swash on "Apple") - Sub: "Eighty million years of R&D. Zero iterations wasted. You may take a bite." Interaction hint: "Click the apple to take a bite" — shown as a small mono note near the apple, disappearing after first bite. **Footer:** small colophon: "Set in Fraunces & Space Mono. Crunch synthesized in Web Audio. No apples were wasted — this one regrows." **Layout:** - Warm paper bg. Left: type column (kicker, title, description, spec panel). Right: the apple, large, on a subtle circular "stage" — maybe a very subtle shadow ellipse under the apple (soft, not a decorative glow — a grounded shadow is physical). Leader-line annotations absolutely positioned around the apple, connected with thin 1px lines (I'll compute in JS or hand-place with the SVG). Better: put annotations inside the apple's SVG so lines and positions are exact and scale together. Yes — annotations as SVG text with `` leaders inside the same SVG viewBox. That keeps geometry exact. - Responsive: on narrow screens, stack — apple below text, annotations still inside SVG. Let me think about the apple SVG rendering in detail. ViewBox maybe 0 0 640 640. Apple centered ~(320, 340), radius ~180 wide, ~170 tall. Apple shape: classic two-lobed bottom? A nice apple path. Let me construct with cubic beziers. Classic apple: top has a dip for the stem, bottom has slight dimple. I'll craft: Using a symmetric-ish path (apple slightly asymmetric for life). Let me define with points; I'll write the path by feel: ``` M 320 165 (top center, stem dip) C 350 140, 400 138, 435 165 (right shoulder) C 480 195, 505 250, 495 305 C 488 355, 460 420, 405 465 C 370 494, 345 500, 320 498 (bottom right to center) C 295 500, 268 492, 235 463 C 182 417, 152 353, 146 303 C 138 248, 162 193, 207 164 C 243 139, 292 141, 320 165 Z ``` Something like that — a heart-ish apple. I'll tune numbers mentally; final look matters but exact coords just need to be plausible. Actually, let me be careful and design a good apple path properly, since it's the centerpiece. Apple dimensions: width ~340 (x from 150 to 490), height ~340 (y from 150 to 495), center (320, 325). Top dip at y~165 center, shoulders at y~185, widest at y~330, bottom dimple at y~490. Path (clockwise from top-center dip): - Start: M 320 172 - Right shoulder curve: C 338 152, 372 146, 404 160 → ends at right shoulder start... let me structure as segments: 1. Top dip → right shoulder: M 320 172 C 340 150, 378 148, 408 166 2. Right shoulder → right widest: C 446 186, 472 226, 476 280 3. Right widest → lower right: C 479 336, 462 396, 420 442 4. Lower right → bottom dimple: C 392 472, 350 492, 322 490 5. Bottom dimple (mirror, leftward): C 294 492, 250 470, 222 440 6. Left lower → left widest: C 178 394, 160 334, 164 278 7. Left widest → left shoulder: C 168 224, 194 184, 232 166 8. Left shoulder → top dip: C 262 149, 300 151, 320 172 Z Widest x: right ~476, left ~164 → width ~312. Height: 172→490 = 318. Good proportions, slightly tall apple (nice). Bottom dimple: point 322 490 is the lowest center; neighbors rise (392 472 / 350 492...). Hmm my segment 4 ends at 322 490 with control 350 492 — nearly flat into center; the dimple needs the bottom center to rise slightly. Classic apple bottom: two lobes meeting at center with slight crease. My path: bottom center at (322,490), sides at (420,442) and (222,440) — center is LOWER than sides by ~50px, that's a round bottom, not dimpled. For slight dimple, center bottom should be a touch higher than lobe lows: e.g., lobes lowest at y=496 (at x≈285 and x≈355), center dimple at y=478. Let me redo segment 4–5: 4. From (420,442): C 402 474, 372 494, 340 494 → then to center dimple: the dimple means at x≈320, y rises to 480. So: from (340,494) C 332 492, 326 486, 322 480. Then symmetric: C 318 486, 310 492, 302 494 → C 270 494, 240 474, 222 442. OK fine, I'll write it as two cubic segments per side. It's fine to keep subtle. Top dip: stem area — top center at (320,172), shoulders at ~166-172 height at x=408 and x=232... wait shoulders at y≈166? That makes top nearly flat with tiny dip. Real apple: pronounced dip. Shoulders should be at y≈195, dip at y≈158. Let me set: dip point (320,158), shoulders at (398,196) and (242,196) with control points making a smooth dip. Revised: 1. M 320 160 — right: C 344 148, 372 158, 398 186 (dip rises to shoulder) 2. C 436 212, 468 244, 474 292 (widest) 3. C 480 342, 464 398, 422 444 4. C 400 468, 372 490, 344 492 5. C 334 493, 326 488, 320 480 (into dimple) 6. C 314 488, 306 493, 296 492 7. C 268 490, 240 468, 218 444 8. C 176 398, 160 342, 166 292 9. C 172 244, 204 212, 242 186 10. C 268 158, 296 148, 320 160 Z Check smoothness at joins: point 398,186 with incoming control 372,158 (direction from upper-left) and outgoing control 436,212 (to lower-right) — direction roughly continuous (going down-right). Good enough; small kinks read as organic. Top dip at 320,160 with incoming control 296,148 → incoming direction from left is (24,12) i.e., down-right; outgoing control 344,148 → up-right. That creates a V-dip — actually good, that's the stem crease. Might be sharp; the dip in apples is fairly deep V, fine. **Shading (gradients as rendering, legitimate):** - Base fill: radial gradient centered upper-right-ish (light from upper left actually; let me pick light from upper-left: highlight at ~ (250, 230)). Colors: from #E8563F? Hmm. Apple red: rich red with depth. Radial gradient: center light warm red #D8442E... let me design: - cx 38% cy 32% r 75%: stops: 0% #E5533A (bright warm red), 45% #C22E24 (deep red), 80% #8E1B1E (dark maroon), 100% #6E1216 (deep edge). - Blush: an additional overlapping radial gradient (yellow-green #E9C46A → transparent) centered upper area near stem/left shoulder, blend mode... in SVG I can add a second ellipse-ish path with radial gradient from rgba(233,196,106,0.9) to transparent, clipped to apple. Also a green tinge near stem: rgba(122,150,70,0.5). Layer these clipped to the apple path. - Vertical streaks: real apples have subtle vertical streaking — a few thin paths of darker red at 15% opacity running vertically, clipped to apple, slightly curved. Adds realism. - Speckles (lenticels): ~40 tiny dots, radius 0.8–1.6, color rgba(255,230,190,0.25–0.5), scattered with seeded random, clipped to apple, avoiding the highlight zone. - Highlight: an ellipse rotated, at upper-left (~(245,225)), white at 0.75→0 gradient, plus a smaller intense core spot. Crisp specular: small ellipse nearly white #FFF at 0.85 with blur? I can use feGaussianBlur for softness. Use a `` blur 6 for the main sheen, and a crisp small one unblurred. - Rim shade bottom/right: apple path stroked with dark at low opacity? Or an inner shadow via a radial gradient dark at edges (already in base gradient). Add extra ambient occlusion at bottom: ellipse dark blur at bottom. - Top cavity: near the stem dip, darker — a small radial dark gradient around stem base. - Stem: brown curved path from (322,162) up to (338,84): path M 322 166 C 322 140, 330 112, 344 88, stroke #6B4423, width 9, round cap; with a lighter stroke overlay width 4 offset for dimension, and cut top: tiny ellipse at top #C89B6B. - Leaf: attached near stem top: a leaf path (two quadratic curves forming pointed ellipse), green gradient #7FA65A → #4E7A34, with central vein line and 3–4 side veins, rotated ~ -35°, attached at (340,92). Leaf group with transform-origin at attachment for the unfurl animation (scale 0→1 with slight rotate, cubic-bezier overshoot). That will look genuinely rich. All shading gradients are clipped via `` of the apple path — good, one clipPath reused. **Core state rendering:** When done (area threshold or fixed bite count... better: dynamic — keep going until remaining apple can't fit a bite, i.e., when the next bite circle can't be placed with enough apple overlap → switch to core). Core drawing: - Shape: classic core: two-lobed column. Path: tall hourglass-ish with rounded lobes. Roughly: from stem base down, a shape like an inverted teardrop with waist. I'll draw: outline path ~ width 130, height 240, from y=190 to y=470, waist at y=330 (width ~70), top width ~100, bottom flares slightly and is ragged (bitten). Fill: pale flesh #F3E9CF with vertical fiber strokes (thin lines #D9C79E at varying opacity), edges slightly irregular (small scallops at bottom). - Seed slit: at center, a vertical lens shape (pointed ellipse) darker #B98A4E outline with two seeds: teardrop shapes #4A2E1B with highlight dot. Positioned around waist, slightly offset. - Keep stem+leaf on top (they persist through all bites — the mask applies to the apple body only, not stem/leaf... but bites could clip the stem? Bite placement clamps away from stem region; and near the end, bite size shrinks. Simplest: stem+leaf in a separate top layer NOT masked; bites near the top are prevented by keeping bite center direction away from straight-up? Eh, minor: mask stem+leaf too but ensure bite circles never reach stem area: clamp bite center distance from stem base ≥ biteR + 30. Fine — just include stem/leaf in masked group; constraint avoids beheading.) Transition to core: after final bite, fade the remaining apple + bites out (opacity 0, 600ms), fade core in with a slight scale from 0.96, and show the closing caption + "Grow another" button. Caption near apple: "What remains is the idea." — chef's kiss line for a design study. Or "Down to the idea." Let me choose: header sub says "You may take a bite." Final: "Down to the idea. — every great design eats down to this." Something like: big italic Fraunces: "What's left is the idea." with mono sub: "core preserved · seeds viable · plant at will". Button: "Grow another". Also seeds: mention "five seeds" in annotations — apple seed star! If I cut an apple horizontally, seeds form a star. Could the core reveal show the star? Front view won't. Skip; annotation covers it: "seeds — five, always five" (true for most apples!). Nice trivia. **Bite mechanics detail:** - Click on the apple SVG (pointerdown on an invisible hit area = the apple path itself). Get click coords in SVG space via inverse CTM (`svg.getScreenCTM().inverse()` with DOMPoint transform). - Direction d = normalize(click − center). Bite center = center + d * (currentRadiusAlong(d) * 0.72)? Better: compute apple silhouette distance along d from center: approximate by sampling: find max t such that point(center + d*t) is inside apple path using `isPointInFill` on the apple path element (SVGGeometryElement.isPointInFill needs DOMPoint in path's user space; supported in modern browsers — `path.isPointInFill(new DOMPoint(x,y))`). I can binary search t from 0 to 260. That's robust and elegant! Apple path is a ``; isPointInFill available (Chrome/FF/Safari support: Safari had bugs historically; fallback: use an offscreen hit-test via `document.elementFromPoint`? Simpler fallback: sample-based approach with a precomputed inside test using the path... let me just do binary search with isPointInFill and guard with try/catch fallback to a radial approximation using an ellipse (center 320,325, rx 155, ry 165). Fine.) - Bite center = point on silhouette + push slightly outward: center_b = center + d * (t_sil * 1.02)? If bite center ON the silhouette, half the circle is outside → bite removes a nice edge chunk. But as apple shrinks, silhouette distance shrinks and overlapping previous bites... the actual remaining shape is apple minus bites; the next bite should target remaining edge. Clicking anywhere still maps to direction d; bite placed at silhouette in that direction regardless of whether that area is already eaten — could result in a bite floating in a previously bitten (flesh) area — visually the new bite circle over old flesh = merges holes, fine, it just eats more. But if placed fully in an existing hole (no apple overlap), nothing changes → wasted click. Guard: check overlap — sample some points: if the bite circle has < some fraction of points inside current remaining apple, nudge center inward along d until it has ≥35% overlap with remaining shape. "Remaining inside" test: inside apple path AND outside all existing bite circles (each bite's irregular blob — approximate as circle radius biteR*0.9 for tests). Binary search along d for best position: find largest t such that overlap fraction ≥ 0.35. Simple: start at t_sil, step inward by 12 until overlap passes (max 30 steps). Good. - Bite radius: starts 52, shrinks with each bite: r = max(26, 52 − bites*4). Also scale with remaining silhouette distance: r = min(base, t_sil*0.55 + 14)? Keep simple: r = clamp( t*0.6, 26, 50 ) where t = silhouette distance found. As the apple gets eaten, t shrinks → bites smaller. Nice organic progression. - Stop condition: if even after nudging, overlap < 18% OR remaining t < 34 → don't take bite; instead trigger the core reveal (final transform). Also cap total bites ~9 then force core? No, keep it geometry-driven; it'll naturally end after ~6–8 bites. Also clicking should be prevented during core state (show gentle toast "Nothing left but the idea." if clicked? The core has the button; fine, small inline hint). - Also weight/crunch stats update per bite: weight −= 18+rand*14; crunch dB random 68–84; display with quick number tick animation (just set text, maybe brief scale pulse via CSS class). - Sound: crunch per bite, pitch/character varies slightly. Also a soft "thud/whoosh"? No — just crunch. Mute toggle button top-right corner of the apple stage (icon: simple speaker SVG paths drawn by hand — no emoji). I said use an icon library for small icons; but a single hand-drawn SVG speaker icon is cleaner than loading a whole library for one glyph. Hand-drawn inline SVG icon is fine (it's an icon, not emoji). Or use lucide via CDN? For 2 icons (sound on/off), inline SVG paths from memory (speaker: polygon + arcs). I'll hand-write: speaker triangle + one/two arc paths. Fine. **Toast/inline messages:** e.g., before first interaction, hint "Click anywhere on the apple — take a bite." (mono, with a small arrow ↘ drawn as SVG or CSS). After first bite, hint fades. If user clicks during core state: subtle text pulse on "What's left is the idea." — or a small inline note "seeds are ready to plant" — keep simple. **Grow another:** button (styled: mono uppercase, bordered 1px ink, hover fill ink/text paper, active press). On click: reset state: bites=[], stats reset, core fades out, apple fades/scales in (transform: scale .8→1 with spring-ish cubic-bezier(.2,1.4,.3,1)), leaf unfurl animation restarts (re-trigger via class removal/add + reflow). Also re-show hint? Not needed. **Audio synthesis (crunch):** ``` const ctx = new (AudioContext)(); function crunch(){ if(muted) return; const t0 = ctx.currentTime; // noise buffer const dur = 0.18; const buf = ctx.createBuffer(1, ctx.sampleRate*dur, ctx.sampleRate); const data = buf.getChannelData(0); for(let i=0;i

``` Hmm — maybe more striking: title overlapping the apple slightly (editorial overlap). Big serif "The Apple." with the apple bleeding behind/over the type? A classic editorial move: huge title, apple overlapping the last word. Let me design: full-width header: kicker line, then title "An Apple, Considered." — hmm. Or two-line title: "The Apple," / "taken personally." Let me draft copy: - Kicker: `DESIGN STUDY Nº 001 · MALUS DOMESTICA` - Title: "The Perfect Form" too grand. "An apple, redesigned." — cute inversion of Apple Inc. Actually: title "Apple." then italic sub-line "redesigned." Hmm too close to trademark parody? It's fine, it's witty. But maybe cleaner: Title: "The Apple." (huge, Fraunces 120px). Next line italic lighter: "eighty million years in development, finally shipped." Then lede paragraph: "No pitch deck. No focus groups. Just pigment, sugar, and a stem that fits the hand. What follows is a working prototype — one interactive feature: you may bite it." That's an authored, witty voice. Spec panel header: `LIVE SPECIMEN DATA` with rows updating. Rows: - mass: 182 g (decreasing) - diameter: Ø 78 mm (recompute from remaining silhouette? cute but fake is fine — derive from remaining width estimate: diameter shrinks with bites — I can approximate: 78 − bites*6 mm) - crunch: — (becomes dB per bite) - sweetness: 13.2 °Bx (slightly randomizes down each bite: apples core is less sweet — decrease 0.1–0.4) - status: INTACT → TASTED → PARTIAL → mostly eaten → GONE (state word) — nice living detail. - bites: 0 (count) Also a thin progress bar? No — instead a row of small tick marks (one per bite) — like tally marks. Cute: a tally of bites drawn as thin ink strokes (SVG or characters). I'll render tally in a small element: groups of 4 vertical strokes + diagonal 5th, hand-drawn style via inline SVG strokes. That's a memorable micro-detail! Tally marks accumulating per bite. Yes — do it: a `BITES —` label and tally SVG (each bite adds a stroke; every 5th crosses the previous four). Pure SVG lines, slight rotation jitter for hand-drawn feel. **Annotations in SVG:** positions relative to apple at (320,~325). Labels outside apple: - Left-top: "stem" → point (330,120): label at (60,110), leader line from label to near stem with a small elbow (horizontal then diagonal) and a dot at target. Mono 12px, letter-spacing. - Right: "blush — the ripeness ramp" pointing at (430,250) area: label at (600,215)? viewBox width 720... labels can extend: keep viewBox 0 0 720 640, apple centered x=360? Let me shift apple center to (360, 330) for symmetric room; annotations on both sides. Adjust my path numbers by +40 x. Eh — easier: wrap apple group in `` — all my coordinates stay. Then annotations use absolute coords with apple effectively centered at 360. - "the shoulder" ... choose 3 static annotations: 1. stem — "fits the hand" → target stem mid (approx (378,110)) label left-top. 2. blush — "ripeness, gradient-managed" → target (470,255) (upper-right area), label right side. 3. ground shadow? Or "highlight — one fixed light source" pointing at highlight (285,235): label left. - Dynamic annotation #4 appears after first bite: "the bite — a decision" pointing to the latest bite location (compute from bite center; label placed on the opposite side of the apple from bite to avoid crossing, or just at a fixed bottom-right position with leader to the bite). Position label bottom-right (e.g., 640, 520), leader line to last bite center. If bite is on right side, label bottom-left instead. Simple rule: label x = bite.cx > 360 ? 90 : 630 (side opposite), y = 540 fixed. Leader: polyline label→elbow→bite center with end dot. Since bites move, annotation updates to latest bite each time (reposition the line). Cute: it follows your most recent bite. Leader line style: stroke ink at 0.35 opacity, 1px, with 3px dot at target and small 45° elbow. Label: mono uppercase 11px letter-spacing 0.12em, with index numbers "01", "02"... Also maybe number the annotations "01 STEM", "02 BLUSH", "03 HIGHLIGHT", "04 BITE Nº n". Annotations shouldn't be masked (outside apple mostly). Keep them in a separate top group. Annotation target points are inside the apple — leader lines will cross the apple surface. That's standard in technical plates; fine, use ink lines at low opacity over the fruit. Actually lines crossing the richly colored apple might be visually noisy; use white-ish line over the apple? Mixed: line color ink 0.4 — over red it reads okay at 1px. Or make lines stop just at silhouette edge with dot slightly inside. I'll have the line end at the target with a small open circle (ring) marker — reads as callout. Fine. **Header layout:** Let me do a full editorial composition: Grid: 12-col; on desktop: left column (5 cols) for text, right (7 cols) stage. Title can span wider with the apple overlapping: put title in left column but allow it to overflow right (white-space handling). Simpler robust: title block above the grid, spanning full width, apple stage on right overlapping the title's bottom via negative margin. Risky for overlap collisions with annotations. Keep clean: two-column; title inside left column, large (clamp 64–104px). With Fraunces at 96px, "The Apple." fits in a 480px column? "The Apple." at 96px ≈ maybe 420px wide — okay tight; allow title to exceed column via `width: max-content; max-width: none` and let it overlap the stage slightly (position relative, z-index above? overlapping type over apple could look great: "The Apple." with the period sitting near the apple edge). I'll let it overflow (no wrap) with `white-space: nowrap` — and since apple is to the right, slight overlap = intentional editorial overlap. Title color ink; where it overlaps apple (red), ink-on-red still readable. Set title z-index above SVG. Yes. Actually — even better signature composition: the title "The Apple." set huge across the top spanning full viewport, and the apple positioned so its top (stem+leaf) overlaps INTO the title area, in front of the text? Layering apple in front of huge type = classic poster. Implement: header relative; SVG absolutely positioned overlapping? Complexity/robustness tradeoff. I'll do moderate overlap: title in left column overflowing slightly over the apple's left edge. Good enough, elegant. Let me now also consider: alternative hero — apple HUGE centered, type arranged around it (poster style), annotations radiating. Hmm, that's arguably stronger visually: a big centered apple (60vh), title overlapping bottom-left, annotations around, spec panel bottom-left, colophon bottom-right. A poster composition is more striking than a column layout. But bites interaction needs apple clickable; fine. Decide: **Poster composition**: - Paper bg with very subtle grain? Grain via SVG feTurbulence overlay at 3% opacity — adds print texture. Tasteful, low. Also maybe a faint ruled baseline? No, keep clean. - Top-left: kicker mono. - Top-right: sound toggle + "reset/grow" appears there later? Put sound toggle top-right corner. - Center: giant apple (SVG ~ min(66vh)) slightly right of center. - Title: bottom-left over the page: "The Apple." huge (Fraunces italic maybe for "Apple"). Below it lede paragraph (max 34ch). - Bottom-left under lede: spec table (mono, small) — the live data. - Right-bottom: bite tally. - Annotations around the apple. - Hint: small mono "click the apple — take a bite" with a thin curved arrow pointing to apple. Draw arrow as SVG path with arrowhead, hand-drawn feel, near bottom-left of apple pointing right. - Footer colophon centered bottom, tiny. Responsive: below 900px, poster becomes column: kicker, apple (smaller), annotations still fine within SVG, title below apple, lede, spec. Manageable via flex column ordering. Hmm, but with a big centered apple and absolute-positioned text, mobile needs care. Use CSS grid areas with named areas; SVG stage sized with clamp. I'll write it carefully. Actually, let me reconsider a hybrid that's robust: a centered stage (SVG including apple + annotations) taking most of viewport, with a text block overlapping bottom-left (title+lede+spec) via absolute positioning on desktop, and stacking on mobile. Plus top kicker and top-right controls. This is achievable and looks like an authored poster. Wait, I want to be careful about overlapping text with the apple — the spec panel bottom-left might collide with apple's lower-left if apple is centered. Position apple slightly right: stage width ~ min(92vw, 760px), centered with margin-left auto offset. Or grid: [text 380px | apple 1fr]. The overlap title: only title overlaps (title width can exceed its column into the apple zone). Let me go with: ``` .stage-wrap { display:grid; grid-template-columns: minmax(300px, 420px) 1fr; min-height: calc(100vh - headerish); align-items:center; } ``` - Left cell: kicker, title (nowrap, overflowing), lede, spec, tally, grow button (hidden). - Right cell: SVG stage (height ~ min(78vh, 680px)). - Footer spans bottom. Mobile (<860px): single column, order: kicker, title, lede, apple svg, spec+tally, footer. Title no longer nowrap (allow wrap at small sizes, font clamp smaller). This is solid, robust, and still has poster character via the overflowing title + annotations + paper texture. Good. **Color palette:** - Paper: #F3EEE3 (warm cream). Slightly textured. - Ink: #1C1917 (warm near-black). - Accent red: #C2331F / deep #7E1B15 (used sparingly: the apple itself, links/hover, tally marks? tally in ink). - Muted ink: #6B6357 for secondary text. - Flesh: #F6EDD8, flesh shade #E4D3AC, wound edge #C9AE7E. - Skin deep for arcs: #8A1E1C. No blue/purple anywhere. **Fonts:** Google Fonts CDN: Fraunces (opsz, weights 400–700, italic) + "Space Grotesk"? I wanted a mono for labels — options: "IBM Plex Mono", "Space Mono", "JetBrains Mono". Space Mono has quirky character that fits editorial. Use Fraunces + Space Mono. Both non-generic. Title in Fraunces 600 with tight tracking, maybe softness via `font-variation-settings "SOFT" 60` (Fraunces has SOFT axis! and WONK axis — wonky alternates, characterful!). I can use `font-variation-settings: "opsz" 144, "SOFT" 40, "WONK" 1` for display. Fraunces WONK gives the quirky 'a' etc. Nice authored touch. **Now the code.** Single HTML file. Let me write it fully, carefully. Key JS pieces: 1. Bite mask handling: one `` containing white rect + per-bite black blob path. Update by re-rendering mask children. 2. Blob path generator: irregular circle: n=9 points, radius r*(0.92+rand*0.16), angles evenly + jitter, smooth with catmull-rom→bezier or simple quadratic smoothing. Implement `blobPath(cx,cy,r)`: ``` function blobPath(cx,cy,r,seed){ const n=9, pts=[]; let s=seed; const rnd=()=> (s=(s*9301+49297)%233280)/233280; for(let i=0;i`; isPointInFill expects user space of the element — i.e., coordinates in the path's local coordinate system (pre-transform). So if I test with coordinates in the untranslated frame, I must translate x-40. I'll define all bite logic in untranslated apple coords (center (320,332)), then add 40 when writing into scene (or put the entire interactive apple in a group translate(40,0) and keep all internal coords untranslated, mask also within that group — masks apply in userSpaceOnUse or objectBoundingBox; default maskContentUnits userSpaceOnUse — the mask content is in the coordinate system of the element referencing the mask, which is the translated group's user space? The mask is applied to an element; mask content units are in the user space in effect for the element referencing the mask — that includes ancestor transforms? The user space for the masked element is its own user space (after its ancestors' transforms are applied to establish its coordinate system). If the mask is applied to a child inside ``, the mask content coordinates are in that child's user space, which is the translated system... Actually the user space in effect for an element is established by all ancestors' transforms including the g's translate — so mask content in the same local coords as the path. To avoid confusion: apply the mask to the inner group that lives inside the translate group, using local coordinates. Both the apple path and mask circles then share coordinates. OK. Let me structure SVG: ``` ``` Wait ordering: flesh group and appleWhole are siblings; flesh drawn first, then appleWhole on top with mask cutting holes → holes reveal flesh. ✔. But the ground shadow: as the apple gets eaten, shadow should maybe shrink slightly — nice detail: scale shadow rx with bites: rx = 150 − bites*8. Subtle, do it. 4. Click handling: on svg pointerdown → compute point in scene coords (viewBox) → convert to apple-local (x−40). Then find silhouette distance: binary search max t where insideApple(cx+dx*t, cy+dy*t), t up to 300. Then place bite: t_bite = t_sil (bite center at silhouette edge). Overlap check & inward nudge: ``` let tb = tsil; const frac = ()=>{ // fraction of bite circle inside remaining apple let inside=0, total=24; for(let i=0;i<24;i++){const a=i/24*2π; const px=bcx+cos*r, py=bcy+sin*r; if(insideApple(px,py) && !insideAnyBite(px,py,0.92)) inside++;} return inside/total; } while(tb > 20 && frac() < 0.38) tb -= 10; // move inward if (frac() < 0.20 || tb < 30) => core reveal ``` Wait bite center at silhouette → half inside → frac≈0.5 initially (minus previous bites overlap) fine. As apple shrinks, silhouette in direction d may pass through previously bitten area; then inside test (apple path) true but insideAnyBite false... the frac test counts remaining; the nudge moves inward until enough fresh area. If can't achieve 0.38 within tb>30, but ≥0.20 at smaller... let me just: search tb from tsil down to 26 step 8; pick first with frac ≥ 0.35; if none but some tb has frac ≥ 0.18, use smallest such; else → core. r chosen: r = clamp(30, tsil*0.52, 52) and also min with (tb*0.9)? If tb becomes small the circle centered at tb with radius r extends beyond center — fine, eats through center. Keep r = clamp(0.5*tsil, 26, 50). As tsil→small, r→small. Core triggers when tsil < ~40 or no placement: with 6–9 bites it converges. Hmm, one more consideration: the direction d from apple center to click: if user clicks near center, d tiny — still fine (normalizes; random if near-zero: use click direction anyway; if length < 5 use random angle). Also allow clicking slightly outside apple (the stage svg) — accept clicks within some radius of apple (dist < 260) and map to direction; else ignore (or ignore gently). I'll accept pointerdown anywhere on the svg but only act if the click is within the apple bounding region (dist < 300) — else nothing. Actually make whole apple area clickable via the apple path itself as hit target + also the flesh? Simplest: pointerdown on the whole svg, then check dist to center < 320 → treat as bite direction. Users will click the apple anyway. But clicking on annotation text shouldn't bite — those have pointer-events none. OK. Also `touch-action: none`? For mobile taps, pointerdown works; prevent double-fire zoom — fine. 5. Adding bite: ``` const blob = blobPath(bcx,bcy,r); // mask hole const hole = appended to biteHoles // flesh: visible blob = blob clipped by appleClip AND we want it not to overlay previous flesh weirdly — fine to just add blob fill flesh color into fleshGroup (clipped to appleClip). Overlaps with previous holes are just flesh-on-flesh, invisible seam? The wound-edge outline of each bite would cross old bites showing edges inside flesh — actually charming: overlapping bite edges look organic. But edge outline (darker) on old flesh over new flesh might look like ridges — keep outlines subtle (opacity .5, 1.5px). OK. // wound detail group: // - blob with fill #F6EDD8 // - inner shadow: same blob scaled ~0.9 toward top-left? Simpler: stroke inside: draw blob path with fill none, stroke #C9A876 opacity .55 width 2.5, clipped by the blob itself (so stroke only inside)? Use clipPath per bite or just draw blob with stroke and rely on apple clip: stroke straddles edge; outer half covered by apple mask? The mask hides apple where hole is — stroke drawn in fleshGroup which is NOT masked, so its outer half (in eaten area) is visible — that's fine actually: a darker rim around the flesh = wound edge. Keep stroke #C89F6B, opacity .5, width 2. // - inner shadow crescent top: ellipse or arc: draw blob shifted down-right by 3 with fill #D8BE8E opacity .5 UNDER the main flesh blob? order: shadowBlob (offset +3,+3, fill darker) then main blob on top → crescent visible on top-left inner edge. Do that: gives concave depth. ✔ // - a couple flesh speckle dots? skip. ``` Also after bite: small "juice glint"? skip. Keep clean. Animate the bite: new flesh blob scale-in? A bite appearing instantly with a crunch is fine, but a tiny pop (scale from 1.15→1 with quick ease, transform-origin at bite center, 120ms) adds tactility. Blob path scale: wrap in ``. CSS animation transform: scale(1.18)→1, opacity 0→1, 140ms ease-out. Also apply same to mask hole? Mask hole pop isn't needed (apple beneath is static) — but if flesh pops bigger→normal while mask hole is full-size, the apple mask is already cut — fine, the flesh just grows into the hole. Actually pop from smaller (0.8→1) reads better (bite takes a chunk: flesh appears as chunk removed — the flesh reveal itself is the wound; slight overshoot scale .85→1.05→1? Keep simple: scale .7→1 + fade, 160ms). Also could animate the mask hole radius over 100ms — the apple edge receding as teeth sink — that's the juicy detail! Animate the hole path? Path morph is complex; instead put hole blob inside a `` in the mask and animate its transform scale 0→1 (transform-origin bite center) over 110ms — the apple visually "loses" the chunk with the same pop. Mask content transform animation works (CSS transforms on SVG elements inside mask — should work in modern browsers; mask content repainted). I'll do scale from 0.25→1, easing cubic-bezier(.3,1.4,.5,1). Risk: some browsers might not animate inside mask smoothly, but even a snap is acceptable. I'll set both. Hmm wait — transform-origin inside mask with userSpaceOnUse: use `transform-box: fill-box`? For a path element, `transform-origin: center` with `transform-box: fill-box` works. I'll add class and inline style with transform-origin coordinates in px (works with default view-box origin? CSS transform-origin on SVG elements is relative to the viewBox origin by default (transform-box: view-box). Setting explicit px values matching user units works if transform-box is view-box... the g inside mask — safe approach: animate scale on the g with style="transform-origin: {cx}px {cy}px" and default transform-box: view-box — since these coords are user units in that space, should be fine. I've done this pattern; it works in Chrome/FF/Safari for SVG children when specified in px user units. OK. 6. Core reveal: - Condition met → `finishApple()`: disable further bites (state='done'), quick final fade: appleWhole + fleshGroup animate opacity→0 (400ms), ground shadow shrinks to rx 46 & moves? Core stands center; shadow stays small under core (cx 360, cy 512, rx 60). - coreGroup (in scene coords; local translate(40,0) same frame): fade in + slight rise (translateY 8→0). Core drawn: - body path: let me design in local coords (center 320): core spans x 255–385 (width 130), y 200–470. Core shape (classic eaten-apple core): silhouette like two vertical lobes; top rounded where stem enters, waist pinch mid-low, bottom ragged/torn. Path (local coords): ``` M 320 205 C 348 202, 372 218, 378 246 (right top lobe) C 384 276, 380 306, 366 330 (right side inward) C 356 348, 354 362, 362 386 (waist out) C 372 412, 376 440, 362 458 (lower right flare) ... torn bottom: small zigzag to left ... C 350 468, 336 460, 330 448 C 326 456, 318 458, 312 450 C 304 462, 290 464, 282 452 C 270 438, 268 414, 276 390 (lower left) C 284 366, 284 350, 274 332 C 262 308, 258 278, 264 248 C 270 220, 294 205, 320 205 Z ``` Something like that — an hourglass with lobes. Fill: linear gradient vertical #F3E7C9 → #E7D3A8. - vertical fibers: ~10 paths stroke #D3BC8C opacity .5–.8, slightly wavy vertical lines within core (clip to core path with clipPath coreClip). - inner edge shading: stroke the path with #C7A96F opacity .35 width 3? and darker on right side (shadow side): offset dark blob overlay. - seed pocket: center at (320, 330): pointed-oval (lens) path height ~95, width ~34, fill #E8D6AC stroke #B98F52 opacity .6; actually the seed cavity visible as vertical slit: fill #C9A25B (darker). Then two seeds: teardrop at (313, 315) rotate -8 and (328, 345) rotate 8: path `M0,-14 C6,-6 6,6 0,13 C-6,6 -6,-6 0,-14` fill #4A2C17 with highlight ellipse #7A4E2B small at top. - stem: reuse stem path — but stem is inside masked appleWhole which faded out. So core group includes its own stem + leaf copy. I'll define stem+leaf as a `` in defs and `` twice (in appleWhole and coreGroup). ✔ - bottom raggedness + slight asymmetry good. - Also the top of core around stem: darker cavity ring: small radial dark at (320,210). - Caption: HTML overlay near bottom of stage: `.core-caption` with Fraunces italic "What's left is the idea." + mono line "5 seeds preserved · press grow to replant". Fade/slide in. Plus the "Grow another" button also in left column? Put the grow button inside the caption block under the stage — but on mobile fine. Alternatively swap: the "grow" button appears in left column replacing...? Simplest: caption block under apple center-bottom inside stage, absolutely positioned (desktop) — could collide with annotations; place at bottom center of stage with paper-colored backing? Text over paper anyway. Fine: position absolute bottom 4% center, text-align center. On core reveal, also maybe annotations 01–03 fade out (they describe the whole apple) — keep 04 "the bite" pointing at core waist: update to "the core — the idea remains". Nice: annotation labels 01–03 fade to 0.25 opacity (still ghosted), annotation 04 retargets to core seed pocket with text "the core — five seeds, one plan". 7. Stats updates & status words: statuses by bites: 0 "INTACT", 1–2 "TASTED", 3–5 "PICKED AT", 6+ "DISASSEMBLED", done → "GONE (CORE KEPT)". Weight: start 182g, minus per bite 16–30 → done sets remaining ~ "38 g (core)". Diameter: 78 − bites*7 mm floor 30. Crunch shows "—" then dB. Sweetness 13.4 decreasing 0.2–0.5 per bite floor 6. Bites count. Tally grows. Number pulse: add class 'tick' to changed `
Tally SVG: width flexible; each stroke: line x=i*9 (within group of 5: 4 verticals + diagonal), y 2–20, stroke ink 2px, rotate jitter ±4°, added per bite. Cap display at, say, 25 (3 groups) — bites max ~9 anyway. Place under spec or beside. 9. Sound toggle: button with two inline SVGs (on/off), toggling `muted`. Position: absolute top-right of stage or fixed top-right page. Fixed top-right with mono label "SOUND ON/OFF"? icon-only cleaner: 36px circular border button. Do icon + tiny label under? Just icon with aria-label, title tooltip. Fine. 10. Hint: absolutely positioned near apple bottom-left: mono text "← no wait, click the apple — take a bite" with a small hand-drawn arrow pointing to apple's lower-left edge. Draw arrow as inline SVG path (curved with arrowhead) in ink, slight rotate. After first bite: fade out hint. Also hint should only show pre-bite. Arrow direction: hint placed left of apple pointing right: text "click to take a bite" then arrow "→" curve. I'll draw a curved arrow SVG: path M0,20 C 20,0 40,0 58,8 with arrowhead lines. Place pointing toward apple. 11. Reset ("grow another"): on click: state='whole'; remove bite holes/flesh children; reset stats; core caption fade out; coreGroup fade out; appleWhole/flesh fade back in with pop (appleRoot animate scale .92→1, opacity); leaf unfurl: animate leaf group scale 0→1 rotate -30→0 with springy CSS; re-enable clicks; shadow restore; annotations restore; hint maybe re-show briefly? no. Leaf unfurl on first load too: page load animation: apple fades in scale .96→1, leaf unfurls after 300ms, annotations draw in (leader lines: stroke-dashoffset animation; labels fade). Title/lede: gentle rise-in with slight stagger (CSS keyframes with animation-delay). All quick (<1s total) — instant impression, not sluggish. Annotation line draw: give each leader polyline a dash animation on load & when annotation 04 appears. Simple CSS: `stroke-dasharray: 300; stroke-dashoffset: 300 → 0; transition or animation`. 12. Page load details: - Paper grain: `` background + an SVG turbulence overlay div (pointer-events none, opacity .05, mix-blend multiply). Use inline SVG filter as background-image data URI? Put actual button in left column: appears at core state. Also maybe place under caption. I'll place under the spec list (left column) — visible without hunting. Hmm wait, during whole state that slot is empty → fine (reserved space, fades in). **Sound toggle placement:** fixed top-right within frame: top 28 right 28. Circle 40px border ink; icon 18px. Toggle swaps icon paths & label attr. **Title sizing:** clamp(56px, 9vw, 120px). Line 1 "The" small? Design: "The Apple." single line; maybe stacked: "The" / "Apple." with italic. I'll do two lines: line1 "The" (lighter, smaller, with a long em-dash?), line2 "Apple." — more editorial. E.g.: ``` The Apple. ``` with "The" at 0.5em, italic, muted? Hmm. Alternative single line "The Apple." nowrap overflowing — bold statement. I'll go stacked: - line 1: "The" — Fraunces 300 italic, ~0.42× size, ink muted. - line 2: "Apple." — Fraunces 600, WONK on, huge. This gives a strong lockup. Then lede below. Left column contents order: kicker (top, maybe above title across the top of page instead)... Layout plan final (desktop): ``` page frame fixed: sound toggle (top right), corner marks grid container (min-height 100svh, padding 56px 48px): grid-template-columns: minmax(320px,440px) 1fr; gap 24px; align-items:center; left col: kicker, title, lede, spacer, spec, grow button right col: stage (svg) height min(82vh, 700px), caption overlay bottom footer fixed? no — footer inside grid bottom spanning: use grid rows: main row 1fr, footer row auto. ``` Grid: `grid-template-rows: 1fr auto; grid-template-columns: ...`; footer spans both columns row 2. ✔ Mobile: single column; order: kicker, title, lede, stage (60vh), spec, footer. Annotations inside svg shrink; maybe hide annotation labels' second lines on small? They scale with SVG — at 90vw wide (~360px), svg 760 → scale 0.47 → 11px text → 5px: unreadable. Option: on narrow screens, set svg viewBox wider? Alternative: annotations as HTML overlays positioned in % — but leader lines need coords... Compromise: on small screens, increase SVG text size? Media-query can't easily restyle inside svg... it CAN: CSS applies to inline SVG! `@media (max-width:700px){ #annotations text{font-size:16px} }` — bump annotation font so scaled-down stays ≥8px: at scale .47, 16px→7.5px still small. Could bump to 20px→9.4px readable-ish. Also shorten labels on mobile? Simplest: accept smaller, bump to 18px & tighten. Also stage on mobile can be wider relative (svg min(100vw-32, ...)). It'll be fine — annotation labels are secondary; main content legible. Also viewport height mobile: use min-height 100svh with fallback 100vh. **JS init sequence:** - build speckles, tally, wire events. - entry animations via CSS classes on load (body.loaded → transitions). Use small JS to add classes after fonts? Just window load / DOMContentLoaded + rAF. **Bite counter cap:** ensure core triggers: condition when (tsil < 46) or (noPlacement). With r = clamp(0.5*tsil,26,50): when tsil=60 → r=30, tb found maybe 55 with frac ok. Next tsil maybe 44 → triggers core. Probably 6–8 bites. Also hard cap: if bites==12 force core. Also guard: if user clicks far from apple (dist>300 from center scene(360,330)) → do nothing (or tiny toast "aim closer" — skip, just ignore... better: gently wiggle hint? If hint visible, pulse it. If not, ignore.) Also prevent bite when state != whole. During core, clicking apple: pulse caption. **Edge: clicking during entry animation** — allow, harmless. **Crunch + stats wiring done.** Also update ground shadow: after each bite rx = max(60, 150 − bites*9), and at core 64. **Annotation 04 leader re-target:** each bite: set its polyline points & dot to last bite center (scene coords = local +40). Label position: bite.cx(local)>320 → label left (x 18) else right (x ~600). y 560. Update text "04 — BITE Nº {n}". Leader path: M labelEdge 556 H elbow... draw: from (labelX+side, 556) horizontal 40px toward apple, then line to bite point. Compute in JS with string. Dash animation restart: set style stroke-dasharray/offset & force reflow → animate. I'll implement small helper. Wait — annotation 04 label near bottom might collide with footer or caption; y 560 in svg, svg bottom 640, caption is HTML below/over bottom center of stage… caption at bottom of stage overlaying svg lower area (y ~ 560–620 region of svg space). Conflict with a4 at y 560! Move a4 to y 600? Caption centered horizontally; a4 on left or right side — caption is centered, width ~ 300px; a4 label at far left (x18) with text extending ~150px — probably clear of centered caption. Set caption max-width 340 centered; a4 at x 18 left could still overlap on narrow. On core reveal I could fade a4 into the caption anyway (a4 becomes "the core" note) — then a4 text changes to "04 — CORE / the plan survives" pointing to core center; caption sits at bottom center; a4 y=600 left side. Risk small overlap; set caption background: paper (bg color) with padding so overlap is clean if any. ✔ Or simply place caption not in stage but in left column replacing lede? Hmm — caption under apple is more theatrical. Keep with paper backing. Also during eating, caption hidden. **Grow button behavior + leaf regrow:** restart CSS animation by removing/adding class with void reflow. **Now — colors of accents in UI:** status words in accent red? dd default ink; changed values flash red. Kicker has a red "Nº 001"? Small red square/rule as brand mark? A tiny apple-silhouette glyph next to kicker (mini SVG 10px apple in red) — cute logo for the study. Yes: tiny apple pictogram before kicker text. Draw simple mini apple path scaled. **Write the copy fully:** Kicker: `DESIGN STUDY Nº 001 · MALUS DOMESTICA` Title: The / Apple. Lede: "Eighty million years of quiet iteration. No roadmap, no focus group — just pigment, sugar, and a stem shaped to the human hand. Presented below in what I believe is its final form. It ships with exactly one interactive feature:" then italic red: "you may bite it." Hmm — refine: "It has no manual, because it has one feature:" → punchier: Lede final: "Eighty million years in development. No pitch, no roadmap — just pigment, sugar, and a stem fitted to the human hand. What follows is the production model, annotated. It ships with a single feature:" + em "you may bite it." Core caption: big: "What's left is the idea." mono: "CORE PRESERVED · 5 SEEDS VIABLE · NOTHING WASTED" + button appears in left column "GROW ANOTHER". Footer: "DESIGN STUDY Nº 001 — SET IN FRAUNCES & SPACE MONO · CRUNCH SYNTHESIZED LIVE IN WEB AUDIO · NO APPLE WAS HARMED: IT REGROWS" Sound toggle title: "sound on/off". Hint text: "click the apple — take a bite" with arrow. **Accessibility:** buttons with aria-labels; role noted; keyboard: apple bite via keyboard? Add: pressing "B" or Enter when stage focused? Nice-to-have: make svg focusable (tabindex=0) & keydown Enter/Space → bite at random edge angle. I'll add: svg tabindex 0, aria-label "The apple — press Enter to take a bite", keydown handler. Small touch, cheap. **Now write the actual code.** I need to be meticulous with SVG coordinates. Hmm: `` with internal classes & CSS animations — styles apply to shadow content via CSS? CSS selectors do NOT match inside use shadow DOM (except inheritance). Leaf unfurl via CSS class won't reach inside ``. Workaround: define stemLeaf group as a real `` used in appleWhole, and for core, duplicate the markup (JS clone or literal copy). Simplest: write stem+leaf as a function string / or just literal duplicated markup with different id (stemLeaf2). I'll duplicate literal (small). The unfurl animation: apply to both via class .leafInner — CSS matches real elements ✔ (both are real, no use/shadow). For reset re-animation: remove class .unfurl from both, reflow, re-add. ✔ Similarly initial. Actually also apple body shading is complex; core needs its own — fine, written separately. **Mask config:** `` — but content is in apple-local coords (translated parent). Expand svg width dynamically (set width attr = groups*44+40). **Crunch audio refined:** also slight rate variation & stereo pan by bite x? pan = (bx−320)/320*0.6 via StereoPannerNode (guard existence). Nice spatial detail! Also small "bite resistance" visual: appleRoot quick squash? A tiny scale wobble on bite: appleRoot class .munch (keyframes: scale(0.985) skew? subtle 90ms) → adds physicality. Add transform-box fill-box origin center. Careful: appleRoot already has attribute transform translate(40,0) — CSS transform would override it! Danger: overriding translate breaks position. Solution: wrap another inner group #appleSquash inside appleRoot for CSS wobble with transform-box:fill-box; transform-origin:center. ✔ Same for .pop grow animation → apply to appleSquash too. **CSS entry animations:** .rise{opacity:0; transform:translateY(14px); transition: opacity .7s ease, transform .7s cubic-bezier(.2,.8,.2,1)} body.in .rise{opacity:1; transform:none} with per-element transition-delay via inline style or nth. Apply to kicker, title, lede, spec, stage svg (svg .rise), footer. JS adds body.in on load (+50ms). Leader lines draw-in: class .draw on polylines: stroke-dasharray: var set via JS (getTotalLength) → dashoffset → transition to 0 when body.in & annotation visible. Simpler: CSS `stroke-dasharray:240; stroke-dashoffset:240; transition: stroke-dashoffset .8s ease .5s; body.in → 0`. Length varies but 240 covers most; if line longer, part visible initially — acceptable. Or JS set precisely. I'll do JS precise: for each .leader: L=path.getTotalLength(); set dasharray=L, offset=L; then requestAnimationFrame set offset 0 with transition. For dynamically created a4 leader, same on create (small delay). Since polylines: getTotalLength works on polyline? It's a geometry element — yes, SVGGeometryElement includes polyline. ✔ Dots/labels fade in with transition delay .8s. **Sound icon:** speaker: `` (material-ish volume) + waves arcs `M16 8.5a5 5 0 0 1 0 7`/second arc; muted: same speaker + X lines `M16 9l6 6M22 9l-6 6`. Use stroke style icons: draw with stroke ink 1.8 round. I'll hand-write minimal stroke icon: on: polygon speaker + one arc; off: speaker + slash. ok. **Grain overlay:** fixed svg 100% with turbulence — performance ok static. Use width/height 100%, rect filter. Add `opacity:.05; mix-blend-mode:multiply`. Also body background maybe very slight vignette? skip — paper + grain + frame enough. **Page frame:** .frame{position:fixed; inset:14px; border:1px solid rgba(28,25,23,.22); pointer-events:none; z-index:50}. Crop marks: pseudo elements can't do 4 corners easily on one div — use 4 spans or a fixed svg. Simpler: 4 corner divs .crop with borders: each 12px lines extending outward from frame corners: e.g., top-left: two lines: horizontal at y=14 extending left beyond viewport? Crop marks typically outside the trim; decorative here: small ticks: `.crop{position:fixed; width:10px;height:10px; pointer-events:none}` with borders: tl: border-left+border-top at inset 6px? Eh — simpler skip crop marks; frame + typography is enough. Actually tiny crop marks add print charm cheaply: I'll add 4 fixed spans: each an L using two absolutely positioned 1px divs? Use span with `border-top:1px solid; border-left:1px solid;` positioned at corners slightly outside frame (inset 8px), size 8px, only two borders → looks like registration corner. Hmm these read as "corner ticks". Fine: inset 8, size 9, borders per corner, opacity .35. Do it. z-index: frame above content but pointer-events none ✔; sound toggle z above frame. **Title overlap:** title width may exceed left column (440px): "Apple." at ~120px Fraunces 600: approx width = 6 chars×~0.62em ≈ 450px + period… roughly 460–500px. Column 440 → slight overflow into stage gap ✔ (no wrap: white-space nowrap on .t2). Overflow visible; grid column overflow — ensure parent doesn't clip (overflow visible default) and no z-index issues (title above? svg is to the right; overlap region only if title extends into svg box horizontally: svg starts after column+gap; "Apple." ~500px vs 440 col → extends ~60px into 24px gap + svg left edge which is empty paper in svg (apple starts at scene x≈200 of 760 → at typical stage width ~700px, apple left edge ≈ 200/760×700 ≈ 184px into svg box) → no visual collision ✔. Caption HTML overlay above svg (position absolute; svg is in normal flow) ✔ pointer-events none so bites still work beneath? Caption at bottom over svg lower area — clicks there would hit caption div if it has pointer-events; set none ✔. **Sound engine detail:** ``` let actx=null; function ensureAudio(){ if(!actx){ try{actx=new (window.AudioContext||window.webkitAudioContext)();}catch(e){} } if(actx&&actx.state==='suspended') actx.resume(); } function crunch(x){ // x: 0..1 pan if(state.muted) return; ensureAudio(); if(!actx) return; const t=actx.currentTime+0.008; const out=actx.createGain(); out.gain.value=0.9; let node=out; if(actx.createStereoPanner){const p=actx.createStereoPanner(); p.pan.value=(x-0.5)*1.0; out.connect(p); p.connect(actx.destination);} else out.connect(actx.destination); const mk=(gain,dur,freq,q,delay,type='bandpass')=>{ const n=Math.floor(actx.sampleRate*dur), buf=actx.createBuffer(1,n,actx.sampleRate), d=buf.getChannelData(0); for(let i=0;i` — user space of the path = after ancestor transforms? SVGGeometryElement.isPointInFill: "point in the user coordinate system of the element" — the element's user space is established by its ancestors including the g translate → actually the point passed is in the path's own user space, i.e., the coordinate system *before* its own transform but *after* ancestors'?? Careful: An element's user space = coordinate system in which its geometry is defined = after applying all ancestor transforms to the viewport... no: ancestor transforms map local coords to screen. The element's user space is its local coordinate system (the same space its `d` is expressed in) — ancestor transforms are applied on top of that when rendering. So a point in the path's user space = local coords (what I want: untranslated local coords since path has no own transform) ✔. So pass local coords (x−40 already handled since I do bite math in local). Good — I'll do all bite math in local coords and add 40 only for scene-positioned annotation targets. But careful: my click conversion gives scene coords (viewBox). local = scene − 40 in x. ✔ **Annotation 04 initial:** group hidden (opacity 0). After first bite: show with draw-in; update per bite. **Leader update for a4:** elements: ``, ``, ``, ``. Position: ``` const bx=b.cx+40, by=b.cy; // scene if(bx<=360){ label side left: t1 x=20 y=590; t2 y=606; line: `20? start after text: fixed 132,596 H 170 L bx,by` → polyline points "132,596 176,596 bx,by" } else { t1 x=740 text-anchor=end? mixing anchors... use anchor start x=600? text lengths: "04 — BITE Nº 3" ~ 14 chars × 6.6px ≈ 95px → 600+95=695 ✔. line start "596,596 556,596 bx,by". ``` Wait right-side leader starting x 596 < label x 600 ✔ (line begins just left of label). Dot at bite center r 3.5 stroke red fill none? Make a4 accent red (the bite = the feature) — line & dot red, label t1 red? t1 ink, dot red filled. Choose: dot fill var(--red) r 3; line ink .45. ok. For core mode a4: label "04 — CORE", t2 "the plan survives", target (360, 344) scene (seed pocket local 320,344 → scene 360) — dot at core center; side: label right side (bite earlier irrelevant): use right variant with bx=360... line from (596,596 → 556,596 → 360,344) crosses apple core region bottom-right — fine. But wait if final bite was on right side, a4 label is already right — continuity ✔. Also for the very final bite that triggers finish(): update a4 to that bite first, then finish() re-targets to core. OK. **Fraunces axes:** request wght range in URL as above with opsz auto; set h1 { font-variation-settings:'opsz' 144,'SOFT' 30,'WONK' 1 } — need axes in the font request: Fraunces variable includes SOFT/WONK only if requested: URL with `Fraunces:ital,opsz,SOFT,WONK,wght@...`? Google Fonts supports requesting additional axes: `family=Fraunces:ital,opsz,SOFT,WONK,wght@0,9..144,0..100,0..1,300..700;1,...` — axis order must be alphabetical: ital, opsz, SOFT, WONK, wght — actually lowercase before uppercase? Google requires axes sorted: lowercase first alphabetically then uppercase? The rule: alphabetical, lowercase first (ital, opsz, wght are lowercase; SOFT, WONK uppercase) — order: ital,opsz,wght then uppercase SOFT,WONK? Official rule: "sort alphabetically, with lowercase first". So: ital, opsz, wght, SOFT, WONK. Tuple values correspondingly. Getting this wrong → 400 error → font fallback. To be safe, skip SOFT/WONK in request and just use default variable font with opsz (default request `ital,opsz,wght` includes opsz range; WONK defaults 0, SOFT 0). I'll request `Fraunces:ital,opsz,wght@0,9..144,300..700;1,9..144,300..700` and use font-variation-settings 'opsz' only (or none — opsz auto by size). WONK would've been nice ("wonky" alternates) but risk isn't worth it. Actually let me try including SOFT/WONK properly: format: `family=Fraunces:ital,opsz,wght,SOFT,WONK@0,9..144,300..700,0..100,0..1;1,9..144,300..700,0..100,0..1`. Per Google Fonts docs, ordering is alphabetical with lowercase axes first: ital, opsz, wght, SOFT, WONK ✔ and tuples list values in same order. I believe this is correct (I've seen this pattern work). But a malformed URL kills typography entirely. Compromise: load base Fraunces (ital,opsz,wght) — reliable — and skip SOFT/WONK. Fine: rely on opsz 144 + italic for character. Space Mono: `Space+Mono:ital,wght@0,400;0,700;1,400`. **Icon injection check for tastefulness:** sound icon only. ✔ No emoji anywhere (copy uses "·" and "—" fine). **Potential pitfall:** mask + CSS animation of hole transform: In Safari, animating transform of elements inside `` sometimes doesn't repaint. Fallback harmless (instant). Keep pop only on flesh; mask hole pop via same technique — if it fails, bite appears instantly — acceptable. Actually to guarantee consistency, animate BOTH flesh and hole with same timing; worst case both instant. Also `transform-box: view-box` default for SVG (CSS spec default is view-box for SVG). transform-origin in px then is relative to viewBox origin — but our holes live inside translate(40) group in LOCAL coords; CSS transform-origin px are in the element's local user space? With transform-box: view-box, origin is relative to the nearest SVG viewport's view box... hmm that would be scene coords ≠ local. To avoid mess: set style.transformOrigin = `${cx}px ${cy}px` — with default transform-box (view-box), origin measured from viewBox origin — but the element is inside a translated group; CSS transforms on SVG elements compose with... The CSS `transform` property replaces the element's transform, and origin is resolved in the element's local coordinate system? Honestly: For SVG elements, CSS transform-origin with `transform-box: view-box` uses the nearest viewport coordinates... The safe approach: give hole `` its own transform attribute? Can't animate attribute via CSS. Alternative reliable approach: wrap hole path in `` and set the g's CSS `transform: translate(cx,cy) scale(s) translate(-cx,-cy)` keyframes — fully self-contained, no transform-origin ambiguity! Keyframes with three transforms: from `translate(cx,cy) scale(.2) translate(-cx,-cy)` to `translate(cx,cy) scale(1) translate(-cx,-cy)`. But keyframes are static in CSS — need per-bite dynamic keyframes → define with Web Animations API: `el.animate([...], {duration:150, easing:'cubic-bezier(.3,1.4,.5,1)'})` — WAAPI on SVG g works everywhere modern ✔ and no CSS var needed per bite: ``` const tr=(s)=>`translate(${cx}px,${cy}px) scale(${s}) translate(${-cx}px,${-cy}px)`; g.animate([{transform:tr(0.3), opacity:0.6},{transform:tr(1), opacity:1}],{duration:160,easing:'cubic-bezier(.25,1.4,.45,1)'}); ``` WAAPI animate on SVG elements: supported ✔. Use for: hole g, flesh g, and appleSquash wobble, caption transitions can stay CSS. Similarly leaf unfurl: CSS transitions with transform-box:fill-box — widely supported ✔ (fill-box supported in all modern). Keep CSS for leaf. appleSquash: WAAPI: `squash.animate([{transform:'scale(1)'},{transform:'scale(1.02,0.98)'},{transform:'scale(1)'}],{duration:180})` with transform-origin issue again → use translate trick around center (320,336): tr(sx,sy)=`translate(320,336) scale(sx,sy) translate(-320,-336)`; but CSS transform units on SVG: plain numbers allowed? In WAAPI transform strings, use px units to be safe: `translate(320px,336px) scale(1.02,0.98) translate(-320px,-336px)` ✔. Note appleSquash is INSIDE translate(40) group so local coords correct ✔. grow pop similar. fade-outs: CSS transitions on opacity for groups ✔ (appleWhole, fleshGroup, coreGroup, caption...). **One more design consideration — the empty right column on mobile:** fine. **Also:** prevent text selection on rapid clicking apple: user-select none on stage & svg; touch-action manipulation on svg (avoid dbl-tap zoom). Let me now also verify flesh rendering when bite overlaps another bite's flesh: new flesh blob drawn over old flesh: includes its inner-shadow crescent (offset darker blob under main) — over old flesh, the shadow crescent might paint darker over existing flesh along new bite's top-left edge — actually correct-ish (new wound edge casts subtle shadow) fine. Rim stroke over old flesh ok. But the crescent technique: draw order within bite group: (1) shadow blob (translate +2.5,+2.5? crescent should appear at top-left inside → shadow blob shifted down-right, main blob on top covers most, leaving crescent at top-left) ✔ (2) main flesh blob (3) rim stroke on main blob. Shadow blob color #D9BE8C; flesh #F5ECD7; rim stroke #C29A66 opacity .55 width 2. Also add subtle darker core-line? enough. Also — since fleshGroup is clipped by appleClip, bites near silhouette get flat straight clip edge — correct look ✔. **Numbers pulse & stat formatting** straightforward. **Status thresholds:** 0 INTACT; 1 TASTED; 2–3 "PICKED AT"; 4–6 "DISASSEMBLED"; 7+ "CRITICAL"; core: "GONE — CORE KEPT". fun. Also crunch row pre-first-bite: "—". **Write final HTML now.** I'll be thorough but organized. Also add ``. Title tag: "The Apple — Design Study Nº 001". CSS variables: ``` --paper:#F2EDE2; --ink:#211D18; --muted:#6E6558; --red:#B3301D; --red-deep:#7E1B15; --hair: rgba(33,29,24,.16); ``` Fraunces classes: .serif{font-family:'Fraunces',serif}. Let me write out all SVG defs concretely: ```svg ``` Note: gradients with cx/cy in objectBoundingBox of the ellipse elements they fill — since I position via element geometry, gradient cx .5 default ok; bodyG applied to the body path: bounding box of apple path (local x160–480,y148–493): cx .35 cy .28 → highlight upper-left ✔. Blur filters: on sheen & shadow & cavity. Filter region defaults may clip — set generous x/y/width/height ✔ as above. Apple markup: ```svg ... ... ... ``` Wait: stemLeaf must NOT be clipped (extends above apple) — it's outside the clip group but inside masked group ✔ mask only cuts where bite holes are; bites constrained away from stem — mostly ✔ (bite direction up: tsil from center to top edge ~ (336−160)=176... bite could cut into stem base area if user clicks top. The stem base local (321,168) — distance from center (320,336) ≈ 168; a bite at tsil=176 with r up to 50 centered (320,160): reaches y 110–210 → stem occupies x≈321–346 y 86–168: hole circle around (320,160) r50 would erase stem base chunk (mask applies to appleWhole incl stemLeaf). Visually: bite at top eats into stem — actually plausible (you bite around stem). But hole might erase most of stem → looks odd but acceptable; r limited by tsil*0.5=88? no r=min(50, tsil*0.5)=50 with tsil 176. Hole at (320,160) r~50: stem base inside → stem visually cut at y~210..110 gap? stem spans 86–168, hole covers 110–210 fully covering stem portion 110–168 → stem appears only above y110: floating short stem — weird but honestly reads like a bite near the stem. To reduce weirdness: exclude upward direction from bites? If dir.y < -0.75 (strongly up) → rotate direction to nearest side: dir = normalize with y clamped ≥ −0.75? Simpler: if normalized dir y < −0.72, set dir y = −0.72 & renormalize — bites near top become top-diagonal ✔ stem mostly safe. Do that.) Leaf at local (344,90), scene (384,90) — top area, bites can't reach (holes y≥ ~ (160+?)... tsil max ~ down? top tsil 176 → bite center y ≥ 160+? with dir clamp y≥−0.72 → center y ≥ 336−0.72*tsil... at tsil176: y=336−127=209; r50 → top of hole 159 < leaf 90 ✔ leaf safe. **Annotation markup:** ```svg 01 — STEM fits the hand 02 — BLUSH ripeness, managed 03 — HIGHLIGHT one fixed sun ``` Check a2 label: x596 "02 — BLUSH" 10 chars*7 ≈ 75 → 671 ✔; "ripeness, managed" 17 chars ×6.3(12px mono=7.2px/char; 12px Space Mono advance ≈ 7.2) ≈ 122 → 718 ✔ tight but ok (frame at right edge of page, svg edge not page edge; page has padding 48 + frame 14 — svg right edge is inside content area, fine). Wait — ann1 leader crosses apple top-left region: from (172,84) to (376,116): passes over apple? Apple top at scene y~150+, this line stays above (y 84→116) ✔ nice. Dot at (380,118) — that's just left of stem (stem scene x 361–386, y 86–168): dot at (380,118) ON the stem. Move dot to (372,124)? stem path at y=124 has x≈325 local=365 scene. Dot at (384,120)? near stem right side. It's fine — dot marks the stem ✔ put (374,122). a3: (288,242) dot — apple left-top area scene (apple spans scene x200–520) → dot inside apple over highlight ✔ (highlight scene center ≈ 292,230) ✔. ann3 label y 286–302 at x20: apple left edge scene at y~290 is x≈206 — label ends ~x20+13chars*7=111 → clear ✔. **Core markup:** ```svg paths... same duplicate of stemLeaf ``` Seed pocket before seeds: ` g#coreInner. Transition opacity .6s, transform .6s; hidden: opacity 0, translateY(10px); shown: opacity1, none. ✔ Similarly appleWhole fade-out: opacity transition on #appleWhole & #fleshG ✔ (no transforms on them). **stemLeaf group content:** ```svg ``` Leaf points right-down rotated -36 from (344,92): shape extends +x → after rotate(-36): direction up-right ✔. Leaf spans local x 344–430ish, y ~20–92 → scene up to 470 — ann2 label at y154 x596 — clear ✔. Top: leaf top y ~ 92−86*sin36≈ 92−50=42? points (86,−2) rotated −36: x'=86cos−(−2)(−sin)= 86*.809−(−2)(.588)*? rotate(−36): x' = x cosθ + y sinθ with θ=−36: cos=.809, sin=−.588: x' = 86*.809 + (−2)(−.588)=69.6+1.2=70.8; y' = −x sinθ + y cosθ = 86*.588 + (−2)(.809)=50.6−1.6=49. So tip at (344+71, 92−49)=(415,43) local → scene (455,43) ✔ within viewBox ✔. **Streaks:** static 4 paths e.g. `M262 200 C256 270 260 360 268 440` etc stroke #7E1618 opacity .12 width 7 fill none linecap round; and 2 lighter #E8A468 opacity .18 near blush. 5–6 total. **Speckles:** JS generated ~26 light + 10 dark with seeded PRNG, test insideApple && dist from highlight center (252,229) > 60. **Leader CSS:** .leader{fill:none; stroke:var(--ink); stroke-opacity:.4; stroke-width:1} .leader.red{stroke:var(--red); stroke-opacity:.55} .dot{fill:var(--paper); stroke:var(--ink); stroke-width:1.2} .dotRed{fill:var(--red); stroke:none}. .a1{font:700 11px 'Space Mono'; letter-spacing:1.6px; fill:var(--ink)} .a2{font:italic 13px 'Fraunces'; fill:var(--muted)}. Draw-in: JS on load: for each .leader in .ann (not hidden): L=getTotalLength → dasharray/offset, then setTimeout/rAF add transition & offset 0. Labels & dots start opacity 0 → transition to 1 delay .55s. Implement: .ann .dot,.ann text{opacity:0; transition:opacity .5s ease .5s} body.in → 1. ann4 hidden: .hidden{opacity:0; pointer-events:none; visibility?} — but its draw handled on reveal: when revealing ann4, set dash & animate via WAAPI or transition: I'll set dasharray=L, offset L, force reflow, add class .drawn{stroke-dashoffset:0; transition:stroke-dashoffset .6s}. And remove .hidden (opacity 1 via class .shown with text opacity transition). Manage with utility classes & JS. For initial leaders, same .drawn approach with slight stagger (setTimeout i*120+400). Simplify: all leaders get dasharray=offset=L inline at init; then body.in triggers CSS transition to 0 — set transition on .leader {transition: stroke-dashoffset .9s cubic-bezier(.5,0,.2,1) .35s}. For ann4 later: on create set dasharray=L offset=L then rAF set offset 0 (transition applies — but transition delay .35s ok, and it also has the same big transition property) ✔. **Now the copy: also small red asterisk/apple glyph in kicker:** inline svg 11×12 mini apple: path scaled version — I'll just draw tiny: `` — cute mini apple with stem ✔. **HTML skeleton:** ```html
In takeBite, after addBite success we don't finish unless >=11; next click will trigger finish when sil small. But if user must click again when only tiny sliver remains... natural: silhouetteDist shrinks; when <50 → next click finishes ✔ good (user takes final "core" action). Maybe auto-finish earlier: if after adding, remaining est small (sil<55) also finish? Leave to next click — interactive drama of the last nibble ✔. But silhouette measure is of FULL apple path, not remaining. As bites remove chunks, the full path silhouette stays big! tsil measures original silhouette — problem: bite placement uses fracFree to avoid already-eaten, so functionally ok: bites keep chewing from edges; original silhouette stays ~170 for top directions. So natural "sil<50" may never trigger. Need remaining-based end condition: estimate remaining area = appleArea − Σ bite∩apple areas… complex. Alternative: track a crude "radius": after each bite, compute a sampled remaining count on a polar grid: sample K=200 points across apple bbox on grid, count insideApple && !insideAnyBite → remainingFraction. If <0.16 → finish (auto after that bite). Compute cost trivial. Also use remaining to scale bite radius: r = clamp(0.5*sil, 27,50) fine as is. Also better bite centering: fracFree handles overlap ✔. So: after addBite → if remainingFraction() < 0.17 → finish(). finish(): ``` state.mode='core'; appleWhole.classList.add('gone'); fleshG.classList.add('gone'); // opacity 0 transition .45s coreInner.classList.add('shown'); // delayed: setTimeout 300 add shown caption.classList.add('shown'); growBtn.classList.add('shown'); ann1..3 add .ghost; // ann4 core mode: a4t1.textContent='04 — CORE'; a4t2.textContent='the plan survives'; setA4Target(360,344, 'right'); // scene coords seed pocket stats: stMass='38 g'; stDia='core'; stStatus='GONE — CORE KEPT'; shadow: set rx 60, opacity .12 ``` .gone{opacity:0; transition:opacity .5s ease; pointer-events:none}. coreGroup pointer-events none anyway (whole svg handles clicks; mode guards). Just CSS .shown transitions. ``` Wait leader from left label: horizontal segment from x128 to 172 then diagonal to bite — if bite is up high (y 200), line goes from (172,596) to bite — crosses apple lower-left — fine. Also ann4 fixed y 588/604 near bottom; on mobile still inside svg ✔. pulseCaption: caption.animate slight scale/opacity blip. updateShadow(): shadow.setAttribute('rx', max(58,148-n*9)); on core: rx 60 & cy 512 & opacity .13. **blobPath seed randomness:** use Math.random fine. pop(g,x,y,scaleFrom): WAAPI as described: ``` function pop(g,x,y,from){ const t=(s)=>`translate(${x}px,${y}px) scale(${s}) translate(${-x}px,${-y}px)`; g.animate([{transform:t(from),opacity:.4},{transform:t(1),opacity:1}],{duration:170,easing:'cubic-bezier(.3,1.5,.5,1)'}); } ``` But g starts at scale 1 (no style) — animation only transient (fill none) → fine (pop visual then settles; at end returns to natural scale 1 ✔). wobble(): ``` appleSquash.animate([ {transform:'translate(320px,336px) scale(1,1) translate(-320px,-336px)'}, {transform:'translate(320px,336px) scale(1.025,0.982) translate(-320px,-336px)'}, {transform:'translate(320px,336px) scale(0.99,1.008) translate(-320px,-336px)'}, {transform:'translate(320px,336px) scale(1,1) translate(-320px,-336px)'} ],{duration:220,easing:'ease-out'}); ``` grow pop similar (0.94→1.02→1, 480ms, easing cubic-bezier(.3,1.4,.4,1)). hideHint(): hint.classList.add('off'). **fracFree:** ``` function fracFree(x,y,r){ let c=0; const N=18, rr=r*0.85; for(let i=0;i (s=(s*16807)%2147483647)/2147483647; let placed=0, tries=0; while(placed<34 && tries<400){ tries++; const x=166+rnd()*308, y=155+rnd()*330; if(!insideApple(x,y)) continue; if(Math.hypot(x-252,y-229)<62) continue; const r=0.7+rnd()*1.1, light=rnd()>0.3; const c=el('circle',{cx:x,cy:y,r, fill: light?'#F4C98F':'#701014', opacity: light? ` — nice functional wit ✔. Title kerning: "Apple." Fraunces 600 opsz auto at 120px — set font-variation-settings? Just rely on auto opsz (Fraunces variable auto opsz applies via font-optical-sizing:auto default ✔). Let me also reconsider lede copy final: "Eighty million years in development. No pitch, no roadmap — just pigment, sugar, and a stem fitted to the human hand. What follows is the production model, fully annotated. It ships with exactly one feature: *you may bite it.*" Good. em styled: .lede em{font-style:italic; color:var(--red)}. Also title aria: h1 fine. **Annotation text sizes bump on mobile:** @media(max-width:900px){ .a1{font-size:14px} .a2{font-size:15px} } → scaled at ~0.5 → ~7px hmm still small. Also could reduce viewBox? Alternative: on mobile scale whole scene bigger: #scene{width:118%; margin-left:-9%} to enlarge annotations (overflow hidden by frame? stage overflow visible, frame is fixed...). Let me: mobile #scene{width:min(112%, calc(64vh*1.1875))}? Just do width:104% margin-left:-2%. Combined with 14px fonts → ~8px effective. Acceptable; also caption font bump handled by clamp. Actually simpler mobile approach: allow stage to be ~100vw and svg width 100%; bump annotation fonts to 15/16px. ~8px rendered — readable enough for flavor text. OK. Also mobile: hint position left 2% bottom 6%. **Writing the final code now.** I'll aim for clean, commented (English comments), organized CSS. Roughly 600–700 lines total. Let me carefully compose. One concern: `mask` attribute on `#appleWhole` referencing `#biteMask` with maskUnits userSpaceOnUse x=-60... The mask content coords: I said local. The rect covering -60..840 x -60..840 covers apple local 160–480 ✔. Also WebKit: mask on g ✔. double-check pop() WAAPI transform strings on SVG ``: CSS transforms on SVG elements — translate with px units works (treated as user units) ✔. getScreenCTM on svg ✔. Let me also make sure the `finish()` fade: appleWhole & fleshG .gone class → transition opacity. Initially no transition needed... add `#appleWhole,#fleshG{transition:opacity .5s ease}`. coreGroup: `#coreInner{opacity:0; transform:translateY(12px); transition:opacity .6s ease .1s, transform .6s cubic-bezier(.2,.9,.3,1) .1s}` .shown → 1/none. **tally svg element**: `BITES0` — tCount numeric too? redundant; skip count, tally enough. Actually small numeric is nice for clarity: keep "BITES" label + tally. skip number. Label style .tLabel{font:700 10px mono; ls .18em; color:var(--muted)}. **Alright — also the initial "draw leaders" JS:** ``` function prepLeader(p){ const L=p.getTotalLength(); p.style.strokeDasharray=L; p.style.strokeDashoffset=L; } function playLeader(p){ p.style.transition='stroke-dashoffset .9s cubic-bezier(.55,0,.2,1)'; requestAnimationFrame(()=>p.style.strokeDashoffset='0'); } ``` init: qsa('#annotations .ann:not(.hidden) .leader').forEach(prepLeader); on load(+350ms) playLeader each staggered 130ms. Text/dots: CSS body.in .ann text,.dot opacity 1 delay .9s? Set transition-delay .8s. ann4 reveal: prep + play immediately with its own timing; plus texts opacity: ann4.hidden{opacity:0} ann4 default text opacity 0? Manage: #ann4 text,#ann4 circle{opacity:0; transition:opacity .4s} #ann4.shown text,#ann4.shown circle{opacity:1}. add .shown on reveal. And .hidden removed. Also ann1–3 .ghost{opacity:.28; transition:opacity .5s} applied to group ✔ (group opacity multiplies children ✔). **Sound button default:** state.muted=false. **Test mental pass of takeBite for first click at apple center (320+40=360,336 scene):** dist<6 → random dir. silhouette: binary search on insideApple: e.g., dir right: tsil 154. r=clamp(154*.55=84.7→ min 62)=62. fracFree at (474,336) r62: samples radius 52.7: points at x up to 526.7 — outside apple (edge 474) → those count false; roughly half inside fresh → ~0.5 ✔ ≥0.34 → spot at t=154. addBite at (474,336): flesh half-moon at right edge ✔ mask hole removes that region ✔ shadow rx 148−9=139. stats update. ann4: bx=514 scene → right side: label x598 y588; line 588,596 → 546,596 → 514,336: passes over apple right region ✔ fine (goes up-left from (546,596) to (514,336)) hmm that line is steep and crosses apple bottom-right — acceptable callout aesthetic. **Check bite fully inside previously bitten area case:** fracFree fails everywhere → fallback r*0.8 .15 → maybe passes somewhere inward; else finish — could prematurely finish if user keeps clicking into a hole. remainingFraction is the real gate; finish from failed placement might trigger while lots of apple remains elsewhere. Hmm: if placement fails, better to NOT finish but instead pick a random good spot anywhere: iterate random angles: for k in 0..40: a=rand; compute sil(a), try place; if found → bite there. That keeps it fun (apple gets eaten from wherever works). If still none → finish ✔. Implement: attemptPreferred(dir) else attempt scan 60 random dirs (deterministic-ish coverage) else finish. Silhouette binary search per dir ~24 isPointInFill calls; 60 dirs ×24×(frac 18) — 60*(24+18*~7 t-steps)… fracFree per t-step costs 18 samples each insideApple+bites → t-loop ~10 steps → 180 samples per dir → 60 dirs = 10800 insideApple calls worst case — isPointInFill is fast (native) but 10k might jank ~ms-level; fine (only worst case). Reduce dirs to 36. ok. Simpler alternative: precompute remaining samples grid once per bite and pick a cluster edge... overkill; go with scan. **Also**: after finish, pointerdown on svg calls pulseCaption — caption is pointer-events none but svg receives → pulse: caption.animate([{transform:'translate(-50%,0) scale(1)'},{...scale(1.02)}...]) — caption transform includes translateX(-50%) — WAAPI overrides; fine include translate in keyframes. Or pulse the h3 only (no translate). pulse h3 scale 1→1.03→1, 260ms ✔. **Grow button also keyboard accessible ✔ native button.** **Write the code.** I'll now produce the final file mentally-complete: Also add ``. Potential issue: Fraunces `font-weight:620` — variable font supports 300–700 ✔ with CSS font-weight 620 & font-family Fraunces (variable) ✔ if browser loads variable axis range from Google (yes with wght@300..700 request returns variable font; non-variable fallback rounds). ✔ Also `.serif` on h1 & caption. Space Mono 700 for dd. Final check on annotation 02 leader: from (552,158) to (470,244): passes through apple upper right — over red at low opacity ✔. Colors final: --paper:#F2EDE1; --ink:#221E19; --muted:#756A5C; --red:#B2331B; --hair:rgba(34,30,25,.16); Apple gradient stops: #E4593A → too orange? Nice apple red with warm light. ok maybe #DE5433. Let me write out. During writing, keep comments concise. Also the mini apple glyph in kicker — vertical align: svg inline style vertical-align:-1px. Footer separated spans with " · ". Now, is there anything in interactions not wired? Sound button toggles; grow button resets; apple bites; keyboard; far-click hint wiggle; caption pulse. All wired ✔. Time to write. I'll write the code block now, carefully and completely. Regarding JS helper `el(tag,attrs)`. Also careful: `state.biteList` init `[]`. Define qs helpers. Order of script: after DOM (script at end of body). Let me also double check the pop keyframes for hole inside mask: WAAPI animation on element inside `` — Chrome supports animation triggering re-render of masked content (mask is live). Should work; degrade gracefully. Edge: `#fleshG` has clip-path attr and transition opacity ✔. Now compose the final answer: short intro line, code block, then explanation of implementation + interaction guide. Keep explanation brief per my style. Also one more idea to strengthen signature: when a bite is taken, also show a tiny falling crumb particle? Two-three small flesh-colored dots falling with gravity from bite point (WAAPI translateY + fade, 500ms). Cheap & delightful. Add 3 crumbs: circles r2–3 fill #EFE2C2 appended to scene (local group), animated translate(dx, 60→120px) opacity→0, remove after. In scene coords (translate appleRoot local +40 — append crumbs to appleRoot local coords ✔ x=b.cx±rand, y=b.cy). WAAPI: animate transform translate keyframes with slight x drift & easing cubic-bezier(.3,.6,.6,1). crumbs above mask? append after appleWhole in appleSquash → on top ✔. Do it — adds physicality. 3 crumbs with random offsets. OK also verify crumb color visible over paper (they fall below apple over paper): #E9D9B4 with slight stroke? fine. Also note: don't overdo — 3 crumbs fine. Also caption "What’s left is the idea." — I like it. Write final code: ```html The Apple — Design Study Nº 001
``` **The concept.** I framed the apple as *Design Study Nº 001* — a botanical-plate-meets-spec-sheet poster on warm paper with crop marks and a hairline frame, set in Fraunces (display serif) and Space Mono (annotations, live data). The apple itself is pure SVG illustration: layered radial shading, a yellow-orange blush, vertical streaks, lenticel speckles, one crisp highlight, stem and an unfurling leaf — the gradients here are light on a physical object, while the page UI stays flat ink-on-paper. **The signature interaction.** Click (or tap, or press Enter on the focused apple) anywhere on the fruit and a bite is taken: - Bite placement uses binary search over `isPointInFill` to find the silhouette in your click direction, then verifies enough "fresh" area remains before committing — so bites always land on real edges and the apple naturally gets eaten down. - Each bite is an organic blob (jittered Catmull-Rom circle) punched through the apple with an SVG mask, with pale flesh, a wound rim, an inner-shadow crescent, and a few falling crumbs beneath. - A **crunch** is synthesized live with Web Audio — layered band-passed noise bursts plus a low thump, stereo-panned toward where you bit. Mutable via the top-right toggle. - The spec sheet is live telemetry: mass, diameter, sweetness and status update per bite, and hand-drawn tally marks accumulate. A fourth annotation, "04 — a decision, made", follows your latest bite. **The finale.** When too little remains, the apple fades and the core is revealed — fibers, seed pocket, two seeds — with the line *"What's left is the idea."* and a **Grow another** button that replants: the apple pops back in and the leaf unfurls again. No Apple was harmed; it regrows.
