Daybreak — a film drawn in code

The user wrote "Make a simpl videos with cod" — likely meaning "Make a simple video with code". So they want something like a video created with code. Since I deliver web artifacts, I could make an animated "video" — an animation that plays like a video in the browser. Maybe a generative motion-graphics piece rendered with Canvas, with play/pause, timeline scrubber, and a story told through animation. Let me interpret: user wants a simple video made with code. I'll build a self-contained HTML page that renders a short animated film (e.g., 20-30 seconds) on a canvas — scenes with transitions, a scrubber, play/pause, replay — essentially a "code-made video player". That directly answers "make a simple video with code" and gives them something interactive and memorable. Design direction: I want it to feel authored. Let me make a tiny animated short — like a minimal sunrise-to-night scene with a story: maybe "A Day" — sun rising, birds, clouds drifting, sun setting, moon and stars appearing. Motion graphics with easing, parallax hills, water reflection. That's charming and demonstrates "video from code". Alternatively, something more abstract: kinetic typography "video" — words animating. But a scenic animation feels more like a video. Let me design a 24-second short film, chapters: 1. 0–6s: Dawn — sky gradient shifting from deep night blue to warm peach... wait, I want to avoid decorative gradients as cheap ornament — but a sky in a landscape animation is a legitimate use (it's depicting an actual sky, not decoration). Gradients used to render a real scene (sky, water) are fine — they serve the content, not fake design. I'll keep UI itself flat and precise. 2. Scene structure with a timeline: sun rises, light rays, birds fly across, clouds drift, day (bright blue), sun sets with orange, stars fade in, moon rises, fireflies over hills, "fin" title. Signature moment: maybe a shooting star at night, or the sun's reflection stretching over water. Also interactive: drag the timeline to scrub the whole animation deterministically — everything is a pure function of time t, so scrubbing works perfectly. That's a nice engineering point: fully deterministic, scrubbable, like a real video. Add play/pause (space), restart, and a timecode display like a real player (00:00:00 style), chapter markers on the timeline. Implementation: canvas 16:9, requestAnimationFrame, t in [0, DURATION]. All elements positioned by t with easing functions. Deterministic pseudo-random via seeded hash for stars, birds, etc., so scrubbing is consistent. Player UI: minimal, dark cinema aesthetic. Monospace/characterful font — I'll use a Google Font like "Fraunces" for titles and "Space Grotesk" or "IBM Plex Mono" for the player chrome. Avoid Inter/Roboto. Let me use "Fraunces" (display serif) for the film title cards and "Space Grotesk" for UI. Film title: "SOL — a 24-second day" or something. Maybe title: "A Minute of Sun" — but 24s. Call it "Solstice" or "DAYBREAK — a film drawn in code". Nice: show film title card at start ("DAYBREAK", "drawn in real time by 400 lines of code"), end card "fin". Scenes (total 24s, 4 chapters × 6s): - Chapter 1 "Dawn" (0–6s): sky from indigo to warm rose/peach; sun rises from horizon; hills silhouettes lighten; mist. - Chapter 2 "Day" (6–12s): bright sky, drifting clouds, birds flying across in formation, sun high. - Chapter 3 "Dusk" (12–18s): sun descends, sky orange→magenta? Keep tasteful; birds return to roost; sun touches horizon, reflection on water widens. - Chapter 4 "Night" (18–24s): stars twinkle in, moon rises, fireflies over meadow, shooting star at ~21s, then fade to end card "fin" at 23s. Water at bottom? Let's do: hills layered + a lake strip at bottom reflecting sun/moon. Reflection adds craft. Color script per t: define keyframe color stops for sky top, sky bottom, sun color, hill colors, and lerp. Use smooth interpolation between keyframes. Timeline scrubber: thin bar with chapter tick marks and labels; hovering shows preview time; dragging scrubs. Playhead. Timecode "00:12 / 00:24". Also add keyboard: space toggles, ←/→ step 1s, digits jump chapters. Structure of code: - easings: easeInOut, etc. - lerp, clamp, smoothstep, range remap: `seg(t, a, b)` returns normalized progress clamped. - color keyframes array: [{t, top, bot, hill1..3, water, sun}], lerp in RGB or better mix in HSL? RGB fine with careful stops. - seeded rand: mulberry32. - Stars: precomputed positions; alpha = f(global starAlpha(t)) * twinkle(t, i). - Birds: parametric paths — a small "∼" wing flap: draw as two arcs with flap angle = sin(t*freq + phase). - Clouds: blobby ellipses drifting; x = (x0 + t*speed) wrap. - Sun/moon: position along arc: sun rises from below horizon to apex then sets; moon rises at night. - Water reflection: draw sky colors flipped + shimmering horizontal streaks under sun/moon (light column with sin offset). - Title cards: overlay text alpha at t in [0.3, 3.5] for opening title, end "fin" at 22.8–24. - Letterbox bars (cinematic 2.35:1 within 16:9?) Could add subtle letterbox for cinema feel. Maybe the canvas is 16:9 and I add letterbox bars inside — makes it feel like film. Yes: thin top/bottom bars, and title text inside frame. Film grain: subtle noise overlay for texture — cheap? A light grain via pre-rendered noise canvas at low alpha, redrawn offset each frame — adds filmic feel, purposeful. Keep alpha ~0.04. That's craft, not ornament. Vignette: subtle radial darkening — cinematic, purposeful. UI layout: page background near-black (#101014 or warm charcoal #131210). Centered player card? I'd rather avoid a "card" look: full-bleed dark stage with the film frame centered, player chrome beneath: chapter labels, scrubber, transport buttons (play/pause, restart, chapter nav). Header above: small caption "A 24-second film, drawn in code — no video file, every frame computed live." Icons: use small inline SVG icons (play/pause/restart/skip) — I'll hand-draw simple SVG paths; that satisfies icon needs without emoji. Auto-hide cursor/controls during playback? Maybe keep controls always visible for simplicity, but dim them. Aspect handling: canvas fixed internal resolution 1280×720, scaled with CSS to fit viewport width (max ~960px). Handle devicePixelRatio for crispness: set canvas size = clientWidth * dpr, use ctx.scale. Scrubbing: pointerdown on timeline → pause? Common behavior: scrub while dragging, resume state after. I'll remember wasPlaying. Let me write the animation carefully. Timeline constants: D = 24. Color script (skyTop, skyBottom, sun core, hills [far, mid, near], water). Times: 0 (night end→dawn start), 5 (dawn), 8 (morning), 12 (noon), 16 (afternoon gold), 18.5 (sunset), 20.5 (dusk), 24 (night). Let me pick palettes (tasteful, no neon): - t=0 night: skyTop #0b1026? Hmm avoid purple-blue clichés... night sky deep blue is natural. I'll use deep desaturated navy `#0e1420` top, bottom `#1c2433`. Hills: near-black blue-greens. Water dark. - t=5 dawn: top `#3a4a63`? Dawn: top slate blue `#4a5a74` → bottom warm peach `#f2b28c`? Let me craft: - 0s: top #0d1117-ish… I'll finalize in code. Sun path: x fixed-ish center-right (x = W*0.62)? Rise at x maybe moves: sun x from W*0.3 rising, arcs to W*0.62 at noon, sets at W*0.78. Parametrize: for sunPhase p = sun progress from rise to set over t∈[2,19]: angle from π (left horizon) to 0 (right horizon): x = cx + R*cos(a), y = horizonY - H*... simpler: elevation e(t): 0 at t=2 (at horizon), peaks at t=10.5, back to 0 at t=19. y = horizonY - e*maxElev. x drifts via easing from 0.35W to 0.72W. Below horizon before 2 and after 19 (hidden). Moon: rises t∈[19.5, 21.5] from horizon to upper area, stays. Stars alpha: fade in 18.5→21, out 0→3 (dawn) — actually at t=0 it's night so stars visible then fade by t=3.5. Shooting star: at t≈21.2, streak across upper-left for 0.7s with fading tail. Fireflies: t∈[19,24], small warm dots bobbing over near hill with sinusoidal drift and blink (alpha pulses). Warm amber #ffd27a, small glow via radial? Glow = decoration? A firefly glow is representational — fine, keep tiny. Birds: appear 7–11s flying left→right (5 birds, V offsets), and 13.5–17.5 flying right→left returning (roost). Wing flap sin. Clouds: 3–4 clouds drift slowly; visible mostly in day (alpha keyed by daylight). Mist at dawn: horizontal translucent bands over mid hills fading out by t=6. Water: bottom band from y=horizonWater to bottom (lake). Water color = darker mix of skyBottom. Reflections: sun glitter path when sun near horizon (t 2–4 and 17–20): vertical streak under sun x with shimmering segments. Moon glitter at night. Hills: 3 layers, drawn as smooth curves via noise-ish sin composition, silhouettes filled with layer color. Static shapes but colors lerp with time. Parallax? Static fine. Hill curve: for layer i, y(x) = base_i + amp_i * (sin(x*f1+s1)+0.5 sin(x*f2+s2)) — deterministic, smooth. Title cards: opening — "D A Y B R E A K" centered, small caps letterspaced, with subline "a twenty-four second film · drawn by code", fade in 0.4–1.2, hold, fade out by 4.2. End — "fin." italic serif at 22.6→24 (fade in), and maybe "made with 0 video files" tiny caption. Also chapter superimposed labels? Might be noise; chapter names in the timeline UI instead: Dawn / Noon / Dusk / Night. Chapter markers: 0, 6, 12, 18. Grain: create 128×128 noise canvas, draw as pattern with random offset each frame at alpha 0.05, composite 'overlay'? Keep simple: globalAlpha 0.05, drawImage tiled scaled up 2× for chunkier grain. Use pattern fill with translate offset. I'll do: pattern fill of whole frame with random integer translation, alpha 0.06. Cheap and effective. Vignette: radial gradient from transparent center to rgba(0,0,0,0.35) edges — cinematic; that's a rendering technique for the film look, acceptable. Letterbox: top/bottom black bars 7% each? Since scene composes with horizon, bars add cinema feel. I'll draw bars as part of frame (in-canvas) — but then scrub area shows them; fine. Actually cleaner: keep canvas 16:9 full, add letterbox bars height 44px each at 720p (≈6%). Title text sits above lower bar. Player chrome below canvas: Left: play/pause button (SVG), restart. Center/right: timecode `00:07.3 / 00:24.0` monospace. Below: timeline with chapter ticks + labels under (Dawn · Noon · Dusk · Night), thin progress line with playhead dot; buffered look not needed. Hover on timeline shows floating time tooltip. Draggable. Also a small "chapters" list? Keep it minimal: labels under ticks. Header: small overline "CANVAS CINEMA — 60 FPS, NO VIDEO FILE" and title "Daybreak, rendered live". Footer caption: "Every frame is a function of time — drag the timeline and time itself obeys." Nice line. Typography: Google Fonts: Fraunces (for film titles + page title, with optical size & soft serif) + Space Grotesk for UI + maybe IBM Plex Mono for timecode. Two fonts enough: Fraunces + Space Grotesk (Space Grotesk has tabular-ish digits? not mono; timecode better in mono: use "Space Grotesk" anyway or add "JetBrains Mono"? I'll add IBM Plex Mono for timecode — three fonts is okay but maybe two: Fraunces + Space Grotesk, and use font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums for timecode. Space Grotesk supports tnum? Unsure; fallback fine. I'll include IBM Plex Mono just for the timecode and caption code vibes. Actually keep it to two: Fraunces + "Space Grotesk"; timecode with Space Grotesk + tabular-nums; acceptable. Hmm, risk of jitter without true mono. Space Grotesk digits are near-uniform. I'll test mentally — fine, add `font-feature-settings:"tnum"` and fixed width via ch. Safer: use IBM Plex Mono. Three fonts total is acceptable but let me limit to two for restraint: Fraunces + Space Grotesk. Digits in Space Grotesk are geometric and consistent width mostly. Add letter-spacing on timecode. Page palette: charcoal `#111013` background (slightly warm), text `#e8e4da` (warm off-white), accent: single amber `#e0a458`? The film has its own colors; UI accent = warm amber echoing sun. Good: one accent color, used for playhead + active chapter + small marks. Ensure contrast: text on dark bg use #e9e5dc — high contrast, fine. Avoid large low-contrast gray blocks: keep text bright enough. Interactions summary: - Play/Pause (button + space) - Scrub timeline (pointer drag), hover tooltip - Chapter click jumps - ← → ±1s, 1–4 chapter jump, R restart - Click on video toggles play - "Live redraw" — even when paused, grain twinkles? No — deterministic video: paused frame static except grain? Keep paused truly static (it's a video metaphor). But subtle: show a "PAUSED" indicator? The play button suffices. Autoplay: start paused at t=0 with a big "press play" state? Better first impression: auto-play on load (muted visuals, no audio — no autoplay restrictions). Yes, autoplay immediately; the opening title plays. Add a subtle "click to pause" hint? Keep minimal. Loop: at end, loop back? Films end at "fin". I'll pause at end and show replay state (play button becomes replay). Or loop — looping is nice for ambient. I'll loop by default? A film that says "fin" then loops is odd. Choose: on end → pause; play button turns to restart icon; pressing play restarts from 0. Also small loop toggle? Skip; keep simple. Timecode format: "00:12.4" of "00:24.0"? Use SS.t style: `0:12.4 / 0:24.0`. Or frames like film: `00:00:12:14` (MM:SS:FF at 24fps) — filmic! Timecode at 24fps: fun detail. Display `TC 00:00:12:14`. I'll do MM:SS:FF. Frame stepping? Not necessary. Now the rendering code. Let me write it carefully. Canvas: W=1280, H=720 internal; letterbox bars: barH = 46. horizonY = 470 (waterline), hills above, water 470→H-bar. Actually let me define: waterTop = 470. Hills: far hills base around y 430 with peaks to ~330; mid base 455 peaks 380; near base 480? Near hill should be in front of water? No — waterline at 470, hills sit behind water: far hill horizon at ~470 line? Let me structure: sky above y=470; hills occupy band 340–470 (their silhouettes' bottoms at 470, i.e., at the waterline — like hills across a lake); water 470–720. Near bank: maybe a dark foreground bank on bottom-left in front of water for depth (silhouette strip from left, y~640 rising). Nice for fireflies to hover over. Fireflies over the near bank at night. Sun/moon reflect on water (glitter path). Hill layer function: y(x) = base - amp*(noise). Use: h(x) = base + a1*sin(x*k1+φ1) + a2*sin(x*k2+φ2) + a3*sin(x*k3+φ3). Ensure bottom filled to waterline. Far hills taller (peaks up to y≈300), mid ~360, near-low ridge ~430 across. Colors per keyframe — define palette array: keys: t: [skyTop, skyBot, hillFar, hillMid, hillNear, water, sunCore] Let me choose: - t0 night: skyTop #070b14, skyBot #16202e; hills #0a0e16/#0d1320/#111827→ hmm hills should be darker than sky at night (silhouettes). far #0c1220, mid #0a0e18, near #070a12; water #0b1220; sun n/a. - t=4 dawn: skyTop #33415c? Let me go warmer: skyTop #45526b, skyBot #e8a87c? Too pink maybe; dawn peach #f0b285 bottom, top muted slate #4b5871. hills: far #55465a? Hmm hills tinted by dawn: far #6b5566? That's purple-ish. Avoid purple gradient cliché but dawn hues naturally rosy. I'll bias to warm amber/rose over slate: far hill dawn #5c4a55 → maybe #544a52. Keep hills as dark warm silhouettes: far #4a3b45, mid #382e38, near #241d26? These read mauve. Alternatively keep hills neutral-dark warm browns: far #4d3b3a, mid #33282a, near #1f191c. OK. - t=8 morning: skyTop #7fb2d9? and bottom pale #dff0f2? Day sky: top #6aa5cf, bottom #cfe8ee. hills daylight: far #7e94a8? Hills in daylight = hazy blue-green: far #8aa3b5 (atmospheric), mid #4f7a6d (green), near #2e5a48? Let me go: far #90a8ba, mid #58806b, near #2f4f41; water #3f7d96? Water reflecting sky: #6ea3b8. - t=12 noon: top #4f97cf, bottom #cfe9f2; same hills slightly brighter; water #4f93ad. - t=16 late afternoon golden: top #6f9ec4, bottom #f4d9a8; hills warm: far #a08a7a? mid #6d7a5a, near #3a4a38; water #7f9d9e. - t=18.7 sunset: top #35406b? sunset sky: top deep slate #3f4a6b, bottom #f2a35e hot amber; hills dark warm: far #55404a? Let me simplify hills at sunset: far #4e3a44, mid #33262f, near #1e1620; water #35455e with amber glitter. - t=21 dusk: top #131c30, bottom #33405c? bottom afterglow #4a3a52? avoid purple… use #54384a (wine) → fading. water dark #101826. - t=24 night: same as t0. These will be tuned; exact hex values I'll finalize while writing, aiming for harmony. Interpolate in RGB with smoothstep between keys. Sun color: dawn #ffcf9e core → noon #fff6d8 → sunset #ff9a4a. Sun draw: circle with soft edge (radial gradient — representational, fine) plus slight bloom. Sky draw: vertical gradient skyTop→skyBot from top to waterline. Real sky — legit. Extra sky detail: a few stars at night (points), clouds (soft ellipse clusters, color keyed: dawn clouds warm-lit underside #e8b48f alpha, day white #ffffff alpha .85, sunset #f0a06a). Cloud shape: cluster of 4–6 overlapping circles flattened; drift x slowly; alpha by daylight factor & fixed base alpha. Birds: color dark silhouette #1c1a1a (day) — at dusk nearly black. Bird draw: two quadratic curves from center, wing angle flap = sin(time*10 + phase)*0.9; size ~6–10px. Path: leader along ease, followers offset in V. Mist: at dawn t 2–6: 3 translucent horizontal ellipses/bands with alpha fading; color #dfe6ea alpha .12. Water rendering: fill rect waterTop→bottom with water color; then reflection of sky: gradient flipped? Simple: fill with vertical gradient from mix(skyBot, water, .3) at top to darker at bottom. Then glitter: for sun near/above horizon with low elevation, draw shimmering streak: segments across x±spread at y rows, alpha decreasing with distance from waterline; x offset per row = sin(t*3 + row)*k; color = sun color lightened, alpha ~ .5 * glitterFactor. glitterFactor peaks when sun elevation low (dawn/sunset) — classic. Moon glitter thinner, cool white, smaller. Also waterline highlight: 1px light line at waterTop with skyBot lighten. Shooting star: t0=21.1, dur=0.8: pos along line from (W*0.78, 120) to (W*0.45, 220)? Direction down-left. Head bright, tail gradient stroke; alpha = sin(pi*p). Only in night scene. Fireflies: 12 flies: base positions over near bank region (x 80–520, y 560–660), pos = base + sin drift; blink alpha = max(0, sin(t*speed+phase))^3; active window t∈[19.5,24] fade in. Color #ffd27a; small 2px core + 6px soft halo (radial gradient alpha .35). Moon: position: rises after sunset: elevation from t 19.6→22 rises from waterline to y≈150, x≈W*0.68? But sun set at x .72W; moonrise near same area fine, or left side x .3W for balance — moon on left, since sun set right. Moon x = W*0.30. Draw: circle #eef0e2 with crater dots subtle + crescent? Full moon with slight shading (offset darker circle overlay at low alpha) — keep simple: pale disc + tiny craters (3 dots alpha .08). Halo soft. Opening title overlay: big "DAYBREAK" letterspaced Fraunces 600, color #f2ede2, alpha envelope in [0.5..1.1 in, hold to 3.4, out by 4.4]; small rule line + subline "a film in four chapters · drawn by code, not camera". Fade sub separately. Also small "I · DAWN" chapter cards? At each chapter start, show a corner caption for 2s: "I — Dawn", bottom-left above letterbox, alpha envelope. Nice filmic touch. Chapters: 0 Dawn, 6 Noon, 12 Dusk, 18 Night. Wait chapters should align with scenes: my scenes: dawn 0–6, day/noon 6–12, dusk 12–18, night 18–24. Good. End card: "fin" Fraunces italic at center, t 22.8–24 in (alpha in from 22.8→23.6). Scene darkens slightly behind it (alpha overlay to near-black .35). Then loop/pause. Also opening: scene starts pre-dawn dark; title over it. Grain & vignette & letterbox drawn last; chapter caption & titles above grain? Titles under grain for filmic unify — draw order: scene → overlays(titles) → vignette → grain → letterbox bars → (timecode burn-in? no). Chapter captions drawn just above lower letterbox bar area? Place inside frame bottom-left, y = H-bar-28. Player HTML: ```
