Prompt

create a data set for train a model of me so create a data set .the project is # GPT Development Project: Context Handover (Update 2) ## 1. Main Goal I am building a small character-level GPT from scratch in Python and PyTorch. It should learn my texting style from my Instagram chats and generate replies like mine. My chats are in romanized Telugu. Teach me practically, one step at a time. Do not restart completed work. ## 2. Environment - OS: Windows, VS Code, PowerShell, CPU only (no GPU). No paid services; everything runs locally and free. - Project directory: `C:\Users\shyam\project` - Virtual environment: `.venv` - I cannot send screenshots. All inspection and debugging must work through terminal text. - Run files with: `python filename.py` ## 3. Current Project Structure ```text project/ ├── .venv/ ├── .vscode/ ├── checkpoints/ (best.pt saved here; best_3000.pt backup may exist) ├── data/ │ └── training_data.txt ├── instagram chart/ │ └── blessed_girl/messages/message_1.json ├── inspect_data.py (renamed from inspect.py, see Lessons) ├── preprocess.py ├── train.py ├── train_old.py (backup of the original 120-character version) ├── generate.py └── raw/precessed/ (old empty placeholder files, ignore) ``` ## 4. Instagram Export Findings (inspected, not assumed) - Top-level JSON keys: participants, messages, title, is_still_participant, thread_path, magic_words - Message keys: sender_name, timestamp_ms, content (missing for photos, reels, reactions), is_geoblocked_for_viewer, is_unsent_image_by_messenger_kid_parent - Instagram stores messages newest first, so we sort by timestamp_ms. - Emoji and accents are stored as latin-1-escaped UTF-8, so we repair them with `s.encode("latin-1").decode("utf-8")`. - Each file is capped at 10,000 messages, so conversations can span message_1.json, message_2.json, and so on. - My account name in the export: `shyam sai` - The export currently contains ONE conversation only (with "Blessed girl 💖"): 10,000 messages (5,052 mine, 4,948 hers), dated 2026-10-08 to 2026-11-04. It is probably truncated and has not covered six months. - The other 3 friends are NOT yet in the data. I still need to request a new Instagram export: Messages, JSON, last 6 months (or select specific chats). The folder layout should be `instagram chart/<friend_folder>/messages/message_*.json`. - I should confirm the friend is fine with her messages being used for training. ## 5. preprocess.py (DONE and verified) - Finds all `message_*.json` per conversation folder, merges them, sorts oldest to newest, and fixes the encoding. - Skips messages without `content`. - Cleans links to `<link>`, emails to `<email>`, and phone numbers to `<phone>`. - Merges consecutive messages from the same speaker into one turn. - Assigns tags F1, F2, F3... (one per conversation folder, sorted), and `Y` for me. - Removes characters that appear fewer than 3 times (rare emojis). - Writes `data/training_data.txt` in this format, with `###` marking the end of each conversation: ```text F1: friend message Y: my reply second line of reply ### ``` - Result: 6,073 turns, 173,463 characters, vocabulary size 108. - It already supports multiple friends. New folders should work with no code changes after re-running. - Reply lengths: median 15 characters, 90th percentile 47, max 172. ## 6. train.py (DONE and verified) Architecture is unchanged from the original: character tokenizer, token and positional embeddings, multi-head causal attention, feed-forward, residual connections, LayerNorm (post-norm), 2 transformer blocks, AdamW. Added dropout and checkpoint saving. Configuration: ```python batch_size = 32 block_size = 128 embedding_dim = 128 num_heads = 4 num_layers = 2 dropout = 0.2 learning_rate = 0.001 max_iters = 3000 eval_interval = 250 eval_iters = 20 ``` - Loads `data/training_data.txt`, with an 80/20 train/validation split (138,770 / 34,693 characters). - Saves `checkpoints/best.pt` whenever validation loss improves. The checkpoint holds model_state, stoi, itos, config, val_loss and step. Results of the 3000-iteration run: - Final training loss: 0.867 - Final validation loss: 1.051 - Best validation loss: 1.041 - Train/validation gap is small, so overfitting is fixed compared with the original (train 0.13 / validation 7.08 on 120 characters). - I have NOT yet seen the per-step loss curve (`Step ...` lines), so I don't know whether validation was still falling at step 3000. ## 7. generate.py (DONE and working) - Rebuilds the same model, loads `checkpoints/best.pt`, and runs an interactive loop. - The prompt is `F1: <my typed message>\n\nY:`. It samples characters with temperature (default 0.8) until the reply ends with a blank line (`\n\n`). - The current version is the single-temperature one. I was about to change the loop to print replies at temperatures 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 for each prompt. Sample output at temperature 0.8: ```text F1: hii Y: ledhu / nek okay unnav / nenu a niku pandhi rah F1: ella unnav Y: kalli / em anukoku rah ``` Interpretation: the model learned my spelling, my short multi-line style and when to stop. It did not learn meaning (replies don't truly answer the question). This is expected for about 400K parameters and 173K characters. ## 8. Lessons / Bugs Already Fixed - A file named `inspect.py` in the project folder shadowed Python's built-in `inspect` module and crashed PyTorch. It was renamed to `inspect_data.py`. Never name files after Python modules (inspect, random, json, test, and so on). - When pasting code, make sure it goes into the editor and not into the terminal (a `>>` prefix in the terminal means it went to the wrong place). ## 9. Next Steps (in order) 1. Replace the `generate.py` loop with the multi-temperature version (0.5, 0.8, 1.0), test 3 or 4 prompts, and compare. 2. Run `python train.py | Tee-Object -FilePath train_log.txt` (back up best.pt first), then `Select-String -Path .\train_log.txt -Pattern "^Step"` to see the loss curve. If validation is still falling at step 3000, raise `max_iters`. 3. Request a new Instagram export with the other 3 friends (6 months, JSON), drop the folders into `instagram chart/`, and re-run preprocess.py. Check that tags F1 to F4 and the counts look right. 4. Retrain on the combined data. The goal is for the model to learn that my style differs per friend (for example, `F1` gets one style of reply and `F2` another). Update generate.py so I can choose which friend tag to prompt with (F1 to F4). 5. Possible later improvements: more context lines in the prompt (previous turns), a larger model if data grows, and training only on `Y:` turns (loss masking) so the model focuses on MY style. ## 10. Teaching Rules (keep following) 1. One step at a time, practical Python code, no theory dumps. 2. Preserve existing working components. 3. Give complete updated files when practical, with exact PowerShell commands. 4. Show expected terminal output, then wait for me to run it and paste results. 5. Debug errors before moving forward and never assume code works. 6. Don't give the whole project in one huge response, and don't repeat completed lessons. 7. Flow: Understand → Complete Code → Run → Observe → Debug → Verify → Next Step. 8. Privacy: anonymize names, strip phone numbers, emails and links, and don't ask me to paste private message text. Structure and statistics are enough. ## 11. First Action in the New Chat Continue from Step 1 in section 9: give me the multi-temperature `generate.py` loop, then the `train_log.txt` check. Do not restart the project. so genrate a data set for train
